I played a warrior and didn't enjoy combat at all. The dungeons got sooo repetative. I was hoping the game would eventually open up, but it never did. That is probably my fault for assuming it was more an open world like many other MMOs. The permadeath thing is more of an annoying idea to me personally. I never had an issue with it, but I don't like that I have to sacrafice items or pay real $$ to improve the chance of not losing my character.
The game is definitely not for me, but I hope it does well. Always good to see something different in the genre, even if I don't enjoy it haha.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Not a fan (because I wasn't even aware of its existence) of Wizardy series, so I don't really know if it's "in line" with other games or not.
My take is: very interesting "idea", like all of it (including the random level up stats, the no regen, the no level up outside of inns and stuff like that, the "forced grouping or you suck") it's fantastic for me.
The technical realization is in line with a browser title using some dated java-coded engine (not some fancy last incarnation of Unity). There are games that are 10 years old, and they move/feel/look much better.
A shame, really - if it wasnt that sluggish/clunkish, limited color palette, overdose of bloom in an attempt to make it look better than a Playstation1 game.. I would be so in love with this.
I played worse-looking games, I'm almost 36 and I started with a pong clone back in the day.. I'm so sorry I find it so difficult to accept this sub-par technical realization.
Now take this game, reskin it with TERA (or take TERA, and mod it to have Wizardry Online rules) and I would so be in love with MMOs again..
Sometimes, especially with MMOs, I get the feeling that somewhere out there is a shop that has some massive bulk sale on brown pixels and the devs have a running tab there.

I'm somewhat confused, do you like to brown or do you not? I usually try to get some brown or grey mixed into my characters...
guildmates and I are still loving it! 3 WEEKS STRONG!
this is not your cookie cutter easy mode mmorpg. it's hard. and if you play it criminal (red) like we are, it's even harder. the more difficult, the more I enjoy it. Of course I am a grown ass man though who gave up on wow clones years ago lol
This does not look like a game that will be popular with the "average" mmo gamer. It looks like an actual old school RPG, but with other people in the same world. I would probably find this boring...but I can see how it would appeal to someone who is nostalgic for an old school RPG.
Anyway, the point is the video, not my comments.
** edit ** The graphics are drab, but they don't look that bad. It looks like these guys focused on game play, not graphics, so if you're looking for RPG game play, this game seems to have it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
With the exception of the music, the quality is very low overall. Not something you would expect from this century.
Wizardry Online is a dungeon crawler at its core. The game mechanics can be interesting to some people, but I found them just outdated.
For example, the mechanics don't have a modern flagging system. You directly turn PK just by 'hitting' someone. I can see it turning a ffa with everybody being PK at higher levels.
Originally posted by bloodaxes Don't mind the graphic whores for them graphics mean everything that's why modern games keep on getting shorter to satisfy these people's needs..
The graphics are the least of this game's troubles.
I actually LIKE old-school games (I still play EQ1 now and again) so gameplay means more to me than graphics. That said, the gameplay in Wizardry Online is just... bad. For a game only released last year in Japan I can't believe how little they have made of this game. It has below-par (not "old school") graphics, a frankly primitive combat system, uninspired and overly-verbose NPC dialogue, lacklustre sound effects and the overall pace of the game itself is so plodding! The simplest of conversations with an NPC takes an AGE the way the text sloooowly appears in the window and the there are too many pointless cutscenes.
I really like the idea of the Karma system when you die and the PvP/Criminal system is also good (something I've been waiting a long time for in a fantasy MMO) - it's just a shame they are both featured in such a poorly-implemented game. Honestly, with dual- and quad-core systems using dual SLI graphics cards being so common these days they should really have made something new and fresh for this game. Instead of producing a game for the 21st Century they under-achieved so badly the game looks - and plays - like it was designed back in the 90's... and not in a good way.

felt like i was playing a game from the 90's

Feel free to read my little preview from the beta.

I kinda like it, but im old... old old and old.
Wow, the 90s? Really?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I actually got what he meant, and i kinda agree.
But i see that as a GOOD thing.
Are you replying to me? Hard to tell. but, I havent been in the beta, so I have no idea what he meant. That's kind of why I'm reading this thread.

Yeah i was.
To me, the game feels oldschool... like the good old Wizards & Warriors, Might & Magic... (Sort of...)
Mmo Dungeon crawler... with a PvP twist.
Here's my take on the Criminal System and PKing
