PlanetSide 2 Creative Director Matt Higby has written a new post on the official site that gives players a good look at what's incoming to the MMOFPS with the January 30th update. In addition, Higby announced that the team is refreshed and ready to "open up the afterburners and aim for the stars" in 2013.
General performance increases, particularly for lower end GPUs
Experience (XP) system enhancements:
Dynamic XP system for player kills, players who have more kills on their current life are worth more XP. Freshly spawned players will be worth a fraction of the current kill reward.
Partial damage XP for dealing damage to vehicles that you don't end up killing
Population XP / Resource bonus moved over to continent population instead of global
Better display of XP sources for things like defensive bonuses & population bonuses
Rebalancing of XP rewards to help support tasks
Server transfer token available in Depot
UI changes to emphasize score per minute as a primary metric of player comparison
Sortable columns on outfit management & addition of "last online" column
New weapon type for all empires: SMG
There is a lot more to read, so head to the PlanetSide 2 forum for more.

Oh man. Here I was hoping they'd make it an MMO with this update.
Oh well.
Off topic: what's the difference between Battlefield 3 and Planetside 2?
A) Map cycling.

I hope they do something soon about the monotony. I'm getting tired of defending the crown every day. Also getting sad over the amount of cert points earned right now. I get about 50 an hour so it takes me 20 hours of game play to unlock a weapon. After that, it takes another several hours to unlock the site and other accessories. If I play 2 hours a day (everyday) it takes me 2 weeks to earn a weapon and some unlocks. That means 2 months to unlock one new weapon for each of the 4 classes. Then I can start on vehicle unlocks and maybe in 6 months I can actually work on class unlocks.
It used ot be fun but I'm getting bored earning cert points lately.

Agree 100%
I play it because it is fun. Certs are just a bonus to me, which gives me more options on how to play an already fun game.
I am a PS1 vet and I am enjoying the game quite a bit. That doesn't mean I don't want them to keep making improvements, but I am happy thus far.
The game requires time or money. It is your choice. Granted if you can afford both you will unlock things at a faster pace. I don't blame them for making take at least a decent amount of time to unlock things if you have put absolutely no money in.
Good start on the changes,
many more to come.
As Beanpuie said, it's definitely a good start on changes.
Like the little MMOFPS that could, it's gettin' there. Can't wait to see how this game evolves in the next 6 or so months.
I used to have little hope for SOE titles after their past consistant eff ups, but the way that they have been handling PS2 has given me newfound optimism, even if the changes do come at a seemingly snails pace.
at this point, im a rich man seeing the many people that were around Ps1, yet easily forget how even PS1 started bare bones without many of the goodies that later followed in the games life cycle, in addition of the skeleton crew that slapped crap together with the SWG/EQ scraps that dribbled down their way.
people who dislike the game due to the meta game have valid reasons not to play or play anymore, its not the planetside that they remember, but at the same time, i would at least encourage them to stay on the sidelines and watch the first 6 months of the games development cycle before writing the game off so quickly.
1 tenth of PS1 indeed, im very sure we will see another 1 tenth and whatever else within those 6 months.
How is it not an MMO i dont get it?
Thousands of people playing on the same server in the same zone.. that sounds massive and multiplayer and online..
BF3 is a multiplayer fps game where 64 players can play togeather on a dedicated server.. its nothing like an mmo..
They really need to allow a cert point reset. Cert do not come that fast and for casual players, to have them sitting in unused abilities is annoying. If they don't want to allow a cert point reset they should either increase the rate at which cert points are gained or allow unlocking of the same benefit across multiple items. If I buy a scope for gun A, and gun B uses it as well, I should get to use it on both, not have to unlock it again multiple times over for every gun...
The same for vehicle weapons. If vehicle A uses the fury grenade launcher for instance, by purchasing it with cert points or station cash I should unlock it for vehicle B that uses the same damn weapon. I understand people need things to work toward but sheesh. This is worse than grinding AA in eq1. On top of that if you want to try out another faction, you need to unlock everything all over again.
They say they are focused on listening to player feedback but I have yet to have a survey pop up in game or through email. IIRC both Trion and HiRez send out surveys in game and email and I think it is the best way to get an average on feedback. Not just by following the noise on official forums.
I am definitely loving the game. I think that part of that comes from the server i chose.
Waterson is definitely an above average server when it comes to finding worthy opponents that are as interested in making the game interesting as you are.
Overall i think a lot of the things that many people are calling major issues become less of an issue if you are getting into awesome fights every night like i do.
I definitely think that there are a lot of things that are improvements over PS1 and many of the features that i loved in PS1 are already announced and on the way for PS2. Overall i think this is going to be a very long lasting game. I definitely plan to keep playing it.
Now if they'd only add an anti-cheat system the game would be fun to play again.
Well...
Probably not, but it would definately be a step in the right direction. I miss PS1. This game doesn't even hold a flickering candle to it...
