"skeptics are quick to point out that every F2P MMO is an abysmal failure (they think)."

No.  Charging for basic UI items like skill bars are an abysmal failure...........but I won't mention any games.

As a lifetime member of STO I can tell you all now there's nothing to worry about. People were all whining and crying about how terrible STO was at launch but then PW came along and people whined even louder. NONE of the claims these whiners yelled in the forums were true about STO/PW combining forces. STO is more balanced and is not a money hog for everything like I've found GW2 post Nov 15th to be, They actually allow you to get the best gear without spending a dime of RL money in the store. Sure you have to spend a couple of weeks gathering dilithium but it's nothing like the 16 months of dailies you have to do to get the best gear in GW2 right now.

I'd suggest you people do more homework before complaining.

Yes having a different viewpoint than yours is whining and crying.

Looks like there has been a bit of quiet editing.

Score one for budget pricing. No really. Two hundred dollars, even if the game only lasted two years, is a helluva price.

Really not an adequate change, because it still sort of implies, especially with the erroneous Lifetime reference, that NWO has a sub.  Also the correction should be public, not a quiet ninja edit.

This article is thick with the stench of hype. I would really like to believe Cryptic is going to make something special here , I really do but their past is just so bad how could anyone believe ? Just saying record speaks louder than words.

Again, however, the specter of monetization hangs over the Foundry as well. Will builders need or want to purchase additional item sets or creation abilities to tell these stories? Will Cryptic and PWE somehow want to monetize the best of the mods created by allowing builders to charge a fee for use and taking a percentage of each sale? It remains unclear but the hope is that this won’t happen or that, if it does, it’s a reasonable approach. Most of us wouldn’t begrudge a stellar builder a few bucks off his or her creation!

Just want to point out that Jack Emmert himself pointed out Cryptic will never charge for content including Foundry content.  So I normally take the head of a company at his word.  I do not think they will monetize the mods either but they do allow for users of the content to give a "tip" to designers to show support.  Plus Foundry modders get other incentives from Cryptic themselves for producing good content so no need for them to monetize it.

As for the rest of the article, NWO is the #1 MMO I am most hyped for and I am not ashamed to say I purchased the $200 foudners pack this morning when it went on sale because it has items I want and guarentess me as early access as possible.  Everthing the game is conveying is all the things I look forward to the most in an MMO.  Mainly dungeon running, Action Combat and near unlimted themepark content in the form of a robust UGC (User-Generated-Content).

So for those of you that are holding your breath in anticipation of the invite (turning blue here Cryptic/PWE save a fellow) I've compiled a list of gameplay videos to take the edge off I apologize if there are duplicates however my eyes started to cross after awhile Also some of these are interviews with gameplay. The foundry in STO, back when the game was still P2P and had no restrictions, was amazing for an MMO.  Sure it's not NWN toolset good, but, given that eveything has to be done serverside(to avoid hacking/manipulating the game, items, etc) it was good.  Many people do not realize that the foundy in STO was not even their full fledged foundry that Neverwinter will have, as it was stated that it was more of a testbed of the foundry intself, and had a more limited approach.  Yet, I saw some amazing missions written with that.  If you play a game for fun, well written stories, I am sure Neverwinter will appeal, because the amount of qaulity player driven content is astounding.  Ya, there is a lot of crap too, and even though STO had a rating system, the brave had to wade through the crap missions in order to find the good ones, rate them, and let the less brave just pick and choose from the better rated missions.

I am worried however about PWE and their notorious money laundrying (i mean P2P) scheme.  They are a trash company that will put monetary gain FAR above their own players, far more then most other companies will. (Making money is one thing, nickel and diming and ripping players off is just greedy trash BS)

Let's hope the fact Neverwinter is catering more towards a western audience due to it's IP and foundry tools, tempers the approach of their typical blatant P2W mentality.

My thought is that PW will not be able to resist putting game changing things in the item shop.  Every other game they own has them.  Hopefully I will be wrong here.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

WTH, where did you get your information that you have to pay to use the Foundry.

The only limitation is your character must be level 15 before you can unlock the Foundry system.

My 16 year old nephew could have written a more accurate article than this person!

That being said. I have to agree with many other posters here, I am very catious about PW and Cryptic attempting to cash in on beta hype. If this was a proper beta it would be enough to get free workers to help make the game better. NO beta should have a price to play on it! You are helping the developer make the game better before launch. This stinks to high heaven and I will not give them my cash until I see some game play results.

They have had long enough with this game with little evidence to the public of any results. They have pushed back their launch date numerous times. If it was a developer with a better track record with their games people could be more patient, but this is Cryptic and PW.

In D&D I do not recall cute vanity pets. I am dissapointed to see WoWesc crap in a D&D world!!!!! NO TO VANITY PETS. This is Forgotten Realms not cartoon time with Blizzard.

I am pretty sure that's about the most cheeseball trailer I've ever seen for a game.

The narrator really made me feel they were talking about their local pizza joint and not their company's core project.

Its not a problem that its not NWN from Bioware - the problem is: The game is not DnD

You can always argue that there need to be adjustments to make it an MMO - i agree on that - but this game will not feel like DnD and will not be as much fun as DnD. You'll see. ;)

Monetization is every companies right. The issue here is, as you stated, how its implemented and how the company behaves. Looking at Perfect World and Cryptic you know how there stuff works after running into their "traps" once.

The Foundry is a feature that sounds so cool but will just end up being worth nothing in the end and just be a footnote of the game. Its not like this is the first game that is implementing player driven content. Its just trying to be more userfriendly then the games before.

Look at your own article: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/36/view/reviews/load/46/Ryzom-Ring-Review.html

There is no evolution or revolution about the foundry - its just their try to slow down the issue of people running out of content. In STO there are a ton of player created stories, but people still complain about the content and what to really do (except grind 100% unimportant starbases and weapons which you don't need for any type of content as all content is supereasy no matter the difficulty you try it on). Quality endgame content to keep large groups of people occupied is nothing that will soon be managed by player driven content developers. Don't fool yourself in thinking that the foundry will somehow be able to change the mmo world or even make this game more of a success. I am in a disbelief.

I personally think that player driven content is not something you can box in missions. Its content you need to create for everyone to see, interact, live and take away. Player driven worlds are the things that will be the next big thing. Sandparks and Themeboxes will reign shortly until players will get a true themed sandbox which not only enables you to do what you want but also enjoy the game how you want it and empowers you to control the world in every diserable way.

EVE is promising in space. A great sandbox with a themed twist.

Archeage "might" be the first real deal in a fantasy setting we could enjoy.

Other then that... we'll have to actually wait and see what our small developers are able to push out into the wide world and what mechanics are that good and interesting for the big players to pick up and make a big AAA game.

Or Smedley makes a return and after learning (again) what they did wrong in games past (PS2 being the last one to have a huge flag of fail and success over its head)... "maybe" Everquest will save us from Questbased Themeparks and bring us a successfull Questbox.

We'll see. I love MMOs and will most likely play them til i die. As long as companies provide mie with platforms i might actually be allowed to enjoy my game time and not feel like a ripe orange ready to get juiced... or something such. ;)

They pretty much have to. Given that we are in the height of the IP wars, they REALLY do not want to get sued by some content owner or another.  Especially not these days.

got interested about the foundry system:

    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=185711

    This here:

Q: Is The Foundry a modding tool?

A: No. The goal of this tool set is to allow players to put their stories in the Star Trek universe using the same look, feel, and capabilities that Cryptic's own design team utilizes. So while there are a lot of features for creating content, players cannot import their own images, 3D models, or audio into the game.

When reading the paragraph of the article speaking about the foundry and the Aurora toolset. one of the big things that gave NWN many extra years in life was  the CEP, made by the players.

I looked over the Foundry FAQ several times, unfortunately I did not see the answer i was looking for in the FAQ.

for those who used the foundry system, here is my question

Number of Players:  How many players can the foundry hold, not just npc, but playable characters? you will have groups of RP communities and world building communities that will push the foundry to its limit and much more. there will no doubt be groups that would yearn to build worlds, if at least cities of their own for a good dozen or more people to run around in. 4 people of a party just to run around and fight is not enough, esspecially if the DM wants to create a story/event that would involve over a dozen people that seek to participate.

The question is geared towards RP and social versatility, though i understand that this game is not  Neverwinter Nights, but Neverwinter,  the name alone along with the world itself harbors many adventurous memories both in game when playing with others, and out of the game when creating worlds/stories and adventures with others.

    you cant fastfood player content.

  • Paizo_JimPaizo_Jim Member UncommonPosts: 12

The original Neverwinter Nights was actually one of the first MMOs, running on AOL where we got to pay hourly fees to play. Ah, those were the days.

When we were licensing out Neverwinter to Bioware, we were concerned that there might be some negativity over the new Neverwinter not being an MMO. Bioware put those fears to rest though.

We'll see how the next generation of Neverwinters fares. :-)

With the foundry, what is to stop a player from making an "XP Farm" adventure with asstons of magical items that are just there for the taking? Why has no one brought this issue up?
