Hey guys - (just to start so no flaming occurs) i will be playing gw2 so I am not a hater. I just have a more general question.
Why is it that people do not like true open world pvp, where you can gank anyone while they are questing etc. I enjoyed it in wow while it existed (vanilla-slightly BC), Rift was good, and currently gaming in Tera.
Is it the annoyance of being ganked and not being able to defend yourself. Does it provide to much of a challenge. Or is our generation just lazy and prefer to sit in a town and just que for stuff.
I personally like the OWPVP and being able to mess with someones day while there gathering, questing whatever there doing .
what are peoples thoughts on this?

Open World PvP is fine, just not in themeparks.
There needs to be a real risk involved, not just having to go back to your corpse.
Otherwise it just turns into real PvP 10% of the time and griefing 90% of the time.

The answer, in my opinion, is already in your original post. The word gank. May be fun for the jerk nozzles doing the ganking, not always so hawt for the people getting ganked. If you're allowing a big part of your playerbase to be griefed like that openly then that playerbase goes somewhere else.
Why do people not like it? I know I don't like it because it's not in my plan. If I want to go out and do this quest, check out that area, etc etc. That's what I want to do. I don't want to have to fight every larry curly and moe along the way who thinks they're awesome or trying to take the stress out of their sad lives by being big bullies in a video game.
I'm sure there are games that support open world pvp as a big deal, at least there should be, it's definitely got a big enough following, but it has no place in a game like GW2 really. Just my two cents tho.
People dont, Its great when the developers want it in their game, and the game is designed around it, with an item system and death penalty that support it, i.e prevents rapid respawning and running back to get mowed down, then run back in.
what people dont like it having it shoehorned into every game that comes out when it doesnt belong, like having a multiplayer mode in every console game, Dead space 2? come on, it didnt belong there. It forces the age old battle of balancing pvp over pve and pve over pvp. How much resources to the developers allocate to make sure the game can still be enjoyed as inteneded on a pvp server type? How much of those resources are taken away from time to improve the core focus of the game?
Will there be good guys if theres no bad guys?
good vs bad scenario, its everywhere, movies ,games ,life, space, whatever, but its allways there, even in church.
now because people cant do these "bad things" gank, kill quest givers ,steal whatever can be stealed etc.
will good guys be there? whats there for them.
How can King Arthur do his good things and share some justice with his Excalibur because theres noone doing bad things.
Let's internet
wow, you could have had an actual discussion but instead went for the cheap route just giving insutling alternatives.
One is either lazy or not capable of challenge.
My guess is that there are people who don't get the same zing, the same thril from doing something and then being attacked out of the blue.
They might be more interested in these games as social pastimes or just hate the attitudes of some people after they do a good gank.
Personally, I hate the gankers who take you out and then cry to you for hours after you return the favor. That's my own personal experience.
In any case, stay classy.

OWPvP isnt necessarily a bad idea, but the problem is that it often degenerates into griefing. People who enjoy real competition want to engage people of similar status (gear, level, whatever value constitute the strength of your ingame persona). The difference between the two combatant forces being skill and strategy.
The method that most games use to implement OWPvP creates some scenarios where this happens, but the rest of the time you just get jerks killing people weaker than them for some sort of hollow emotional gratification.
This.
When I want to PVP, I PVP. When I don't want to PVP, I don't PVP.
Yeah I just feel that the word gank goes both ways - i mean if you get ganked I do not neccesarily get mad - it just makes me want to fight back. Really a differenc of opinions and how you go about. Do i take my 60 lancer and go kill lvl 10 noobs in Lumbertown, no, cuz thats ****** boring. The people that enjoy that kind of suck usually only do it because they cannot comprehend the game at higher levels and usually **** at pvp. Now in a game like Tera, i enjoy seeing another 60 and people able to attack him no matter what hes doing. We are both lvl 60 in a 60 zone and that is fun to me, see how many people I can take on.
i agree that it does not work in some games. For instance, i liked it in rift, but with spawn points so close, it was always die, instantly back into fight, unless u knew where to lead people to increase that time. I also think, that games need to bring back the gear loss, or atleast high durability loss or something. For instance, briefly ROM was dope in its white/red statuses. They destryed there game when they mae white players unable to lose gear.
There are two types of pvpiers. Those that like balance and those that don't. Neither is wrong its just a matter of preference.
Those that like balance like the level playing field. I am more of a balance guy. I can see were a game based around open world pvp can be enjoyable though, like DayZ. But I utterly hate how most mmos do it. PvE and open world pvp just do not mix for me. And we all know why, ganking.
I have nothing against open world PvP in and of itself..
But GW2 would not bode well with an open pvp system in place...
However i would love it if anet made an open world pvp litterbox server of the most nasty variety that pvpers could reside in and others could guest to, it would be a lot of fun..;)
Playing GW2..
well for one thing i hated having to go to the area for accomplishments or for resources which always inevitably happened. In WoW i had to go there for elemental essences because nowhere else were their a large enough source, so inevitably, some idiot would see me either gathering or fishing and think (oh i have a free pass to gank woohoo). That's why. it was always inbetween battles too. It's like trying to fill up my car with gas and having someone pull out a gun and shoot at me.
I think what i love most really out of this subject is a game like Tera (dont get me wrong this game has shit tons of flaws)
I enjoy the no factions - openess of it - in the world i can turn on "outlaw declaration" and attack anyone - that type of openeess is what i love.
If I was a game developer, I would do everything in my power to make sure that people that have fun at the expense of others don't drive off my customer base.
In my eyes, you answered your own question.
I have nothing against open world PvP, my issue is the weakshit "tactics" that the "hardcore" use to prey on the weak. Also, because a game includes it does not mean you need to kill every single person with chickenshit "tactics".
It brings out the type of gameplay that I dispise. And then to hear 6 or 7 "wolves" that just ganked that lone player who was no threat brag about their "skill", give me a break. It is playground shit. The day these "hardcore wolves" actually ball up for a straight fight let me know, I will be there with my bloody knuckles on.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I think the more important question is why do people insist on playing OWPVP games knowing what they're getting into then complain about the ruleset?
Wouldn't it be silly if I played WoW and complained I have to fight computer controlled monsters.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.

Why do people hate open world PvP?
They don't when it's implemented properly, in a setting and fashion that makes sense. They do when it's badly implemented in a way that leads to rampant griefing.
EVE has open PvP. It also has checks and balances to prevent rampant griefing and you're made aware that you're heading for trouble the further out of Empire space you travel.
MO has open PvP. It has a small population of "hardcore" players because it suffers from griefing.
The question isn't why people hate open PvP, but why people hate being ganked by some dickhead and his mates who just want to ruin your day because they can. And it does happen.
My thoughts are: that if someone enjoys 'being able to mess with someones day while there gathering, questing whatever there doing ." it usually means that person had a rough childhood where they were never in control and they need to feel superior in the safety of a virtual world where they feel they have control. Usually they have been picked on most of their lives and cower in real confrontation. Especially those who constantly 'mess with' those of lower level.
But again that's just my thoughts on 'someone'....
Hey man I totally agree with you - i think though that in a game that has OWPVP it provides a level awareness that some people do not want to be a part of. Now with your "weak shit" tactics I can see that as being annoying. However that is not what i like to do personally. If im solo i fight other people solo. If im in a party I dont go gank someone who is mining by themselves, what is the point, its instant kill no matter how bad my party is. I do enjoy the oW part though, i mean 5v1 the people that love that, or the people that group there guild together then go kill single targets they are puss***** and deserve to be killed/shot/killed until they cry and quit the game lol.
I guess the big thing here, is what otheres sya, its the problems it brings, currently for parties that do 5v1 OW there is no downside to it, there are no penalty systems in place i guess for people that are too horrible to fight 1v1 and so on
I think this only applies to those of age 30+ that still live in their parents or grandmas basement. Just because you go fight someone thats gathering, unless ur max lvl and there lvl 5 there is nothing wrong with that specially in a OWPVP environment. Its the people that do this jumping on people then cry when they get killed that have had rough lives.
Its stupid, masochist and promotes selfish and idiotic gameplay and promotes ganking. I could go on and on all day but open world PvP is the biggest detractor and is the most idiotic form of PvP imaginable.
