Full servers cut you off from friends joining up with you.
Grouping whilst in the tutorial stage has you stuck at the boss encounter.
Can't play with those in your group whilst in the overflow servers.
Every time you go through a zone portal, it separates you and gives you a network error when trying to join up with your group.

Should rename your thread "Guild Wars 2 LAUNCH DAY: Solo player's dream, grouping nightmare"
Unless of course you honestly expectt it to be like this forever...
When you can't play with friends AT ALL. That becomes a serious problem.
They pretty much logged off out of frustration because they find it boring playing by themselves.

Thread subject is misleading. The issue is full servers, not grouping. And yes it's a problem. Actually grouping is a great experience when you are on a real server. The popping back and forth from overflow to main server all the time whenever you cross a portal needs to be fixed.
If you have alot of pre-orders you should prepare for that. If you 1.5 million are going to play your game, most likely at head start and launch as all other mmorpgs, you try to take measures to make it easier.
You know, the server status that prevents your friends from playing with you is temporary, right? For example, I created a character on Jade Quarry server which got full really fast. I transfered to Crystal Desert to avoid the lag for a bit. When I tried to transfer back to Jade Quarry, I couldn't because it was full. About an hour or so later I tried transfering back to Jade Quarry and it went through without a problem.
From what I gathered, server transfers, at least for now, are dependent on the amount of players logged in to the server.
Ok, not being able to group up until you complete the tutorial is a problm that lasts 5 minutes. If YOU had an issue, don't assume everyone did, I've been grouped since the servers came up and we had zero issues.
If you're grouped and getting sent to different overflows it's a bug (one they *had* fixed after BWE1 - we haven't had any issues with it yet at all though). You sure you were grouped before zoning?
Getting a network error is also not part of the game design forcing you apart, it's obviously a side effect of launch day and likely won't persist very long.
No other game has ever taken as many steps as GW2 has to keep me playing with my friends (no quest step barriers, different server barriers, scaling for personal story to allow friends to do it together, level scaling in which both players still recieve xp and loot that is appropriate for their actual unscaled level).
It's more a case (ALL a case?) of bad side effects of a very busy launch, none of these are intentional design decisions, none of these should persist for more than a day or two.
No need for sensationalism.
The funny part is that the most people who have commented here about how bad this is, have actually posted fanboi-threads in TSW forums, explaining how they will never touch a crap like GW2.
Otherwise, Guild Wars 2 is a multi-million player game, this is not TSW.
Source?
TSW - AoC - Aion - WOW - EVE - Fallen Earth - Co - Rift - || XNA C# Java Development
OVer 2 million sold, source is NCsoft
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Really?
I'm googling in it right now and no results. Not saying it isn't true, but a link to a source would nice if you give numbers. To atleast back it up.
People like making number up on this site. GW2 has no doubt sold a lot, but I've also seen nothing.
As for the TSW launch and in fact other recent MMO launches, have been extremely smooth. This launch is just bad, at least connection wise. The game itself is running very smooth once in, other than HoM is broke for the EU.
For the hell of it a couple of us tried disbanding the group and going into the overflow server seperate and then reforming the group after . It worked and we were all in the same overflow, don't ask me why...
You got lucky. Tried from logging out to rezoning. Popular servers you have a slim chance of being able to group.
As some one "cleverly" tried to mention about trying to rezone whilst in the group. One person would step through the zone portal and the rest would be stuck there with a network error.
I even found an option to 'join in' when you right click on your group member's icon. Again. Network error.
It has made the game unplayable for many.

Let's also add to the list where your party member's dots on the map disappear AS SOON AS THEY'RE NOT IN VISUAL RANGE!
Then there is also when you try and join personal quests together. Some times it lets you both in, some times it does in the same instance. Then you have to go through the entire overflow crap again to try and be able to attempt to enter the same instance again!
It is almost near impossible to play as a group you didn't just happen to run into on the overflow you're on. If you try, your enjoyment experience of the game goes down considerably.

list of current issues.. the party overflow thing is a bug they are working on it says
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Yeah I've been getting teh visual range party problem as well. I am not sure how many people are having teh same problem. Apparently it's not happening with all people.
Yeah, the 'join in' button for joining friends in overflow is a bit broken.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
All the more reason to wait until the mad rush is over. I seriously considered getting the preorder several times. Even today I found my finger hovering over the buy button. But things are bound to be wonky the first week, maybe through the first month.
I'll wait.
I guess the OP must be unlucky, my only complaint about the Grouping system is that there is no option for parties of >5. Network errors are to be expected around launch, but I've rarely had issue with the "Join In" function; a relog to character select seems to fix it up quite nicely.
We just stopped bothering with grouping up for now. When we play we still hang out in vent, but for now any grouping is on hold because its a bit frustrating. So we have been pretty much just trying different classes out and the such. Hopefully in a week or so they get the overflow/grouping issues worked out.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Just tried the 'join in' function. Surprised it works now. Not sure if it works for every one now or for how long. But that's one thing I'm glad that is fixed!
