Should CU have built in VOIP?

Originally I was agains the idea of WAR supporting VOIP, but as the years roll forward, I have come to the conclusion that VOIP should be integrated into client and not have to deal with third party client/server.  Looking to the years past, the most successful RVR groups were all using some flavor of VOIP.  Attempting to type " /group INC from behind" while running or in combat is a tad bit too difficult and time consuming when seconds count.

I don't know enough about the programming that goes into something like that.  Given all the quality third party providers of VOIP, why waste the time coding to allow for it in-game?  Would that also create additional lag in the game-world because the voice data is being transmitted through those servers rather than an independent server?

What are the reasons you want an in-game VOIP functionality?

only if you can very easily and rapidly identify annoying people and mute them.

Also, like the above poster said, why waste time on it when there are numerous other options that work just as well.  Maybe make it a post launch priority.

Personally, I would get annoyed of hearing all the good idea fairies and armchair generals.

It would be interesting as a stretch goal, or even as an expansion type 'free addon' later down the line, but I'd rather CSE focus on polished mechanics at release.

My name is Plastic-Metal and my name is an oxymoron.

I can see it as a convence factor for like pugs and stuff. but then again it only takes a minute to get information for a server and log into it.

Probably not worth the development time and cost. If they could have some way of interfacing CU with external VOIP programs so you didn't have to write down the login information, ALT-TAB, then type it in, that would be awesome though.

As others have said, I don't see it being worth the trouble with third party software doing it well and in some cases free.

Because it would (depending on flags/permission) allow you to automatically join a group or guild channel. No downloading a seperate VOIP client, no having to go begging for access or pay for a 3rd party server or trying to log in.  If you don't like it, turn the option off.  It's easier to get by without VOIP for PVE but RVR, the group that isn't in VOIP is going to have a really rough time of it vs groups that are in voice contact with each other.  Group (or Guild or BattleGroup or Alliance) leader would have management over that given channel.

Perhaps some of the open source P2P code can be used to cut down development time and effort.

APB: Reloaded uses Vivox and it seems to work fine. The option for voice would be just that, an option. I have no issues with supporting something like this. I use mumble and vivox while playing in APB, it is easy enough. People who don't want it just disable it.

Vivox also does voice for Second Life, EVE, and Combat Arms. I don't know how well it works for any of those though. I imagine it depends on developer implimentation.

I have always hated voip. I think a very interesting game mechanic would be a "silence" spell that rendered someone unable to communicate with their allies. In this day and age, that's just silly.

As to your question: no. While dedicated guilds will certainly use third-party voip, I would not want the game to promote it.

I miss the old days when you started to panic when you saw a group approaching your flank and scrambled to type out a "FG inc SW!" Call me crazy.

No, VOIP is tedious and never implemented well enough that people end up prefering that over TS/Mumble/Vent, etc.

Want a good/fast chat system? Look at what games like SMITE have done. Those are pretty ingenious and actually work.

Nothing says buzz kill more then "Jn vnt .yahdayhdayoo@fragkill FFppjjttrrmm HURRY."

For what ever it's worth I hate with a passion, vent, and teamspeak, and the people that DEMAND you join it. (I always picture some little runt jumping up and down furiously pumping his fists, Idk maybe Im weird)

I play games to relax, to forget about reality. I don't want to be freaking out writing down a bunch of gobbabdy gook and then alt tabbing trying to connect to some dumb ass server for a 20 second game session with some codknocker who's going to rage quit when he gets rolled.

In game VOIP is much better because i don't have to worry about it, and can listen to my music while I game with out having the stipulation of being in some 3rd party room, or lobby or what ever you call it.

Just my 2c I would like to see a ingame VOIP, so i don't have to use those god aweful 3rd party programs to play.

Whilst being able to communicate via voice is enormously helpful in co-ordinating an army, it's horribly distracting and completely unimmersive. It's hard to take a great Viking seriously when he sounds like a whiny schoolboy :)

How about some quick button commands that can be actually heard by the rvr group?

A set of rvr command buttons only available to the raid leader and his chosen deputies.. "Attack!"  "Retreat!"  "Hold!" etc...

No-one will see those commands if they appear in a busy  typed chat channel, but if they can be heard over the background noise, by an imposing, authoritative and above all authentic and believable voice, it won't break immersion and it might help organise us :)

No one uses ingame VOIP, Teamspeak severs are fine and work even when you're out of the game or get D/C from the game.  It's simply not practical to attached VOIP to a single game.

I am sure it will come as a shock to many that WoW has buit in VOIP and has had for many years now but no one uses it.

I disagree.  Planetside 2 uses its in game VOIP and it helps coordinate in large battles with non-guildmates.  Having an in game voip is not a bad thing in a large scale PvP game (which WoW is NOT).
