You have to give it about a month or three to get real reviews. Of course right now everyone will say its the best mmo out there because they do not want to feel dumb for wasting the $ on a new overhyped product.
"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."
WoW mostly owned the show because it was the only blockbuster game at the time, and so people just stuck with it.
WoW owned the show because nothing released after it was particularly good. LOTRO was the closest, but its clunky combat really hurt it bg time. Vanguard? worst launch ever. WAR? Developers had no clue, major balance issues, Good PvE content that never was supported further. AoC? I personally couldnt get into it at all, so cant comment much on it. Rift? Generic, soulless, cramped and tiny. If you want to see what I mean by soulless explore meridian or sanctum, and talk to the npcs and just look around. Then go to any of the GW2 cities and do the same. SWToR? Awful, awful world design, less than thrilling combat. TERA? Fun combat, absolutely hideous in any other game play aspect. Its been a giant stream of turds, with LOTRO and Rift being the only games even worth spending yor free month in. On top of that the classic games got old, and EQ2 has declined sharply the last few years.
As opposed to when you had EQ, DAoC, AC, UO, and SWG. There are more titles now, but the compeition isnt nearly as good.
CLarifying one point. WAR was killed by WoW players. The design of WAR was intended to have players RvR in the lakes on every map all the way up as they leveled. Instead, players only PvP'd on the instanced 'games' which were only intended as training maps. Unfortunately, since everyone had been so used to WoW's battlegrounds, they didnt flood the RvR lakes and each map'd zone became empty and useless. The devs made a fatal error by encouraging the instanced PvP games by releasing more content in them in response to the player bases' requests on the forums. This basically killed the game. WAR did recover a little over a year after it died when the old DAoC players took over and started playing the RvR like it was meant to be played. It was then that it became a good game.
Good eye the Spvp gives no xp thus WvW is on queue for 4 hours plus.
When someone criticizes GW2 focusing on aspects of GW1 they didnt like, i tend to assume they havent played the game, no matter wht they say. The only thing GW2 and GW1 have in common is lore. Anyone who has played both games for more than 3 mins can tell you that.

I won't debate with you on the merit of all those games, mostly because it will be your opnion versus my opinion, but I suggest that you might be viewing the old games with rose tinted glasses. I have done this a lot too, because I long for my EQ days again, but frankly EQ was a mess of a game compared to what came after it. It had some great points, but most of it was terrible. I play on and off on Project 1999 for my nostalgia fix, but overall the game is mostly about sitting around for long hours doing almost nothing. That kind of design doesn't work anymore for players.
Frankly, and it burns me to say this, but every single one of the new games you listed is a better and more exciting game than my all time favorite mmo (which is as I said, EQ1).
Completely disagree. EQ1 is my least favorite of the golden age MMORPGs, but its still miles better than uninspired clone garbage like LotRO and Rift and SWTOR.
The reason WoW took off and stayed afloat is because it was the first MMO to have a marketing campaign and brand name recognition. A full year of videos interview banner adds on every website and magazine, every casual knew WoW was coming, and that's who WoW roped in. Momentum has kept it going. And no other AAA has come along trying to sell a different game, only more WoW clones. Why would people leave WoW for WoW? Its very simple.
The only company that tried to do anything different was Sigil with Vanguard, but then their publisher forced them out 8 months early.

Even though the queue sucks. I still view it as a good thing. Have you played WAR, WoW, etc. WAR was especially bad about over rewarding people in the instanced PvP and it literally killed the RvR portion of the game when it first released.
However, GW2 does reward progress by the ranking system that goes all the way to 80. Gives you the ability to gain tickets to do the paid tournies that award real cash at the end, great looking gear and weapons, titles, and probably more.
People should understand these are the first days of release. It will always be packed until people get back into a regular routine. Just like other games. Don't know why people keep forgetting that.
Regarding the OP's point of GW2 feeling like GW1, I rolled my first character today, he had the same name, race, profession, look, and pet of my main on GW1, and after crafting, doing hearts, DEs, pvp, vistas and everything else I could, I can say this game isn’t just dissimilar to GW1, it is in most ways the opposite. The sense of togetherness, freedom and exploration, the uniqueness of your class, the life of the world, this is a real mmo, better than most and GW1 wasn’t even an mmo after all, in fact when they starting playing the Ascalon theme as my brown coated long haired cat petted ranger ran past the houses, I felt like I was in a different world with a faintest echo of the original, but the differences are profound.

People do need to realize on the WvW that there are multiple queues for it as well. Yes, the main map is the Eternal, and its tough to get into on FULL servers right now, but there are 3 Borderlands which you can also queue up for. They are no less important than Eternal is, yet I find at least one is always ready the instant I request to enter. WvW scores on what is owned by a server, points are counted for each supply camp, each tower, each keep, etc. If your server ignores the borderlands and you let your opponents take them over, you will be at a disadvantage on Eternal. The point of all this is if Eternal is queued, try the Boarderlands and join them until Eternal is ready. All you have to do is hit the portal for Eternal from inside the Borderland and queue for it while you WvW.
As for the Spvp, one point which should be made is that all those nice weapons and armor rewards you get in there are only usable in Spvp. Dont expect to work your way up in Spvp and take that stuff into WvW to own face, because you wont be able to. Spvp is like Vegas baby, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

I dont think its going to fall below TORtanic levels of let down but this isnt a sustainable model of game for the MMO sphere. Its an interesting single player experience but it feels a little to similar to GW 1 when it omes to the "MMO" aspects needed to sustain a community.
This game is already not living up to the hype.
If GW2 is not a sustainable model for a game...then what is?
apparently there is no sustainable model. PPL have poo poo'd, Freemium, B2P, P2P, and everything else. LOL, in fact, they are all losing money and they will all be closing up shop in the next 30 days.
There is one more model to explore: Pay us large sums of cash to play plus hookers/blow.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

Well I think most of us here that have been around for more than one MMO launch can tell that this game is getting way way WAY more hype than the gameplay is actually worth. I think the main reason for this is
a) how transparent Anet has been with their ideas, processes, and development videos
and
b) how long its been since we've seen an MMO that goes back and borrows game design elements from Golen Age era MMOs instead of WoW.
Doesn't that justify the hype alone? Or at least some excitement?
I cant tell you how long I have been waiting for something not Wow-like or Wow mechanics under the covers. Stand still / keytab / hotbar combat has been done to death. Quest hubs? Linear progression? Sick of all of it. Its a good mechanic but has been overdone and its great to see an attempt to do something different with this level of commitment.
I challenge all other developers to do better, so at least I can have some options of what to play instead of playing the same thing with a different skin for a sub fee.
In my opinion its well deserved as the game is quality, and entertaining and cant wait to see how they plan to expand it further down the line.
In regards to GW2, there seems to be two camps. One camp sees value in playing GW2 a couple months at a time in between subscription-based games or very casually for a number of years. The second camp expects GW2 to replace WoW, Rift, EVE or any other pay-to-play MMO as their new virtual homeworld for years to come.
I think the second camp will be disappointed a few months down the road, when the new experience isn't so new anymore and when they found out that playing a cooperative game "just because it's fun" isn't really a viable long-term plan. For them, I doubt this game will live up to the hype. There simply isn't a viable long-term hook to the game.
For the first camp, they should be more than satisfied. The concept behind the original Guild Wars has been fleshed out and expanded to resemble a fully-fledged MMORPG, but keeping true to the GW name, you're not going to be on a gear greadmill. You can pick up and play when you feel like it rather than feeling forced to play in order to keep up with your friends or guildmates. Content updates and expansions, random PvP matches, e-sport tournaments, and WvW will keep this game as a viable pick-up-and-play title for years to come.
Doesn't that justify the hype alone? Or at least some excitement?
Shrug. Don't care what people feel is "justfied", or not.
It's refreshing to hear happy people again.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. Notice how nobody dares to mention the cash shop. I think its great that we'll never have to hear anybody ever complain about cash shops since this one is acceptable.
Of course it won't live up to the hype. It's hype. I don't know about the rest of your points, but the initial statement is fairly accepted by most people (I hope).

I'm very, very happy with this game! No matter what all the sceptics and haters say, there is no game out that you can get this much entertainment value for the price. Single player or MMO. NONE. If you don't like the game simply don't play it and you lose nothing at all.
Back to the game I go.

join up the mmorpg.com guild. We could run a tourny.
I for one am loving it. I have no idea how the OP can call it single player, and compare it to the lobby/dungeon crawl that was GW1.
GW2 has some great open world exploring and everything is group focused except for the class story which unlike TOR is a small part of the game.
