If im not mistaken each class can only use one type of weapon like warriors can only use two handed axes only? Because even in final fantasy 11 each class could use different types of weapons. And there are no great swords either? Because I wanted to be a warrior with greatsword.

Your weapon defines your class, so switching weapon type switches your class.
You're correct that there are no two-handed swords yet, but it's likely they will be implemented later on for a new class (possibly Samurai depending on if they differentiate between swords and katanas).
Classes = the weapon you use basically.
Personally, i find this a HUGE step down from FF11 though thats what they decided, butcher one of the best class systems in an MMo with a rather lame system in its place.
Yeah, if you can't tell its a rather upsetting thing for me and one of the things I'd put up front if I made a top 3 list of 'why I have little desire to play FF14 even after the revamp'.
Yeah it was a step back from what XI had, but it was one of Tanaka's crazy design decisions... when he was producing the game he basically did loads of stuff just for the sake of being different without a care for what was actually more fun. Yoshi P has done a lot to fix and improve the game following the mess Tanaka made of it but I guess the 'weapon = class' thing was too fundamental to change.
Personally it's not a big deal to me but I could understand why some find it a little restrictive. There will be other weapons and classes down the road though, Yoshi P has already said as much and we're already getting the summoner.
How so? If you want to be a War Equip a G.Axe then if you want to be a Gld equip a sword maybe 3 hours later equip a bow and be a Archer i like the system better then XIs because i dont have to go to my Mog house to change jobs i can job change on the field . I am sure later they will add different weapons to classes like XI. G.Swords , Katanas , Sai , Scythes that sort of thing even XI did not have different weapons for classes at launch so wait and see

I don't know, maybe because I enjoy having some class identity? Maybe I like the style for a certain class but want to use my own preferred weapon type? Maybe I like having some variety and ways to dfferentiate myself from others of the same class? There are plenty of reasons for why this sytem is, in my opinion, inherently flawed, but for some reason, it seems to be becoming the norm (with GW2, TERA, TSW, etc). Having to go to a mog house to change to a different class was nothing but a minor inconvenience at worst, and it was worth it to actually feel like I was attached to my actual class, versus being able to switch to whatever I want, whenever I want and thus feeling like my class means nothing. I mean, why even have classes at all with this kind of system? They may as well just say, "Well, the spear weapon does this and is effective in these situations, the sword specializes in this or that, etc."
Edit: for clarification
Tera you can only be what you are unless you re roll a new chr. ( i hate tera it is hands down to simple of a game no challenge i can solo Kumas at Lv26 sorc ) I understnd where your comming from . But still i like how it is and you can take most any ability from one job and add it to your curent job. The good thing i like about it also is say your in EG and you got your LS at a Loaction and say your WHM is not online but your friends monk has Whm leveled so instead of waiting for him to warp to his mog then travel back all he has to do is switch his weapon . Granted ofcorse he has to have the weapon and gear in his Inv. In V1 i liked it because just like in XI your one Chr can be anything so you have more of an attachment to it. Like in "real" life. Example you go to a park and bring a basketball , a football , and a bat and ball .Pickig up a basketball makes you a basketball player , picking up a football later makes you a football player but you yourself did not change at all and you did not have to go home to get the football

Yeah, I understand that some like the more "classless", swap-out-anything-anywhere approach, but I'm really not one of those people. I've always felt that a little restriction is a good thing, otherwise you get a game that feels homogenized. I still plan on trying the game, as I'll get a free 30 days on my account, but I'm not sure I'll really be able to get into it. It might seem petty to some, but not being able to have at least a few weapon options per class, is just about a deal breaker for me. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
I think it would have been better if they had opted for a way to switch the classes themselves (ie. like a telepathic link to a moogle or something), therefore, you'd still be able to switch at a moments notice, but each class could still use a variety of weapons, instead of the class physically being locked to a particular one.

Well Conjurers can use either a 2 handed staff or a Wand/Shield combo. Thaumaturge is the same, just swap Wand with Scepter.
It's not exactly what your looking for, but if they can change it up a bit for these two classes then I don't why they couldn't with others. Unless of course thier saving certain weapon types for future classes.
It's a change from identifying yourself as your class, to identifying yourself as your character.

But what if its cards, and it goes yugioh style?
This was a design decision of the original game. Yoshi-P had ample time to change this around while remaking the game if he wanted to, but he apparently stuck with this.
Honestly I find it confusing that Gladiator, Conjurer and Thaumaturge are the only classes with any weapon choice at all, while the others are restricted to one type.

I don't understand how it is a step backwards. The weapon types are iconic for those classes.
Sorry that person cannot use a greatsword as he would like to, can't do anything about that. That weapon type doesn't really exist in the game at the moment (though there might be a sword or two that have teh graphic apearance of a sword, but count as a 2-handed axe. I believe i saw one like this in 1.0, but perhaps I am just making up nonsense.)
I see this system as a huge improvement over many other games where you are stuck with one class per character.
Also do not forget that as you level different classes you can use certain abilities you learned while another class is equipped. FOr example, levelling conjurer will let you use Cure as a gladiator, etc. It allows for greater cuztomization of your character.
Also keep in mind that when XI was released hey only had what? 6 or so classes? They added mroe and more classes as the game went on. Please give the game a try before making any judgements!
