Completely new to WOW, need suggestions

jugularveinjugularvein Member UncommonPosts: 371

Hi all,

As stated in the title, I am thinking about getting WOW and YES I have never played it before in my life.  From this, I have a few questions concerning the game and any help would be much appreciated.

1.  If I do decide to pick up WOW, do I need to pick up all the expansions?  Reason I ask this is due to Cataclysm.  I heard that Cataclysm changes the game world entirely.  If thats the case should I play through it without the expansion first?  Or is it okay to start from scratch with Cataclysm?

2.  Do the expansions come with a free month?  I am planning on picking up the battlechest, but does the other expansions also come with free months?

3.  I am not a huge raider and I like pvp from time to time...Will I enjoy the game if I like the pve aspect?  Or will I be forced to raid or pvp ?

4.  I dont mind running solo, actually I prefer it due to lack of time being able to play.  Will I still enjoy the game if I am able to just put in 1-2 hours every other day?

5.  How does this death knight work?  I heard you have to get 1 character to a certain level to unlock it.

Any other suggestions or help for a completely new player to WOW would be great.  I am looking for a game that I can stick with honestly over a month.  I was really excited about D3, The Secret World, Rift and GW2, but in the end I wasn't that pulled in to renew my subs or continue playing.

Thanks for the help!

Op - no subscriber mmo that I'm aware of gives a free month w expansions

players get a free month with new accounts after buying the game

my advice is dload the WOW starter edition

    https://us.battle.net/account/creation/wow/signup/

you can upgrade that -- including MOP and all expansions,  for grand total of $60.00 on the Battlenet site

    1. You don't need to pick up the expansions, you'll just need to pick them up when you hit max lvl of the game and/or expansion you already have, but if you're going for battlechest, you'll get em all in one go, I'm not sure MoP is in it, but I guess you know if it is or not, from looking at the purchase / page.

    2. Expansions do not come with a free month, only the original game.

3.There is dungeons for justice points / valor points, so you can get good gear without raiding, not sure if they changed any of this in MoP, but if something is changed it's most likely in the favor of the casuals, and not the hardcore raiders.

    4. You can enjoy it solo, with friends, guildies, randoms.

    5. I think you need to have a lvl 55, so if you want to play deathknight, you just lvl to 55, go create the Death Knight, and the DK will start at 55 as well.

No other suggestions, I don't play it myself, have played it a bit in the past though, hope you enjoy it.

Battle Chest now includes Wrath of the Lich King, so all your will need is Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. It is well worth it imho. You will enjoy your time in the game, and there is plenty of content incoming with Mists and beyond :D

    1. See Nadia's post above mine. Good answers there :)

    2. Again, Nadia did a great job answering this one.

    3. WoW has 3 server types: PvE, PvP, and Roleplaying Preferred. They have added Open World PvP, but I do not know for sure if it is just PvP servers or not that they added this to. PvE servers did have consensual PvP, as in a player may request to "duel" you and you can then decline or accept. There are also battlegrounds where teams of PvPers go to have at each other :)

    4. Soloing is not a problem in WoW. I think you will enjoy the leveling aspect. The endgame, though, consists of daily grinds, be it raids for gear, daily quests, or dungeon runs to get gear. You may or not enjoy that aspect.

    5. Death Knight becomes available when you get a character to level 55, I think. That is the level a new Death Knight starts out at. It also requires the Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) expansion.

One thing I should mention. Cataclysm DID indeed change the world of Azeroth. The old world is gone now, no matter what expansions you have or don't have, the changes affect all players. There is no playing "the old game" first, then picking up Cataclysm.

Here is a link to WoW's Basic Game Guide.

If you purchase World of Warcraft, I hope you enjoy your experience :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Thank you all for the replies.

To be honest, I am an older gamer and I really wanted to enjoy some of the newer stuff that came out.  I will admit I liked Rift, Secret World, and GW2, BUT it just didnt have the power to keep me drawn to the game.  I figured now would be a good time to check out WOW since its about 8 years old and still going strong.  I figure if people were able to play this for years+, it might have that something special that would keep me going.

I will take the recommendation to download the trial and buy the expansions from there.  If I do go for the game then I probably for sure will get Catacylsm first since I would like Goblin or Worgen to be my main.

The battlechest that I saw was at Best Buy.  It only included both the Stater and BC editions.  Not sure where there is a battlechest with Lich King in it.

Only other thing I heard about the game is the marketplace.  I heard the prices can be pretty overpriced.

Thanks all and if you have anymore tips or tid bits feel free to comment

    Side note:

As with most games which Races/classes are the most popular and which are the least popular.  Also, which is most group friendly and which are more solo friendly?

    Thanks

i could be wrong but i think you will pay more if you buy one expansion at a time

Blizzards upgrade deal where you get 45% off all expansions - only applies when you buy all at once

I have other WOW accts that never bought WOW Cata

those accts are not being given any discount deals to upgrade to MOP

    regarding Goblin / Worgen

races are no longer tied to expansions -- you can play whatever race you want -- now :)

    Holy Balls thats awesome!

I am glad to see that they are allowing any race to be played with any expansion.

I also see what you mean.  If you buy all expansions in bulk that is where the biggest discount will be.

I am unable to go on the WOW website do to work firewalls ;) ;)

If I buy all expansions at once what does the total cost look like?

    Thanks again!

I just wanted to clarify this one for you.  Cataclysm was a very unique expansion in that the game world changed for EVERYONE regardless of what expac you had.  The price of Cataclysm was basically an unlock key for content that is already there,  i.e. zones and dungeons and, at the time, for the new races which are now available to everyone.

So if you start with  Original, Burning Crusade, Lich King, cata or MoP, the world is the same (BC, LK, MoP have their own continents being the ONLY major difference)

I'm thinking of joining WoW for the first time too, so thanks for this thread :D

Most of my friends seem to be going back to WoW with MoP so I think I might finally join them. I've reached decent gear and level in Allods Online, have done my time in Path of Exile and just found GW2 a bit boring, so until Allods new expansion, Wulin or DayZ comes out I want try something new and I reckon WoW will be it

    Awesome ya and your welcome!

I realize WoW gets a bad rap and I'm sure there are things to it that doesn't always please everyone but as I stated before if it can keep my attention for more than a month then I will be very happy.  I played the crap out of GW2 (AND LOVED IT) but after 90%+ completition and WvW not doing it I just don't see why to login anymore. (until new content)

Don't spread misinformation please. As far as I am aware, WoW is one of the ONLY subscription games that requires you to buy the original + each expansion seperate.

Once an expansion comes out in any other game, and you buy it, you get all the prior expansions that came before it, as well as the original game. Case in point, go check out EQ2. They only need you to buy the latest expansion, and you get everything that came before it (8 expansions plus the game).

But hey... when you have a game with as much mass appeal as WoW, you can money grub as much as you want.

Thank you for the wonderful post Sephastus. Unfortunatately your little rant is completly unrelated to the post you quoted.

The post was saying that, if you buy an expansion, does it include a free month. It has nothing to do with EQ2's inclusion of all previous content, or Blizzards ability to genertate revenue. That aside, I'm sure you feel better getting your little rant off your chest.

    that wasnt misinformation

buy an EQ2 expansion for an existing account - you do not get a free month

every mmo i know of, only gives a free month w new accts

It is $59.99 for the Battle Chest (Basic WoW + Burning Crusade + Wrath of the Lich King), Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. These are digital downlaods from the BattleNet (WoW) site.

As far as the most popular race question goes, I found this info on a site called US Realm Pop that supposedly measures WoW information :)
    http://wow.realmpop.com/us.html

Here are the basics from that site (Based on US Servers):
    Human (Alliance Side) - 16.2%
Blood Elf (Horde Side) - 14%
Night Elf (Alliance Side) - 10.9%
    Worgen (Alliance Side) - 8.4%
    Tauren (Horde Side) - 7.5%
    Draenei (Alliance Side) - 7.5%
    Undead (Horde Side) - 6.6%
    Orc (Horde Side) - 6.4%
    Troll (Horde Side) - 6.2%
    Goblin (Horde Side) - 5.5%
    Gnome (Alliance Side) - 5%
    Dwarf (Alliance Side) - 4.7%

This was kind of fun looking this stuff up :)

so very true. so many games that do many things so much better than WoW, and yet....i have yet to find a game that sucks your soul quite like WoW.

however even WoW has lost a lot of that "addictiveness" in the last few years. It's lost it's mojo.

Like someone else mentioned, the battlechest now takes you to level 80.  That is a TON of content.  If you level and find you like it up to 80, go from there.  I think you can also pick worgen and goblin races with the battlechest .  Questing is pretty simple and you are guided the entire way.

  • stratasaurusstratasaurus Member Posts: 220
Blood elf is the most played horde race and I think human is the most played alliance race.  As of right now Pandaren would be the least played race since it just came out.  I believe other then that gnome is the least played race on Alliance and I'm not sure about Horde I believe it is undead.  If you don't know what you want to play I suggest picking a class that allows you to do all 3 rolls(not at once but you can change between them and have 2 active "specs")  The classes that allow this would be druid, paladin, and monk.

FFXI  entire game is 19.99 on Steam with one free month and free in game item [a pretty decent hat].

Asking if you enjoy the PVE is VERY simple ,i can answer it as anyone can.

There is ONLY two types of design for PVE that i know of,one is to kill creatures for xp and one is to run linear quests that bascially hold your hand and tel lyou where to go next. Many games add an unrealsitic variable giving free xp just for exploring,i fail to see how your player becomes a more experienced Warrior just becuase he sees a new zone, but whatever to each their own.

I prefer the fun of using my player in combat over following quest markers, but alas i understand we have different opinions.

Wow is simply put a linear questing game.FFXi is the ONLY game i know of that is a combat xp game, where you get NO xp for quests.

There is yet one more aspect weather the PVE can be soloed or takes a group.ALL games now  can sort of be soloed, however some content still needs a group in most games. The cool thing is many games can now be duoed or trio,so a few friends can have some fun without the need for a full group.

You see all those foul claims by ANET were FalSE,there is no NEED for a group anywhere anymore.

My honest opinion, sseing how you have never played Wow till now,i assume you are new to rpg's,Wow will do you fine as it has a very low learning curve.

IMO EQ2 is of course the best value as it is free with restricitions, most don't spend until higher levels.FFXI is imo the next best buy after that i can see WOW being reasonable ONLY if yo uget all the content for free [excpet the newest of course].

Give it up now if your ever intending to run as a candidate for politcal office . Don't tell  your friends of family you play it and what ever you do don't call yourself Amanda the Panda .

Being serious now on your fist character use gathering proffessions like herbilsm and mining . Sell the materials on the auction house and you'll earn lots of gold .

Levels 1-20 just quest for a bit

Levels 20-80 I would pvp in the battlegrounds if your not new to playing games because you will get fed up with grinding dungeons that its impossible to fail at unless you have one arm and have extremly bad eyesight. Questing is pretty much the same your superman in a world where theres no kryptonite .

80-90 you night find some sort of reasonably challenging pve .

End game grind raids and dungeons and battlegrounds untill you lose all hope of having a life .

Alternativly  play Guild Wars 2 . And Planet Side 2 and the War Z when they are released . You'll not have to worry about subscriptions each month .

I would imagine there will be more buy to play games in future and to be honest from what I've seen of two of those three games they make Warcraft look old hat .

If you havent decided yet, I would suggest the free trial. Play a few classes to 20, then decide on the purchase. For a new player, the game world may be fun to explore.
Avoid pvp until 60 or 70. See the world instead. The pvp will be a stompfest due to heirlooms until after 60 when you start getting pvp gear.
