Are People Still Playing? and Other Thoughts

EcnaliEcnali Member CommonPosts: 49

So, are people still playing this game? When I finally came to my senses and stopped playing -  (after leaving in January '12, and then paying to come back in April '12 or so, only to leave after two days - talk about wasting money!)  I knew that others really still enjoyed the game- people that I was actually in contact with!. I didn't understand them or why they liked it, but they did. I guess they really really liked huttball...really.

I have a confession to make...they say it's good for the soul - I must admit that  probably the main reason I couldn't bear SWTOR was that it wasn't SWG. - Yes, I admit it. I really miss crafting, housing, and well, just generally running around. SWTOR had nothing at all like it. nothing. I still get queasy thinking about crafting in SWTOR....

I swore that I would never pay for another SOE game...and I'm pretty down on EA and Lucas Arts now (for killing off SWG) and feel nothing but sadness for Bioware.

I won't be going back to SWTOR when its F2P.  I'm not dissing F2P  - I love LOTRO - I'm a Star Wars nerd, and Tolkien is a god! True, LOTRO's crafting and housing are...how to put this...well, it's nowhere near SWGs...or EVE's for that matter, but at least it's not as craptacular as SWTORs.  F2P really makes in-game economies sort of moot - but still, LOTRO is managed far far better than SWTOR.

Even though I swore I would never give SOE money again, it the back of my head...the seed of a thought has taken root...what if SOE actually makes EQII somewhat SWG like with crafting an housing? Is this thought even worth thinking? I've already been devastated by SOE once....could I handle it again?

I'd like to hear your musings on all these jumbled up things percolating in my head.

Miss you already!

I still play the game because Im still having fun, enjoying the stories, and having fun with my guildies. Do I like everything about the game..No. I take it for what it is. Very few games have had my attention like this one. I dont agree with many of the Op's points, but he/she is entiteld to thier thoughts and opinions.

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.
Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes

I quit playing for the same reason, no matter how I justify it, it just wasn't swg. I was done with swtor, beat it, had all the gear and bored to death. Nothing really for players to put together on their own. No real crafting, economy is rediculous, space combat was just horrific.

I didn't mind huttball however, till I made a mercenary(god that class is awful)

I quite cause of constant, complitly unjestefied(sometimes), what they called ballance patches. Devs had no idea what they wanted from classes and how they wanted them to perform.

I enjoyed it a lot at first wearing my Star Wars goggles but I felt it had diminishing returns. It is a marvellous test case that I hope serves as a warning. Gaming companies are starting to pay a HIGH price for playing it safe, looking for easy bucks through apeing previously successful models and not taking chances to do new things and bloody rightly so. What other way can we hope for a future where better games are made than through financially punishing developers who don't push that golden envelope I ask you?

This was the reason I quit originally.  The sweeping constant changes to classes was too much, and every patch, they'd utterly destroy something.

I am back to the game right now, starting over on a new server with a friend who was interested in playing.  The goals this time are simple.. co-op story playthrough, then move on.

It was a bag o' shite for many a year before it shut down. Hence no one played it even with the draw of the SW IP.

Yes people still play it. As for the rest of your blog, I'm sure it's really important and insightfull, good luck with sharing your special thoughts and feelings.

SWG was good, but not good enough to gain a measurable following even after many years and several different versions and expansions, it was niche like Eve online accounting.

I was so fired up to play this before it launched. But, when I got in game and saw the "cattle corral" style of getting around in the game, I was turned off immediately. I prefer open exploration and SWTOR offers none at all.

-This is an UNCONFIRMED Rumor from a pretty trusted source... Take it as you will.

I heard that $OE knew Lucas Arts was going to essentially "shut down" SWG approx a year before it was announced to (hopefully) get the galaxies vets to "migrate" to the new game. At this point the entire ideal behind EQNext was to provide many of the things which were most enjoyed by the SWG players- Including crafting/housing/sandbox elements BUT to "streamline" these features enough so they could be as "deep" or "casual" as one would prefer whist providing true game benefits to all who partake.

-In other words, EQNext is going to be very much like SWG but with additional "themepark" type activities and not quite so complex as the early days. In leui of "planets" there will be "Continents" with the need for Player Owned Ships to transport you across the sea (not "fast travel")-

Anyhow, this is what I have heard- Could be waaaay incorrect but I do not think so since I personally heard about Galaxies being shut down LONG before it was announced and that came true.

-I also heard (unfortunatley) that EQNext is going to be have a "multi-level subscription " with cash Shop and Free to Play being immediatly implemented and much of the very cool "fluff" and "housing items" (including certain Home plans and amenities) will be cash shop only.

-So, while I am exited to see what comes out of this- I am also seeing a huge cash grab game... Time will tell.

Some rumores of SWG's demise were floating around early on.  Whether it was from a source, or speculation based on a possible outcome is unknown (?).  Lucas/BioWare/EA felt they had a real gem with SWTOR, one that would "more than compete with WoW."  Which was silly, because that should not have been their target audience.

EverQuest 1 tried to be more WoW like too, sometime after WoW was released.  Streamlining everything, creating more instant action, less downtime, etc.  The way I saw it, those changes were trying to keep players from switching.

EQ2 never became overly popular, and their segregation of F2P/P2P people early on was (IMO) a big blunder.  Other mistakes were made along the way .. but hopefully SOE will use all their years of experience in MMORPG's to learn from their mistakes.

F2P with cashshop works best when implemented that way during development, so thats a plus right there for EQNext (although not sci-fi).  On the other hand, SWTOR was designed to be P2P and shoehorning it into a F2P/P2P crossover model is ugly.

And, yes, I also hope SOE won't do a cash grab.

I certainly understand your feelings of Burnout, it is tough for me to play a mmo for longer than 3 months without getting bored.  I think one thing led you astray, Most people who like Tor  like it for its Story, Quests, Production value and some like it for its PvP.  Most do not play Tor for its crafting, or housing. those things are certainly serviceable along with the space game but they do not stand out. I think if Tor could add an excellent space game and open the World up a bit it would be fantastic

I understand you, trust me. I had a great time in SWG and EQ2 as well. So the idea of EQ Next sounds good. I never had this anti-SOE feeling though. All MMO companies make mistakes. I judge a game as it is.

I miss the same things from SWG. I miss having an Entertainer alt, and Creature Handling, god I loved that. Sigh.

So, no, I am most likely not going back to SWTOR either. I played 2 max level, 1 almost max, and that is as much as I wanted to see in SWTOR.

I assume he meant EQ3 aka EQ Next, which is presumed to be sandbox, not EQ2.

    I'm still playing this game.

I't only a matter o fun and having great time online.

My server has lot of people in the prime time (and not only, yesterday i did karrag's palace via group finder at 2 o'clock in the morning),i'm in a good and healty Guild and from monday to friday we  raid in operations or we go for pvp.

I have to equip  my companions(i have to do amost all companion's quests line),unlock a lot of mounts and other things like this so why should i leave?

i'm having a good time in the game and i'm going to roll for a judgernought shortly.

This game has the best  questing ever and every class has a unique story line and now  i can see a lot of people is coming back and not waiting for the F2P.

Once you realize that EA isn't going to give you new content, and their patches are entirely bug fixes, you might feel strangely different.

If you start to feel Dizzy, don't be alarmed, it's normal.  It's how SW fans feel when they are turned upside down.  This happens once exposed to EA for too long. EA Owns BioWare, who owns SWTOR.
