i played the demo for a few hours and the only problems i had with it were modern day fps features that i hate (such as penalizing movement/jumping with spreading crosshairs), but that the present day shooter audience seems to like or at least expect (& never complain about).

and it had several nice & unusual/unique abilities(such as teleporting thru walls, gliding)

for all you people that hate it..... WHAT EXACTLY about it do you hate?

i'm not a fan of "average" shooters. it takes something more to keep me interested

there's a rare feeling that comes from a well put together shooter, or one that at least brings a well put together story along with a high level of polish to the game which will keep me at least playing for a time

im not sure i can put it into detailed words so ill just give an example:

quake, doom, counterstrike... those are all average shooters to me, not saying they are bad games and i understand why shooter fans enjoy them they just arent for me. where on the other hand Halo is an above average shooter, it has a certain play quality and a storyline that kept me entertained from start to finish and i played the entire halo series where as i could care less about sequals ot quake, doom or the dozens upon dozens of clones those games have spawned

shadowrun for me was a very average shooter, just didnt feel like anything special. its not a bad game per say, just  very routine and the simple act of skinning an average shooter with a shadowrun theme was not enough to keep me interested

you could reskin doom with a thousand different themes and unless you changed the mechanics to actually feel better and included a story that kept me hooked id still call it a doom clone and have no interest no matter how average your reskin was

my reasoning is this: i play games in every genre, gaming is my primary hobby, BUT i also have a real life with a real job and real friends and real relationships, i dont have the time to waste on average games. i pick and choose very carefully what i am going to spend my time with (beyond a demo, ill try anything once just to see if i should keep playing it)

This is pretty big news actualy. Wondred why this thread had been necro'd. It's a bit shit that it's going to be a browser game and not the AAA multi billion squid barnstormer that a lot of us have been asking for, for the last 200 years. But let's see what happens. Will be watching this with great intrest.

I was wondering if anyone have heard of this one.

    http://awakenedmmo.org/

From the limited reading I have done, it seems like a ground up MMO being done by Shadowrun lovers who actually went to Mocrosoft and got permission to make it under the condition that it will be not for profit.

It's set in the 2070 Seattle universe and has features like PvP, Permadeath and of course hacking.

I just wonder if anyone else has heard of this or is a part of the game in some capacity. I would really like to know more about what kind of schedules we are looking at and if they have had any conflicts with people making the for-profit versions.

That's because the combat in 4th edition is nothing like the combat in third edition, and that's what made third edition Shadowrun the Cadillac of roleplaying games.

However, the campaign setting in the new one is definitely better and more up-to-date.  The notion of the Grid being replaced by Augmented Reality definitely gave it a more modern, relevant feel.

I can see both sides to the matter of whether the nostalgic shadowrun's setting and technology trumps the more modernized edition. However, that debate belongs elsewhere. What should not be up for debate is how AMAZING a well executed shadowrun MMO could be! the little mix of everything put together so seemlessly is just quite awesome. it would be like the secret world only with magic and fantasy races and mad max kinda future setting. People would be getting geeked left and right and roleplaying and bringing their pen and paper avatars to life like never before!

Someone should definately let me know if they ever get around to making this IP into an MMO. I know there was an amateur effort underway that microsoft put the sease and desist order on but still...

I'm curious to how this avoided being considered as advertising.

I think it's a fantastic idea and I cannot wait to see th e finished product.

I have a blog here on Shadowrun if anyone is interested in checking it out.

I just wanted to point out: It's no longer a rumor. The licence is saved and a motivated developing studio is working on it. However they need your help to succeed. If you are interested, check out shadowrun.com/kickstarter . There's a thread about it on these forums now too:

I don't care for PnP games even though that's where Shadowrun originated. I was in love with the genesis game though.

A Shadowrun MMO game would be awesome, been saying it for years, unfortunetely I think the IP is a little too unpopular for someone to even consider turning it into an MMO.

I just hope they can do the IP justice. I love the Shadowrun setting and did some PnP back in the day, had a really good GM. Reading the history of the Shadowrun world is extremely interesting and very well fleshed out, so there is a lot of opportunity there. Lots of opportunities to really screw it up too though.

My absolute favorite IP to date.  The closest (yet still pretty far off) MMORPG to date I've have the pleasure of playing is Anarchy Online.  Of any possible "next gen" MMORPG (the rpg portion is VERY important) that could see the light there is not a single game I'd like to play more than this one.

EDIT: Based on the above linked video I'm less inspired although I can certainly appreciate the old school feel.  I just wish they could have incorporated a more Parasite Eve style combat system.  I'd still play the hell out of this one though.

First it was Ghosts N Goblins Online, now Shadowrun Online. I think a lot of old games are getting a reboot/remake to an MMO this year.

Will definitely try to play this game. I've played this in Snes. When I installed Snes emulator in my PC I downloaded this game immediately. Loved the story and the gameplay.
