General: The Rant - We the Giant Slayers

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In this week's Rant, Bill Murphy tackles the issues plaguing Maxis' SimCity, and whether or not we should be too hasty to ridicule the game and its developers. Drawing inspiration from other letdowns of recent memory (SWTOR, D3, Mass Effect), Bill says there might be reason to think before you troll.

Check it out on The Rant's video page.

    Disagree
D3 and sim city 5 deserve everything they get.

Swtor, well its just a bad game, bad games happen, but its not taking the piss out of paying customers like the first 2.

Me3 doesn't deserve yo be in the same category, some people got annoyed at its ending, that is all.

This article sums up the sim city debacle the best. It also makes good points about the "apologists", with their "freedom is slavery" take on it.

Any anger I feel toward devs and publishers when bad games or release problems occur is rooted in the hype machine. Interviews with developers about game mechanics, game features, opinions about how awesome the game is going to be being available months or years before anyone has played the game creates a monster made of anticipation. If the end product of years of hype and waiting is poor or unplayable it pisses me off.

If I buy a bad blender, I can haul it back to the store for a refund. With a bad game or poor release your money is gone and there is no recourse. They have your money, you have a turd. (Anyone want to buy a collectors edition of FFIV in mint condition?)

Maybe you will help some cautious person who didn't pre-order by spewing vitriol. We saps need to look out for each other.

I think ME3 be on same category together with DA2 is for the simple fact they made a worse game then the first one.

me3 even though the story was ok it let a hell lots of things out things told on me1 and me2 simple disapear on me3.

you can blame hype and all, but in the end with or without a huge hype we will blame for lower quality games, and lately devs are all for graphics then gameplay.

I remeber that fired dude from Swtor team telling us everything what was happening there, and what he told us did happen (the ultima broser game using ultima 2 map), saying the devs most favorite part was the Voices files, not the game, not the combat, not even graphics but the VA for the chars in game, and the result? we can see

so tell do we really need to defend devs or company for lame games like this? games lately are ahrd to find any gem before we could always find some now?... its like all devs are too afraid to do new things or are just crazy and lose the touch with what really is a game

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Shouldn't a site for gamers be defending gamers rights instead of siding with ea and activision/blizzard and their ridiculous drm?

These companies have expensive lawyers, they don't need games journalists batting in their corner.

Hey, if they want to treat us all like pirates we'll treat them all like corporate thieves out to rape our wallets and childhood memories.

    Now with 57.3% more flames!

And why would this site have to side with players? why they have to side with anyone? what Bill says he does so in his own personal capacity. I am pretty sure he is not speaking on behalf of entire mmorpg.com staff.

Come on, it is essentially still a single player game, but it of course has that always on DRM feature that everyone really dislikes.  It deserves every bit of negative publicily for that one feature alone.

Every time the servers are down you cannot play, which you have to admit is truely ridiculous.  I have tons of good single player games that do not need to connect to a server to play.

Trying to defend this game is like defend a scammer because that is basically exactly what these games are.

That we don't know since we haven't heard anything about the other staffers side therefore we must assume that mmorpg.com supports his views. Now, if there was a "anti-Rant" or another opinion piece that reflects on the other side of the coin we might think differently. But there isn't.
