All Star Wars music composed by JW, which is of course immortal:
SWTOR music > GW2 music
Jeremy Soule is the most overpaid and overrated video game music composer out there.
^
fixed that for ya
Very mature as usual.
GW2's music is better than SWTOR's to me based on the fact that most of it is original, and not plucked from a movie series and edited. In fact, when I was playing SWTOR, I just turned the music off because it was like an old radio station playing in the background.
John Williams made music for the Star Wars movies, not SWTOR. I don't even know how it counts as game music.
Any original music for SWTOR was still beaten by WoW and AOC.
gw2 and swtor i find have good soundtracks and i like both music wise.
but it seems the scandavians have a talent for soundtracks, CCP and Funcom do the best music in my opinion. If I had to pick one game music wise it would be TSW, though its a hard choice between that and aoc or eve.
undoubtedly the worst big mmo music wise was Warhammer, there was hardly any in it, and what there was didnt fit the game, it would have suited a more high fantasy world like WOW, EQ or GW, you know bombastic and heroic sounding music. WAR needed a soundtrack appropriate to a low fantasy game, like AOC had.
Glad to see so many people here like AoC music as much as me.
Music is somewhat overlooked, and can sometimes make or break a gameplay experience.
I remember really liking Warhammer, but couldn't stand the music. It sounded like someone was banging pots and pans together in the backround, and it was that same music for almost every zone. It was so bad that I didn't even want to log in after awhile.
I never was a huge fan of Star Wars music and I didn't find it all the better in the MMO either, I never really remember the sound effects in many MMOs, I know FF11 had some nice soundtracks and Aion as well and as always i'm still a fan of TERAs battle music although most of the other music is lackluster.
Most of TERAs boss battles were DPS races(kill boss before x amount of time or else your party would wipe) and these really made them very intense, I hold TERAs battle music close to my heart lol.
Baraka and Aman race themes were pretty good too, but all the ambient and field music was lackluster in the game to me.
I thought Conan's soundtrack was also fantastic but it was very short. There were a number of exceptional pieces on it, but hearing the exact same 40-second piece of music in Conall Valley every 5 minutes got annoying. SW:TOR has *4 hours* of music in the game. Some of it will be terrible, particularly the cantina music on the fleet that's so, so annoying after you hear it 5000 times.
The sheer volume of music does mean that a lot of it ends up as ambient fuzzle (yay for partially made up words) but there are real gems hidden in there.
Lotro as a whole I think had/has a wonderful soundtrack with many memorable pieces, the whole Mines of Moria soundtrack for example is fantastic, "Hollin's Gate" being a particular favourite. Have not had to the opportunity to listen to the RoR expansion (or Isengard for that matter), not having bought that particular expansion, but I'm sure it's fabulous, despite whatever problems and issues the game itself is currently facing.
Come to think of it, most mmo's seem to come with good soundtracks, can't think of anyone that's not actually good and worth listenting to
as much as i liked the games music and loved loved the old school movies ost's, it is Age of Conan that holds the title of best mmo soundtrack ever, with Eve Online being the runner-up,,,
obviously a personall opinnion
Games previously played: AO, AoC, Aion, AoW, Eve, SWTor, WaR, STO, TSW, DCUO, FE, BP, ProjectEntropia, FootballSuperstars!

I don't remember any stand out music in AoC. As you say, it's all personal preference I guess. AoC could never compete with Basil Poledouris and his score for the first Conan movie anyway.
SWTOR has the benefit of piggybacking great John Williams scores. WOW has some great music at times. LOTRO is pretty boring in the score department. But again, it has no chance to stand against the LOTR film score.
Some great music in games these days. Personally I think Final Fantasy IV had the best music, they even did some concerts with actual orchestras playing it. Music in Lotro is darn good too. So was the free music given away from torchlight II was very good. SWTOR music was excellent, but so are many others.
I dunno, the AoC song you linked didn't have any memorable parts to it. It was dreamy, It got louder towards the end.
AoC songs don't really hold any emotion, or thoughts. (Sorry) They didn't have themes to make the mind wander in intrigue. They were just ... songs.
Now, the original theme from Conan movies (Barbarian & Destroyer) had humungous music qualities. The soundtrack was brilliant. I own the soundtrack. AoC? meh.
The Soundtrack from the 80's Conan movies are worth knowing.
It had problems when it was released, and it still has problems to this day. It did carry to the genre a great story telling mechanism, as well as a defined graphics standard (stuff gets to full resolution when you get close, instead of blurry).
It also carried with it a monster of a soundtrack package.
5.5 hours of ORIGINAL music in SWTOR + KOTOR + Original John Williams.
Regardless of how I feel for this game in it's current state, or how anyone else feels, SWTOR set a new level of music and songs. I simply have not yet even seen a game even compare.
Examples (includes actual music in their entirity):
This is a tiny amount of the music included. I can't possibly link every song or it would spam everyone to hell.
This game will go down in history as being the biggest sound & music game in history (thus far). Some games have nice music too (hey I like other games music) ... but can they do 5.5 hours of original music for 1 game?

i have never played an mmo soley for the music. never.
i didn't find anything particularly great about SWTOR's music. i thought AoC had probably the best music of any mmo i've ever tried.

The WoW soundtracks are incredible and I love them, but yeah, SWTOR's is unmatched. There's actually a review of it over here: http://tracksounds.com/reviews/star_wars_old_republic_mark_griskey.htm
I hope they get the chance to create more music for the game in future years.

Honestly, the music in TOR is a miss.
Not only most of the time it does not fits the planet/environement but also it seldom fits a SW setting at all.
Remove the SW name on in the titles, have people listen to the music and ask them what IP they are from.
It's the exact same thing as the gear art in the game.
Like many other posters have noted ,and I am glad to see that the music is remembered as it was great , that
AoC's sountrack is regarded by many as the best soundtrack score for a mmorpg.
Honestly it put any other's I've played to shame.
EQ's oringinal midi intro still holds most nostalgic tune though.
I enjoyed the music in SWTOR, but Age of Conan was the MMO that really blew me away when it came to the soundtrack.
The Eiglophian Mountains track, in particular, is a favorite of mine. http://youtu.be/kQxOTMF0NMY
Totally agree, AoC music was great as was neverwinter one too

Recognize the voice? Yep sounds like Penny Arcade's Extra Credits.
Yeah? and Star Wars Galaxies had the best music of any MMORPG before it was shut down.
