Nemesis/Goon World; This One You'll Actually Like Playing

I don't know about you, but I personaly got sick and tierd of playing MMOGs. Every single one is the same game, same boring story base, then after awhile all the elite who spent the last month playing the game with out taking a break for sleep, food, shower, (I could go on), decide do run a killing spree on all the lower levels. WTF! If your that bored with the game 1) Start a new charecter, or 2) Don't play so damn fast to begin with.

Ok, i got sort of off the subject. The point of this post is because I stumbled apon this interview at WarCry. This new game seems like it is going to blow the pants off everything else. Nemesis, I believe, Has a gold mind on thier hands.

When we named Goon World: Organized Crime Online our "Whatever Year It Comes Out Game Of The Year", we thought nothing of it. Just showing the world a game that definitely needs to get made. But The Family took notice, gracing us with some concept art. "Thank you, Godfather," we murmured, posting it as graciously as we could manage. This week, I was drawn in deeper. A stylish older car pulled up beside me and a large gentleman in a nice fedora carrying a Tommy Gun implied it would be in my best interests if I joined him for a "chat"...

Justin J. Gaughan (JJ) - Business Founder/Director
Leif Holt - Lead 3D Designer
Chris Smith - Lead Developer

WarCry: Tell us about Nemesis Studios. Who are you guys and what’s your MMO and game design background?

JJ: Nemesis Studios Entertainment is a company created of gamers and of course developers. We started three years ago on our path to game development. The Goon World team consists of developers who have worked on major commercial titles such as Dark Ages of Camelot, Lord of the Rings Online, Dominus Online and many other high profile games.

WarCry: Details are sparse on the website. So, what is Goon World?

Chris: Goon World is a world of gangsters (goons), gunfights, twisted plots and feuding families. Players battle and quest for power as they grow their character and family bond. A new play-style is introduced to the player that allows a MMOG to play as a FPS in certain game play situations. Using the flexibility of the the TV3D engine we have been able to bring many features and game play options to the gamer that hasn’t been available anywhere until now.

Leif: Without spilling the beans on the extent of the game design, Goon World is our stylized take on the world of Prohibition-era Gangland. Drawing inspiration from classic tales of mafia and mayhem, we've been building a world with a unique visual style and a strong sense of humor. Our game is a playful tribute to history, as well as to the many highly entertaining gangster films we've enjoyed over the years. The game world itself is sort of an amalgam of different styles. We're aiming to create a highly social online environment where players can really express themselves in a setting torn by corruption, big money, right and wrong, friendships, betrayals, and the drive for control. Players will get to make a name for themselves in the role of their own custom "Goon" and really get a chance to make their character's story within the booming big cities and outskirts.

WarCry: Organized crime online? What kind of organized crime?

Leif: Well there's disorganized crime, and then there's crime that's more organized

JJ: Interesting question! Ask the Godfather, he would know before we would..

Chris: (puts on his Godfather hat) In the theme of “the Godfather” and other classic gangster movie and stories. We have molded Goon World to immerse the player in these settings and allow them to play them out in their own way. Players can opt to join one of many families to focus or organize his or her efforts to create mayhem in game. We have specific focus on authentic recreation of period environments, style, and general “off the cuff” fun aspects of doing what is aginst the law.

WarCry: As this is going to be an “organized crime” themed game, are you guys going to go with a more open EVE Online kind of game where stealing and piracy and such are part of the game or with a more “you CAN steal, but only in these certain approved areas” approach?

JJ: We have implemented a complex system in regards to "stealing" and with that said consider this question stolen, maybe we will return it back to you someday.

WarCry: Is it going to be more of a PvP game or a traditional-style MMORPG with a bunch of computer controlled mobs?

Leif: We'll make it clear that Goon World is not your traditional MMOG. However, both the classic mechanics of collaboration and teamwork, and player versus player competition are all key to our game play. We've all seen how fun PvP can be, especially when organized with friends and using collective strategies to take down a mob (or in our case, THE mob), enact revenge, or rumble with a rival clan. We want to bring that center stage in Goon World. We're developing a living breathing world of computer-controlled personalities and agendas. These will engage the player on their own terms, but also form the underlying setting and structure for the player-versus-player action to play out

WarCry: Why hasn't anyone created an organized crime MMO before?

JJ: I believe that the major reason nobody has successfully accomplished a game such as Goon World: Organized Crime Online before is within the question itself. It hasn't been done, thus there are no previous efforts to base game design off of which puts a lot of hard work and forced innovation on the developers creating it. It's very different from your every day Fantasy and Sci-fi style game.

Chris: I believe the reason nobody has made a mafia MMOG is because of the level of game play design difficulty in merging aspects of a fps and the role playing ideas behind MMOG's. Creating a rich game play experience for the player is not easily accomplished with this subject matter.

Leif: In recent years the market has been flooded by fantasy games populated by orcs and elves. Since the pioneering games (Everquest, Ultima Online) created the graphical MMOG market, the industry seems to have stayed with "what works". The Mafia setting is no doubts a genre that many people enjoy. But Mafia-themed action doesn't exactly connect with the same flow of epic swords and the grinding kills of thousands of mythical creatures. As much as we love sci-fi and fantasy, we feel its time to explore a different world , with a different style of game play. We'd toyed with the idea of a mafia
MMOG a lot over the past few years, and realized it was something that would just be really fun to do.

We at WarCry would like to thank the Goon World team for talking to us (trapped in car trunk in Jersey send help please) and providing us such cool art. While they're playing it close to the vest for now, no doubt fearing Ness and his men, I've been informed through reliable sources that the goons will let loose more information around Christmas. For now, you'll have to be satisfied by the "I ain't sayin' nothin'" coming from the official website.

    doesn't it?

GTA is like one of my all time fav. games. And to have a game of that type, only your actually part of the mob instead of their go-for, WOW!!!

After reading the article I went to the game list and noticed that, mmorpg.com is failing in its job to uphold the American Market MMO's.  Goon World is no where to be found.

WHY IS GOON WORLD MISISNG FROM THEIR "GAME LIST"?  Lets hope the Admins notice Goon World and place it where it should be, on the game list.

Being a large fan of the Godfather series Goon World is up there when it comes to anticipation.  As Nemesis Studios themselves have said, they're adding in a "FPS" First Person Shooter perspective.  As if you yourself were the enforcer taking care of...*cough*... business. ;)

I'll be keeping my eye on this one www.Nemesisstudios.com

Without exaggerating, Vandemar gets all excited when he has talked to me about this game.  He is a huge fan already.  So is Orson over at WarCry.  I bet they are both wearing fedoras by now.

It seems to be heavy in the late concept / early design phases, so I am sure we will hear a ton more about it.

This is the game that Justin Joseph, the co-founder of this site is working on is it not? I doubt mmorpg.com would simply not know about it. There's probably a reason for them not having it on the list yet.

Oh, this is pretty cool.  I didn't realize that the WarCry interview would make it's way over to mmorpg.com.   Thanks for the interest guys!   Hopefully some good constructive conversations will start up here on what users would like to see in the game and not see in the game?  That would be really swell as well!

    Hello LordMagnus,

Yes I'm guilty, this is Nemesis Studios Entertainments first project and we are really stoked on how well it's turning out.  But just to put something to rest, yes I am still the site co-founder of mmorpg.com and always will be because I was a big part in helping to create the site, but I also would like to state that I left MMORPG.COM due to personal reasons and I am no longer affiliated except by "creation" to this site at all.

The staff has changed majorly since my days here and I have moved on to do my own business and left Craig to handle this one.  The reason the game is not on the list is simply because we are not showing off much yet and mmorpg.com requires a little more knowledge of a game before they pop on their list.  Eventually you will see it on the list, but we are targeting bigger sites as well like warcry, gamespot, ign and gamespy.  We also have plans for G4 tv and several gaming magazines.

    Thanks :)

    Anyways..

Can't wait until this game is released. I've always wanted to play a mafia styled mmorpg and it looks like I will finally get to with this game. The art style fits into the game perfectly too in my opinion.

    Keep us updated.::::20::

    Hey guys,

I definitely won't be a stranger and I would be very gracious if you guys could stir up some discussion in terms of game play design and what you would like to see in Goon World, who knows maybe you will get some little bits of information out of me.

As always, thanks for the interest! :)

I started a new topic, What Would YOu Like To See In Goon World?. Hope it gets you some cool stuff

  • LiveWyreLiveWyre Member Posts: 27

Reading through the article Nemesis did with Warcry it states that Goon World is not your typical MMOG. Is there a chance that you could elaborate a little further on what that would mean.

    If you're willing to, since this is not a typical MMOG;

    - Will there be certain races to choose from or will it be more of a culture choice. Such as, sicilian, irish or the American mob?
    - Will the game be entirely PvP or have PvP elements like City of Heros/City of Villians or World of Warcraft. Or will it be more of an open Player attack such as in Eve Online.

That's what i've got stirring for now. ::::28::

Being the big fan of MMOGs I once was, I have a list of what would make the perfect game. A game worth any amount per month, a lot of you have your ideas and i'm shooting mine. Dont let me be the only one ::::39::

A game that hosts live events that shape the future story line. Picture this.
-- A group of 25 Italian Mobsters line the streets, 1 behind a car and 2 in the alleyway. Up comes the rival family toting 18 Russians, 3 in the car and 2 others watching the backs of the Italians waiting for the strike. All of this to take major business in the area.

Whichever side wins affects the story line for ALL in the game. Who could ask for more. It could mean better weapons, cooler hats, even better...cooler suits! ;)

    Whats on your list?

KillerTwinkie - That one guy who used to mod mmorpg.com's forums.

There will only be sexes to choose from.  This is more of a stylized American Mafia type deal game, such references could be "Dick Tracy", "Roger Rabbit" and things of that nature.  This a cartoon world with a gritty and gory atmosphere.

The game will not be entirely PvP, we will have elements for both the hardcore and casual gamer.

    Thanks, thats all for now!

I have to say this entire thread has triggerd my cynic alarm more than once.

If I am maligning you all then I apologise but this really does read and feel like a clever bit of stealth advertising.

Whatever - it has worked to a degree ::::39:: - I have put the link into my "Games in Progess" folder and will be keeping an eye on it ::::20::

Well, yes I suppose in some form that this is advertising.  But it's important to us here at N.S.E. to keep a close relationship with the fans of MMOG's aside that I am the co creator of this website so if I really wanted to advertise here I'm sure there would be no problems.

Although that is not the point of my posting on this thread, its not meant as "advertising" this is more of a "what would you like to see in the game? The devs would like to know" sort of deal, however we will begin advertising Goon World around Christmas and a lot more people will have their eyes on our upcoming title or at least we believe so!

I'm glad this caught your interest though, because that proves to me that Goon World is going to be a success.  Because more and more people keep becoming interested as they learn more about our game.
