ATI'S Answer to SLI!

ATI Radeon X800 CrossFire Edition 256MB

ATI will release the Radeon X800 CrossFire Edition 256MB for $299 and the Radeon X800 CrossFire Edition 128MB for $249, these video cards will work with all Radeon X800 based video cards.

Our ATI CrossFire setup clearly outperformed its single-card counterparts. The setup truly shines when we raise resolutions and quality settings as it's able to maintain high frame rates quite well. A pair of Radeon X850 XTs performed well against the higher priced pair of BFG GeForce 7800 GT OCs in SLI. The CrossFire Radeon X850 XT setup offers more performance than a single GeForce 7800 GTX, but two Radeon X850 cards do cost a couple hundred dollars more than a single GeForce 7800 GTX.

AHHAHA here is the new CROSSFIRE commercial for ATI

don't forget, you'll get caught up in the... CROSSFIRE!!!

Ah, I loved listening to that commercial. Never played the game but the commercial never bothered me any. Plus it's parodied around the world like on YTMND and here it seems :P

I've never really seen a reason to get SLI no Crossfire.  I mean if I had the money to just throw away I might get one or the other.  But I've yet to NEED one.  I don't compete or anything in FPS' so the extra boost in power isn't exactly needed for me.  I mostly play MMORPGs, but they cap frames per second and usually my graphics card has no problem handling it.  Atleast so far.

I myself just bought a SLI motherboard and a single PCIe card. It's not like you have to buy it all at once. 300 dollars here 400 hundred dollars there.

The reason thought that I buy expensive equipment is because gamming and computing is my life hobby. It is the thing I do. Some people love cars and build them. I love computers and build them.

Gaming is my hobby also, but I don't buy it because I have no point at all in doing so.  There's no game that I currently, nor intend to play that would ever require that much power.

It'd be like buying a Ferrari and never getting out of the School Zones where the speed limit doesn't exceed 20 m.p.h.  Sure, I have the power, but I'll never use it....ever.

True, but at least you have the Ferrari for when they open the highways up :P

I'm not sure how you could say there's no game that you intend to play that would ever require that much power. Do you intend to play games In a couple years? here will probably be a requirement for that much power at some point in the future.

When the video cards start making eggs and bacon in the morning or go get me a cold beer, then I will spend 400 bucks on one.

Downside to the crossfire is it requires its own chipset and special motherboard, just like SLI does. However. now that SLI boards have been out for 10 months, they're becoming rather common, whereas the ATI version boards are still fairly rare.

It's all just for the ultra-hardcore enthusiast at this point. Both systems have their plusses and minuses. It'll be more interesting a year or so from now, when these systems become a bit more commonplace.

I may be playing in a couple of years, I may not.  I may wake up one day and realize I'm sick of playing PC games and never touch another one for the rest of my days, and thus spending the money would be a waste.  Then again I may spend $1200 on a setup and die before ever using it.

In a couple of years, IF games require it, yes I'll get it.  Until developers say "Btw, Crossfire/SLI is needed or you will throw your PC out of the window"  I'm not getting it.  And even then, they'd have to be saying it about games I want.

Am I the only one being around when you could hook up two voodoo cards (like this SLI business) to get better perfomance?
(There where also 3d-glasses in the bundle but they where total crap: low resolution & low update frequency made your head hurt after a while).

  • aeric67aeric67 Member UncommonPosts: 798

Yep, I had a dual voodoo setup for a while.

i never liked ati anyway. i dont buy stock nvidias either.

the best cards IMO are the BFG tech series.

but i really dont want to get into a technical debate....

I have watercooling so i can always overclock!

Am I right in assuming that only one of the graphics cards has to be a Crossfire card? So if I already have an X850 XT, I can just get another X850 XT Crossfire edition and they will work in Crossfire mode (assuming my mobo is ATI chipset and all)?

Assuming your Mobo is Crossfire-ready, yes. Teh Crossfire card acts as the "master" card, and the base card acts as the "slave" doing whatever the Crossfire tells it to. In fact, the cards don't even have to match - you can put a X850 and X800 together, for instance.
