Yes 'only' about 25% of MMO players are teenagers, this shows how blinded people can be. So the age group 13 to 19 which covers just six years has 25% of players. The age group 20 to 77 (average life expectancy) covering 37 years has 75% of players.
6 years is about 1/13th of 77 years. So if we had an even distribution of age, any six year period would contain about 8% of the total population, not 25%! I am slanting the figures you say? Ok lets be more generous then, lets say 9 yrs to 19 yrs for teenagers. That is still 12% not 25%! No one gaming at 77 you say? I will give you that, but as a balance how many ten year olds who should not be playing do you think fill out survey questionnaires?

I understand what you're saying and to a certain degree, can agree with you.
There's tons of much more mature games out there, just need to look at the right place.
I feel like I'm walking on eggs that are about to crack writing this, trying to not give the wrong impression and trying to be as PC as possible. I know someone is going to end up accusing me of something because it's a sensitive topic I think. But I wanted to make it anyway.
Here we go.
I feel sometimes that there are too many children in MMO, or rather too few MMO oriented towards adults. I love children, even though I have none of my own, but I would go bonkers if I had to deal with children all day long, I don't know how some people do it.
Now that MMO became mainstream and F2P, the average age in MMO seems to have steadily gone down over time. Trying to have a good conversation in the game or on forums of a particular game, is sometimes unnecessary complex because there is a communication barrier.
It becomes even more of an issue when you live in Europe like me. We rely on English to overcome the language barrier but the English of younger MMO players is sometimes so bad that I can hardly make out what they're trying to say.
Does anyone experience the same issues as I have, that the average age of the MMO player is so low that it takes away some of the enjoyment of socialising in the game?
Thanks.
Agree somewhat, but believe its not age that is the culprit but maturity. Modern culture allows one to be immature at any age without much reprocusion. Also seems typical with the commericalization of MMOs.
Its actually funny that you mention this as I went to MMOs in 2011 from consoles for the exact same reason. I know consoles were created (marketed) for kids when I was growing up in the 80s but I just feel we were more mature (or had more fun?) with it? Trying to play XBOX360 on Live became a nightmare. Or perhaps it had to deal with the fact that we played together we sat together on the same couch. There is something to say about anonymity that (almost) allows you to be someone else (or someone your not regular). Almost like a 'mob' mentality.
I've experienced everywhere I play but have learned to ignore it and seek out like minded people and stick with them.
Consumers spent $24.75 billion on video games, hardware and accessories in 2011.
Purchases of digital content accounted for 31 percent of game sales in 2011, generating $7.3 billion in revenue.
The average U.S. household owns at least one dedicated game console, PC or smartphone.
The average game player is 30 years old and has been playing games for 12 years.
The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35 years old.
Forty-seven percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).
Sixty-two percent of gamers play games with others, either in-person or online.
Thirty-three percent of gamers play games on their smartphones, and 25 percent play games on their handheld device.
Seventy-three percent of all games sold in 2011 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+. For more information on game ratings, please see www.esrb.org.
Parents are present when games are purchased or rented 90 percent of the time.

Is this a rite of passage or something? You hit your 30s, and suddenly you change into a curmudgeon at some point?
Your grandparents invented the phrase "generation gap" for what you're experiencing.
Surly old internet farts use a different phrase.
This fossil rant must be particularly fun for 30-somethings; you can pick either team, if the thread starts to go against you.
Dude, do the same thread, from the opposite viewpoint--tomorrow. See if anyone notices.
I think you see things differently as you get older and of course there are some decent young people. But in the past ten years things have been getting worse generally speaking. Its not the younger generations fault . For example in the schools in the UK children don't fail at anything anymore . No one gets an F anymore . Punishments and disipline are so light the kids know theres no real sanctions against them anymore . We've spawned such a self indugant generation who are full of their rights over their responsibitys . Theres even no respect for the law any more because they know there very little that can be done to punish them before they are 18 . Its societys fault because fundamentally this generation is the same as every generation thats gone before them but the way they have been brought up and the culture they have been subjected to has made them what they are . I think it will change because these things always do when things go to far ( as they did with the riots in the uk ) . We are asking searching questions now . Some of us want to leave the European Union so we can adequatly punish teens of 13-18 under the law and in schools . We are looking into the " no one fails " culture in schools and national service of some kind is very popular among the british public as a way of making young people aware of the responsibilitys .
UK leave the EU, what a joke, we have a Muppet in charge of our Government who has no balls and has never run a business so has none or little qualification to run a county and has had more U turns than we have road users. He blames everyone else but his own party and I for one have no idea how the fooking hell he's still got a job. Half the kids on the planet could do a better job than this dicks doing IMO. England is the laughing stock of the world atm, our country is falling into decline and we are letting every man and his dog into our country and there is nothing we can do about it.
So I feel that half the kids or young people are doing much better communicating in our MMO's than the man is at number 10. So with that I give a big thumbs up to the kids playing in MMO's keeps them out of trouble and if they are hard to understand at least we know they are safe and out of harms way imo. I'm a single dad of 55 year young and have brought my son up the right way for the last 14yrs to be honest and respect others at all times, shame other two parent families don't have the time or do the same, but that's another issue.
Simple way to tell if your mmo community is shit is ask a question. If the first 5-10 responses are troll responses and lol's and you get a pm from a mature player with a real answer and suggestions...then you know its bad...that guy is hiding and the kids are in control.
(...)
If the community passes your first test, then a good second test would be to present an unpopular game-related opinion in the chat and then see how the community responds. If they are tolerant and respect your opinion, then the community may actually be great.

I dont seem to meet many in EvE though. Wonder why...
Incidentally the average age of an Eve player rose by one year from last year. I wonder why...
Still, Eve has its share of immature players - stupid ones too. I'd go as far as to say there's hardly any difference when compared to other games.
You'd be right, I never detected a lot of difference, and it wasn't the younger (under 18) crowd who was being immature and obnoxious. (psst, its those 20-35 year olds, they are broken inside)

When is comes to such statistics what we really need is a survey of what is happening over time. I think that would show a higher proportion of teenagers in the more recently released MMO’s, the 40+ demographic I certainly see as being more prevalent in older MMO’s.
From the stats I produced teenagers are a disproportionably high percentage of the age range of MMO’s and the median age for MMO players lies between the mid twenties to early thirties. MMO’s are now designed with them in mind, that should hardly come as a surprise. Do you think MMO’s are being made for guys in their 30’s? I really don’t think so.

Each MMORPG has a different target audience. Granted, those targets are pretty huge, otherwise it wouldn't be a "massive" rpg. Still... Take Fallen Earth, it has a rather mature target audience. World of Warcraft basically targets everyone. Other games aim at a younger audience. You can basically choose the average age of your fellow gamers freely.
I'm getting on a bit now, but I've have some great times in MMOs with people of all ages. In fact, sometimes when grouping up with a kid, I've noticed that their perspective has helped me see past the mechanics and enjoy the game for what it is.
My gripe is simply the immature behaviour of a lot of people these days, whether they are 14 or 44, acting like a self-entitled, or elitist or foul mouthed or an all round jerk, just puts me off completely.

Still I'd like to ask how do you think a game designed for 20-year-olds differ from games designed for 30-year-olds? Or 40-year-olds? Does their situation of life affect their preferences in gaming that much? I think entertainment is pretty much separate. Some older values may be appreciated more by older gamers but thats about it.

This might make you even more sad.
all of those " kids " are actually adults who act like that on the internet. some where it became cool to what they call " troll " other people. some how it became cool to try and make others upset " are you mad bro? " and put others down.
the age of helping others and being nice to your fellow gamers is over, once WoW made MMOs main stream that all ended. now MMOs are full of adults who act like children or a bunch of emo cry babys who dont want to do anything but want everything right now! oh and every game sucks if you have to do anything to get to max level. and it really sucks if you have to use your brain and figure stuff out...that is just crazy talk.
I don’t see much difference in aiming games development at the 20’s instead of say the 30’s Quirhid. But games are increasingly made with the teen market in mind. They spend more on their hobbies than we do, so games are made for them. This makes them far more important in the minds of gaming houses than being 25% of MMO players would suggest. Teens are the ones who will buy more from a cash shop, or get the MMO tee-shirt and so on.
So what effect does this have? Well that depends on what games developers think teenagers want. In many areas I think they have it wrong, I think teens could handle games far more complex, involved and challenging than the easymode games of today. We did when I was a teenager and I don’t think teens are any less intelligent and dynamic today. But if all you have to play is dumbed down games, you are going to think that’s the norm.
Just as one example: if all the AAA game releases have you sitting back and watching video sequences you are going to start to believe that is what gaming is about – watching a video.

Sad thing is that immaturity gets worse with age... A lot of those "kids" are 25+ or even 30+... If you do not belive me try working in billing support for a while.. After having argued with several adult human beings over billing errors in the area of cents you get a entirely new respect for people in the sub 30 sektion... To be honest immaturity and bad languges skills have no connection to age.
I think a good solution would be servers only for adults.
The registration should be by kreditcard or passport or something that is near save. They could also take more money for playing on this servers, or a registation fee. Sure some smart ass kidds will manage somehow to play also on this servers, but this will be a minotiry.
I really dont unterstand why no company have done this before.
F2P is a kiddies charter, no credit card needed. But these days kids can get round credit cards by buying digital vouchers for many MMO's in stores. I know if I was that age and wanted to play a MMO I would be in a cabal with my mates coming up with ideas to get online. Showing just the sort of ingenuity and drive these modern MMO's seem to think teens lack.
Originally posted by colddog04 I was under the impression that the average age of MMORPG players has been increasing over the past decade.
Maybe, my impression might be tainted because I have been playing F2P lately. Would there be a difference between P2P and F2P?
there is no difference, otherwise people would stop crying that WoW is full of kids when it has a sub. Find an adult guild like someone else suggested. It might help. I dont care how old is people i play with, i dont have bussines conversation in game, and i dont have "my girlfriend is hotter than yours" teenage conversations in game either.... Im 26 and i play mmos to have fun playing with other people. I talk/read when i need to

Does their situation of life affect their preferences in gaming that much? I think entertainment is pretty much separate. Some older values may be appreciated more by older gamers but thats about it.
My 55-year-old uncle plays the same games I do although I'm more into RPGs and he's more into strategy games.
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been -Wayne Gretzky
To be fair -
Under 18 brats - many will get over it... that's just hormones and kid drama.
Over 30 brats - they are just stuck that way at this point.
Kids are annoying... adults behaving like kids are generally nasty.
This have been a good conversation
I think a good solution would be servers only for adults.
The registration should be by kreditcard or passport or something that is near save. They could also take more money for playing on this servers, or a registation fee. Sure some smart ass kidds will manage somehow to play also on this servers, but this will be a minotiry.
I really dont unterstand why no company have done this before.
there is no difference, otherwise people would stop crying that WoW is full of kids when it has a sub.
