Yes. Just like Funcom did when AoC launched. Sounds look a good way for damage control to me. Who knows maybe their forum database was hacked and thats why everyone is getting so many password reset emails.

Was just gonna say this, excellent damage control on their part.
People tend to do most of the complaining during the first few days at launch. People looking into buying the game often check the official forum to see what the general consensus is. Solution? Close forums to limit any bad mouthing from unhappy users. If it worked for China/Cuba, I don't see how it wouldn't work for ArenaNet.
Yeah, they better have a good reason that goes beyond the "Didn't want to deal with the massive load that would otherwise happen if we allowed people to the forum".
Being the optimist I choose to believe they have focused all their resources on getting things ironed out during launch and when they can free up some manpower they will open the forums.

Then they should have taken the economic hit and hired temporary workers from a staffing agency, why aren't they?
Talk about conspiracy. GW forums are down, specifically due to damage control with the rampant hacking and phishing of accounts; and today MMORPG.com is locking all threads rgeards to the email hacks.

Well I could answer that but then my under cover status would be compromised.....

Sorry, not directed specifically at you, but I always find it funny when people just say things like these "just hire a few more guys and get it solved now". It's never as easy as just hiring some temp worker, point them at the forum and tell them "have at it". Even a temp worker would first need to be interviewed and cleared by human resources, introduce the company, their philosophy, and just how they do things and the internal procedures, and then they could start working but first they'd need to see what the previous workers did and how does it work before they can start actually trying to fix anything.
In my professional experience, if it's for any kind of specialized work, it can take weeks for someone you just hired to become actually productive for a company, and until that point they can actually lower productivity as a whole because you need someone to train and supervise them.

Closed ... they didn't close them. They were never opened. They said all along that they would open at launch or soon after. Beta forums were always meant to be temporary.
If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.

Which is why companies that expect the need of temporary workforce for a few months should have systems in place to make the introduction go as smooth as possible. MMORPG companies belong to that category. I can buy that companies that are not expecting a massive load don't have such systems in place, but MMORPG companies don't have that excuse. I suppose it comes down to management that happened to be bad in this instance.
Why do people assume it's a manpower issue? If they have the manpower to suspend people for inappropiate conduct and to post a bazillion tweets each day, then they have the manpower to run a forum because that's literally all it takes: some staffing to make announcements/respond to players (like they do on Twitter) and to suspend people for inappropiate conduct.
They basically said to not expect the forums to open until after launch. I'm more inclined to believe it was an attempt to damage control (genius) rather than lack of staffing (incompetency on their part). If you saw the Diablo 3 forums during launch, then you know what launch day errors and people getting their account hacked can do to the image of a game in the forums.
I don't blame them. If I ran a game I'd keep the forums closed during release too. Might not be the most honest thing to do, but it sure as hell keeps a lot of angry rants from seeing the light of day.
Going to have to agree with everyone else on the theory of they don't want possible buyers to see the complaints of players off the launch. If this holds true, thats a dick move.

So you are saying they had working beta forums and then closed them after beta and now have no working live forums? One must wonder why they don't utilize the working beta foums....
Also, do the same people working on the game work on their web site / forums? I would think getting forums up and running is a different skill set from game development...

I doubt it's this, not because I don't think they wouldn't like to prevent possible buyers from seeing complains, but because if they use the same forum system than in beta, possible buyers couldn't see the forums at all since you do need a valid account to be able to read them, while they can indeed see twitter, facebook, reddit and other forums that they have been using as a form of communication.
If they only wanted to prevent possible buyers from watching complains, then it would be on their best interest to actually open the forums, and direct any complain to them were possible buyers couldn't see them.
