So I ignored this game some reason until the free weekend, then found one of the best MMO games out there.
The story line is the most engrossing story line I've seen, love the opportunity to try more than one "class type" with the same character and the graphics put most MMOs to shame. TSW is kind of a mix between Myst, MMO and zombie shooter.
I allways wanted a Myst like MMO but what turned me off to the TSW in the beginning was the mature rating and the zombie shooter aspect. In the end the great story lines tie it all in really well making the mature subect matter actually add more to the game than I expected.
Did/does the mature rating turn anyone else way from The Secret World?

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
actually i am mature enough not to get scared away by some "mature setting". how ever that eas meant.
the problem with TSW, they said they have a good pvp system. they dont.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Why would a mature rating and it having zombies turn people off? I'm curious to hear as well because unless you're a young teenager I can't imagine why either would be off limits for you.
It's a good game glad you're having fun.
I dont think so, that the setting is that big hurdle.
They have bad luck with the timing, GW2 and MOP be in the minds of 99% of the players, DayZ is the Zombi-Shooter-Survival experience, the market of mmos is much too crowded and Funcom sucessfully worked to get a real bad reputation the way they handled AoC that is not forgiven yet.
So to me its a mix of many reasons why it did not take off.
A mature rating is really no problem in Europe, have read its more a problem in the US but i have no clue if that is the case.
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"

Actually, the mature rating was one aspect of the game that attracted me to try it out. I am sick of sparkle ponies, man. The average age of an MMORPG player is supposed to be in their thirties. Considering, I just can’s see how rating alone would turn people away from giving it a try.
This is why I can't figure out why everyone loves cartoon fantasy worlds. You're all in your 20's/30's, you would think sparkle ponies and cartoons would maybe be something you've outgrown. I can understand liking fantasy but a more realistic less cartoon fantasy (which companies won't make either)...maybe lotro would fall in the less cartoony fantasy category.
TSW = HOT stuff
The rating is there for a reason, no reason it should stop anyone from playing it.
Think they did a steller job, I for one would be playing this for a long time 2 come.
Bite Me
The main thing that turned me off with the mature rating was it looked like blood and guts were going to be the main aspect of the game, which is actually far from true, the story line is.
With a 6 and 8 year old to often watch me game I wasn't comfortable with them watching me play a blood and guts game. Of course there are even more bloody games on Roblox which my kids play. Also, zombies have never been an interest for me. But with the story line, it all fits together very well.
I think at least in my case, this is one reason I didn't feel compelled to buy TSW. Mmos for me are about escapism, and I prefer to escape to a fantastical, beautful world as opposed to a dark, horrific one.
But I will look twice at mature rated games because I hate censorship. In this case though, the mature rating wasn't sufficient to overcome my ennui with the genre.
Mmos take a big time commitment and I find myself asking, best case scenario what satisfaction will I get from this game based on its design philosophy, because hype just isn't enough to make me pull the trigger anymore. In the case of TSW, that threshhold to pull the trigger and purchase didn't happen.
Can't say that I have ever played any game for the setting or rating.
My reasons for not liking TSW had more to do with the boring combat, horrible character faces and because I really didn't think it was that fun.
i can't remember the last time i actually looked at the mature rating in any game i play.
as for TSW i looked at some youtube clips and found nothing of interesting. it looked like a AoC in the modern world (eww) with zombies(lame), with rifles, and samurai swords, and a lot of cutscenes....just not what i'm looking for sorry.
well, if it is the dark and moody setting that scares away people, then why are we laughing at emos and are not scared of them? *G*
a setting does not drive away people.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
I think there are a few things that turn people away from TSW that have nothing to do with the mature rating.
First, I think, is the fact that it's a story heavy MMO. The last story heavy MMO that came out was TOR, and lots of people didn't like the fact that there was little to do once the story was over, and to an extent I believe the same thing happens in TSW. The monthly content updated aliviates this a bit, but the perception is still there. Also I do believe that this (along with the bugs) is the main reason the review scores have been relatively low for it. If you read the reviews, there are lots of cases where the score seems significantly lower than what the review text would indicate, I think TOR left a sour note in several reviewers mouth when it was scored so high and then once people ran trough the story started leaving the game.
Timing. MMOs are considered long term investments, and TSW came out a couple of months before the two behemoth MMO launches this year (GW2 and MoP). I know lots of people that would have been interested in TSW but didn't play because they had already gotten GW2, or were resubbing to WoW for MoP.
The Funcom effect. I do believe this was a big one among the more experienced MMO population. The problems with both Age of Conan and AO left a sour taste in lots of peoples mouth, and even people that never played those have heard about "failcom". TSW had a great and stable launch (except for a few bugs here and there), and honestly deserved much better.
I have to agree here, I don't think the setting is really one big thing that turns people off, and actually lots of us are (well, were, I'm taking a break for GW2) playing mainly because of the setting and atmosphere of the game, and at least in my (very limited and subjective) perception, there are as many people turnes off by the setting as there are that are (in their own words) "tired of elves".
What can men do against such reckless hate?
You played WOW and are currently playing Vanguard and are in your 30's, but in your post it's all "you people" that played cartoon games with sparkle ponies...
Me thinketh the pot called the kettle black...
The mature rating and the dark theme is exatly what made me want to play TSW.. I hat all these super colorfull fantasy games but thats the kind of person i am... Guess i have always been into the darker side of life if you know what i maen lol..
I am sure some people dont like that kind of thing tho..
Nah 'mature' thing does not turn people away. Happy fantasy child games do crash and burn as well.
Besides TSW is not really that mature. Actually it is more of 'grotesque' and almost as infantile as 'Tales from the Crypt' imo.
Excessive preteen-esque fantasy will turn away more than a mature rating ever will.
I'm a thirty year old NEET neckbeard - bring on the "mature" elements.
I think it's great! My favorite line the game so far was 'I thought it was going to be all coke and bj's.'. No lie.
