why is there no dev that is willing to re-skin older good MMOs?

I mean, if you take game like Vanguard, EQ2, Ultima, Runescape FFXI... and re work them to have Cry Engine graphics that can match games like Aion, or it can be still 2D ( in the case of Ultima ), but make the grapics like D3 etc2..

i am sure lots of people would really re-play them because i do know a lot of gamers love visuals + good gameplay = win

games nowadays lack that gameplay that we used to have in the older MMO, but really good visiual, which is awesome

but imagine if they take older MMO and make them visually good, damn i would really even sub back to those MMO

So What Now?

I think most of the issues with those MMO's arn't the reskinning aspect.

I know with FFXI they have changed it so much that I wouldn't even know where to start going back to it. And the Abyssia update killed the game IMO.

And Vanguard, a reskin wouldn't fix teh bugs.

    etc...

While many have said they just had a hard time accepting the UO graphics, I really can't recall any thread or article where a person said the graphics of VG, FFXI or EQ2 were the reason they stopped playing.

"but imagine if they take older MMO and make them visually good, damn i would really even sub back to those MMO"

For a year and then the graphics would be outdated and you'd be on to the next game. You've just explained exactly why it isn't a smart idea.

Graphics are just one part of the issue, though.  You could take some of the older games - use an engine that would make most computers cry* - but it would not matter, because it's still going to be the game it was.  If it was a simple case of making a clone with a nifty engine, the game would be out there.  The market's changed - what the mainstream wants...well...they've got.

    * You're also going to face an issue with a state of the art engine that folks simply are not going to be able to run it.  Take a look at Steam's hardware survey for a general idea...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

well of course you dont quit because of the graphics, i, for one, still love to go back to VG just to see what;s going on, but at least old MMO that are dead, i see so many people keep saying they wish the game would get a remake with different dev. and i think that by enhancing new graphics, it will surely bring back the player base because, i am sure if there is a re work of an old game, a lof of the users who used to play the game would be interested to try the game once more

although, maybe a re-skin is not enough because yes, it will be the same game, only with nicer graphics, well, maybe i should have said a re-make of the game by different dev

    So What Now?

There is no profit in it or at least the devs claim there is not.

I can use the perfect example>>FFXI

So many people loved the game, all they wanted was updated graphics and housing.Square said it was near impossible, the time would cost them a lot with no profit in it.So they set out to whip together the failed FFXIV,they learned a big lesson, simply making better graphics is not enough.

Now what SHOULD happen is developers like Blizzard for example who have made multi millions from the users, should show some respect and give back to the game in form of FREE content and graphic updates.Continuing on the Wow trend, that game right now is among the lowest quality MMORPG's on the market of the big name games. It is the only game i can see a tree or rock texture that does not look like either. You can take the severely restricted FFXI game and ALL textures look realistic.

It takes a lot of work to make HQ textures, especially in olders games that are so robust.plus you have to realize that more poly count can severaly raise the lag issue,so they would maybe have to redesign the whole map,or like many games do,have less mobs, less objects.

The BEST effort i have ever seen was when UT99 came out,the Epic games staff created two sets of textures, one high quality and one low.Considering the era of 1999 those HQ textures looked pretty darn good, they made drab looking walls look a lot nicer.I feel EVERY game now should be designed with the highest quality graphics then allow players to adjust the depth.

updating graphic requirements wont help older games as the entire game eng is built from the ground up to make use of newer graphics the game would require retweeks to the animations and other eng parts that both A) make use of the higher quality graphics and B) actually allow the textures to match up and mesh correctly on the skeleton.

the price required to do that wouldnt really be worth while from a company standpoint as they would need not only new 3d artists to remake 100% of the game textures, but 3d models to make sure the new textures mesh correctly  then bring back the game coders to retweek the code to allow for the update.

mod based textures dont really add to the game they make use of the game's eng. if the eng doesnt allow for it, you cant really do it 100% :/

id love to see some games get a retweek but i just dont see it as a viable choice for companies trying to make money off it :/

Put real life graphics on swtor and it's still a turd. people get bored with games and move on. It's like a girl, she could be the hottest chick ever but if she's annoying as hell, you bang her a few times and move on because you can't stand her anymore.

Only reason I dont play FFXI anymore and I mean the only reason is because Abyssea changed the game for the worse. Its not the FFXI back in the Zilart or even CoP days. I could see they were starting to casualize the game when ToAU came out and WoTG just made it more apparent. Then Abyssea just sealed the deal.

But if they did a reboot of FFXI back to Zilart/CoP days or even before I would be all over it in a heart beat, or a remake with some (keyword there, because I like FFXI's art and style) upgrades. With the same direction FFXI had when CoP was being released, I would play that game and never look back.

But what we’re targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo

    Mainly because of two things.

First, it's not as easy as just "re-skinning"... it would mean basically creating the whole world, every NPC, mob, character and graphic from scratch, plus a substantial rewrite of the game engine itself to support the new graphics and technology. "Re-skinning" an older game wouldn't be that much easier than creating a new one to begin with.

Second... tastes have changed. Waiting for days for a particular open world mob to spawn was considered good back then, but just wouldn't work today. Re-creating a classic game and hoping it would be succesful today would be going trough the fine line between altering it enough so that the newer generation of gamers likes it, and not enough that would incur on the wrath of whoever played it back then, a balance that would most likely end up being not good for either side.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

The older mmos were in nature hardcore by todays standards. Which there is a crowd for but we are appearently the crowd the developers care to invest in any longer. So i dont think it is the graphics as much as the mechanics

I left in late 07'? I think..something like that, and I tried to pick it up again in 2010.. but Abyssea had come out. and I HATED the way it changed the game.
