Am I missing something here?

I dunno, I thought it is glaringly obvious that they knew DF was somewhat low on pop so they decide to upgrade the graphics alittle, make a new world with a new UI and call it a new game? Maybe optimize the game for better performance.

I come here and I get a whole bunch of "omg I can't wait to try it" well you can, you can buy the game right now.

Is the price going to be 50 dollars? what are the new features? Is there going to be a new combat system? Or is it going to be the same but changing numbers/calculations around to make it more diverse? To me it sounds like a company making their last ditch effort to stay alive.

I know I am basing this all on speculation but... the few clips they showed it looks like the same overall game.

    Yes, you are missing something.

    Read up on the available facts and you'll see that DF:UW is basically a new game.

    All I could find was a bunch of screenshots and some descriptions of the first Darkfall game

    Yes, you are missing some things.

    Darkfall 1.0's underlying game archetecture was novel, and made by this independent game company.  Unfortunately, time and experience with the game has revealed various things that were "good ideas at the time but broken".  Also various game design decisions made along the way in Darkfall 1.0 led to very unhappy outcomes, including the poor player population.

    You can buy Darkfall 1.0 right now and play, however that game suffers (painfully in places) from the above issues which simply could not be resolved.  I know some of the detail of those issues, and no they couldn't simply be "worked around".   Darkfall Unholy Wars will be a totally new game, because it will be ground-up a new game.  A lot of things will be nearly the same as in Darkfall 1.0, mainly because players want them to be!   People genuinely love Darkfall, however the at times glaringly broken elements led to players leaving the game and essentially promising not to return until everything was fixed.  Guess what, Aventurine listened and is fixing things.  That is why we can't wait to play this game - not because it will be so different in design to the original Darkfall 1.0, but that it has the promise of actually working the way Darkfall 1.0 was always intended to, but never did.

    Also, our understanding is that if you do buy Darkfall, you get the Darkfall: Unholy Wars game without paying for it again (http://www.darkfallonline.com/blog/?p=2102).  For current subscribers we understand it will be essentially a free upgrade to the new game, and while we will lose our old characters and start fresh, the community has actually wanted that for some time because the legacy of the dark days remains in the current world of Agon.

    Perhaps the best way to consider this is if you bought a game and played it, loved it, but stopped playing because you got frustrated at how buggy and broken it was.  Wouldn't you be excited too if the same company basically appologised to you, its customers, and said they were releasing a new version that is what it always should have been?  Especailly if they say p.s. we also acknowledge you bought that last version, we have not forgetten about that?   Darkfall players have that delight at seeing the chance all their hopes and dreams are about to come true, especailly as some of the things we have complained about for years are confirmed as being gone from Darkfall : Unholy Wars.  I geninely can't wait :)

    edit: ok so if you bought the first DF you get this one free, ok thats fine then. I thought they wanted their fanbase to pay for the game again

    Yup I bet that it makes a lot more sense now why we are so happy about things :)

    I'm going to oblige you just because I know that for some people it can be really, really hard to search the internet.

    Some of the more fundamental stuff:

    * New role/class system

    * New bank/bag system

    * Redone world, new locations, better graphics and animations

    * New UI

    * New combat system featuring crosshair wobble and momentum, restrictions on bunnyhopping etc

    If you think all of these changes are mere cosmetics, you obviously never played DF1.

    Want to read more? Hey, look what I found for you: a thread right here on these very boards that delve deeper:

    DFUW is not the same game.....

    Compare it to upgrading from BF2 to BF3.

    New better version, with ALOT of changes.
