darkfall unholy wars -- your military experience will actually come to use

Although df is a good shout too.
Not yet, release was meant to be a couple of days ago but they delayed and now you have to pre-order to beta it. No idea when release will be now but i wouldn't expect it before the end of Jan/Feb.
If you don't mind the transition to scifi/space then Eve is something you'd probably like in the MMOverse, for a single player sandbox of the same type i'd recommend X3:Terran conflict (usually only a few £'s in the Steam/other site's xmas sales).
You can pre order it atm.

i for once am not impressed with DARKFALL AT ALL. no good mmos to play to be honest. i was playing wizardry online pretty good potential but its fully instanced and no support and its bout to go live with a cash shop and no real patches since CBt....once again SOE sucking the life out of games. im this close to make a pledge to never play another soe game ever again. whos with me.
so for now while mmo are killed off i play War thunder and planetside 2...but i long for so much more in a game...and nice people for once in game.
Try EVE online. I'd personally avoid DFUW, its the current hype train and in all likliehood it will be a decent game that will retain a small-moderate community but not live up to the massive amount of hype its getting. At least with EVE Online, you know what you are getting - plenty of ruthless PVP, an actual presistent world to be a part of, and you can be whatever you want (pirate, arms dealer, drug dealer, explorer, inventor, industrialist, politician, its endless). Of course, you have to like sci-fi and not mind spaceships. I avoided EVE because of the spaceships but just tried the trial and it is growing on me.
Alternatively, if you must have fantasy, I'd keep my eyes peeled for Neverwinter (since you mentioned NWN) and maybe Age of Wushu, which has the potential of being another hype train wreck but at least it's F2P.

If you don't mind a learning curve and are willing to take the time to learn space combat, then EVE is the obvious choice. CCP is solid and they've proven themselves over the years. If you want to be on the ground fighting, I would recommend getting into a good guild and join SOE's Planetside 2. (I know, some of you will faint with me saying something positive about SOE.) If you don't mind old school, Ultima Online is still going strong. Saying all that, I can not recommend Dark Fall Unholy Wars to anyone. There was so much wrong with the Darkfall Online, Aventurine gave up on their own game opting to Launch Darkfall 2.0 instead of fixing and putting out an expansion for DFO.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
You consider yourself a mature gamer.
Yet you probably started the most immature and childish topic possible. Please explain to me how HELP !!!!!!! Is in anyway mature.
Also checkout Darkfall.
This is really what drove me to gave the game a try and I am glad I did. I am sick of all of these devs reversing their design philosophoes or manifestos just to bring in a crowd their game was never meant to entertain. CCP has stayed very true, and despite the grumbling I hear about highsec, clearly people are mostly happy with it.

I didn't play df, but dfuw sounds like the sort of game I would like too.
All 3 are aimed more at pvpers, which is the ops priority. And should give better pvp fun than your typical pve orientated mmo with token pvp (90% of mmos)
Do yourself a favor, don't buy it until a month after release. After the initial honeymoon phase is over, people will actually start griping about whats wrong with the game. If it still intrigues you, get it.
Usually I am a huge proponent of trying every game out that you can, you never know when you will find your new MMO home, but after GW2 I have learned to avoid the ridiculously hyped up games. They never end up being everything they are supposed to be, and then even if they are massively successful, they just end up changing the few qualities that people liked about them (such as ascended gear in GW2, which was a weird thing for me because I wanted meaningful progression, but that gear didn't cut it for me).
I hear a lot of DF veterans say that Darkfall isn't so much a sandbox MMO experience as it is just a FFA full loot experience. Apparently many of the sandbox features of the game are very underdeveloped and serve as more of a distraction than anything. But, I never played, so I am just repeating what I hear. I could point out that if Darkfall was the messiah, why did the original do so poorly? Granted, it did better than many other MMOs that flop, but it hardly did well. Why should anyone assume this time will be any different?
Also to the poster who mentioned Perpetuum - I secrely love that game and wish more people would play it. I am hoping that between Steam Greenlight and the growing popularity of similar games (EVE) that it will get a somewhat larger playerbase.

I'm telling you, if this game was by BioWare, Mythic, SOE, Turbine, or Blizzard (and a host of others, I would have already purchased it. Here is the key. DFUW was suppose to be an expansion to Darkfall Online. The very reason why I won't buy is because Aventurine knows they did so bad with the way they did DFO, they gave up on their own game. They scrapped it and made an expansion into a new game from the gound up because they knew their entire game sucked! I won't deny it, I have a long documented dislike of Aventurine. Saying that, every die hard supporter that heard their dev explain why DFO was closing knows I speak the truth.

I would play planetside 2 for now as its free.
Then get darkfall uw a couple of weeks after release.
They are different, the 1st being a pure pvp rvr game, the second being a ffa pvp sandbox with pve elements.
Both have twitch first person combat and territorial / seige warfare and are non instanced all open world.
I wouldn't. I was told about this game like 2 weeks ago and during the weeks waiting I was watching Darkfall 1.0. I was getting very excited and preordered it even after the "We'll delay the game on launch and blame it on something we knew about for weeks and lie." After playing for 5 minutes, being stuck in a giant cluster ****, crashing, and not being able to get on I am starting to change my mind. From what I saw (Mainly in customization. Which has some how managed to be worse than the first) I am unimpressed and considering returning the game. I'm not sure how the gameplay is itself, but here is what I can tell you that has turned me off:
1. The God awful customer service.
2. The God awful community who not only accepts the awful service, but insults anyone for trying to help AV with their communication problems. Which are horrible. They delayed the game on the date it was set to launch like 2 hours before it launched.
3. Customization. Every race looks like a human.
With that being said I've heard the gameplay is supposed to be great so I am going to try and wait to play the game, but I seriously doubt the gameplay could be that good to keep me playing. Community, Customization, and Support are three of the most important things in an MMO. Topped by Gameplay, but the gamepla yhas to be pretty god damn amazing to top how awful the other three are.
