personally, i don't need this game to be exactly like TES games or totally different than anything else ever made.
but it does need to be as close to TES as possible while also having good mmo elements to keep me entertained, especially at max level.
the only way to find that out is to try it for myself but i am glad most of the people that have got to play it seem to like it for the moist part so far.
I see a heavily instanced phased an possibily very linear game with some open spaces that you can zone into all day. They might make it feel like ES an I have to admit thats a feat upon itself and a good direction for games IMO however all the phasing instancing (megaserver) is a step backwards.
Originally posted by KingofHartz I wish we could get back to real talk instead of just constantly trying to sell up and coming games. So you got 2 hours of play time in. You liked it. It felt more single player rpg es than an mmo. Its not as immersive as skyrim. In 2013 all games that are using a poplar ip are fast cash grabs until 6-9 months after launch. At that point is the game picking up momentum or washing out.
i wish we could get real talk as well, rather than just endless trashing of a game people have never played lol
i don't listen to anyone on the forums anymore, if i made decisions based on the "real talk" on these forums, then i would think every game sucks and is not worth my money, well unless its an indy sandbox game of course.

Given my experience over the years, MikeB has always seemed to be fair and even handed. I've always respected that of him. But lets not forget, that fan bias can impact anyones judgement. Look at my support of Firefall, as an example of hope over reason... ^^
I've never been any great fan of TES series, so if its not like that series, I'd not count it a negative.
Everyone should do their own research on games, and make their own decisions.
I doubt that MikeB (or you) would allow money to bias your columns, but that possibility does exist out and about, so I'd not take it personally when someone mentions it.
I saw all the same stuff we covered extensively last week, so I didn't want to rehash it. It was the same build. Going into this I had one real goal in mind: find out if TESO actually felt Elder Scrolls. To me, it doesn't matter what the game is like if they boned this up. They would be missing the point. People are excited because they want to play Elder Scrolls...online! If it was just a standard MMO with an ES skin it would be a bust and so that's really what I wanted to find out.
You can run around and pretty much do what you want. The character creation is just as deep (if not deeper) than the singleplayer titles. The customization is too (skills, weapons and such). And the combat really embodies the spirit of Elder Scrolls combat. However, the whole package doesn't feel as good as say, Skyrim, but as I noted in the article, that's OK. There's no way it could have been.
No one is paying me, or us, for anything. Feel free to discuss the article, but let's leave the conspiracy theories at the door. I don't know if ESO will pan out to be an awesome game in the end -- but I do feel that they're doing an admirable job on geting the 'Elder Scrolls feel' right based on what I played at PAX, and that really frees up the rest of the stuff to even matter for me. That's what the purpose of this article was. We've got tons of straight information coverage for you to pore over and it's all from the build shown on the floor.
If that is the case, then this game cant be like TES.
Both you and Zenimax havent actually delt with the REASONS legions of TES fans are in an uproar. Adding 1st person does not add to it being like TES...how many other MMOs have that? a ton...they are not like TES.
The REASONS need to be addressed, just "saying" it feels like it, does nothing to address the issues. You are in a postion to bring these things to them, to REPRESENT the community.
The issues being spoken about on virtually every single TES website, from the offical site, the fan sites and the modding sites is simple.
Race/faction locks. closed faction lands (no, allowing us to go there at 50 to play in an instanced version is not opening them). PvP in an invisible closed off neverland with no threat to homelands. funneled level content all forcing everyone to the same place. Pretty elves. Lore changed to fit DaoC style gameplay...and now, limited crafting where you can only master 2 or be bad at it all...as well as the possibilty that skill points are limited allowing for forced class structuring via FotM for best outcomes(a question left unasked when reporting on the topic).
None of these things are TES, they (most) are DaoC design structures that did not need to be used as there are OPEN WORLD MMOs with OPEN RACE CHOICES and OPEN FACTION CHIOCES even with the ability to switch after character creation as well as MMOS that allow full training in ALL crafting skills to the max, and yes, we have had an MMO with NO LEVELS as well and now we have an MMO that scales the player to the content. We all know there sure are MMOs out there that doesnt place PvP in some safe zone while trying to tell us the WORLD is at WAR but allow us to bring that war to our enemies doorsteps (No I dont mean FFA PvP).
By using designs we know are out there that FIT TES there would be no need for changes to the lore nor for some reason getting rid of alien looking elves which I still cannot figure out for the life of me.
Its been said before, it will be said again, if this game WAS LIKE TES that would mean if it had DIFFERENT skins and npc/places names people would say the game is a ripoff of TES...which is NOT the case because its a ripoff of DaoC and is not reminiscent of TES.
Personally, I would LOVE for the game to be like TES. I am not against it just to be against it...but if this is DaoC in a TES package, I am going to be pissed because I am a massive TES fan that KNOWS TES can be made into an MMO and still be what TES is. There is NO NEED to make such massive sacrifices that vastly limits gameplay. So tell me, HOW is this game so much like TES with what has been released the last few weeks that takes away the communities ACTUAL ISSUES with the game?
Man, this game really seems to have gotten you upset. I believe if I were you that I would just cut my losses and just stop following it all. It's obvious you hate it, despite the fact it's not been released yet. I really don't see the reason you keep posting the same rhetoric, unless it's just to troll. I seriously doubt that the team making the game is going to scrap everything and start over due to finanical issues (investors).I would imagine trying to justify a move like that would be a nightmare. It would probably lead to loss of funding and the closure of development.
I'm making an assumption here ( I know, I know), but I figure you and many like you would reply "Good. If they can't make it right then it shouldn't be made at all. Somebody else can make it right" The odds of another company assuming the risk of a game that failed to even make it to launch, in this economy, are slim.
I hope the game does well personally. I too am a huge TES fan and have been since Arena. However, I also am a huge DAOC fan so my expectations probably differ from one who is just a TES fan. None the less, I will try the game. If I like it, I will keep playing it. If I don't, I won't. I simply don't play games that I don't like. Example: Neverwinter. I LOVED Neverwinter nights but I don't really care for it's MMO implentation. So, I'm not going to buy it.
I still don't really buy it Mike. Every MMO these days seems to be a 1-2 month experience, after which you've "finished" the game unless you PVP. I am not sure yet how TESO will be any different.
I guess I would have wanted TESO to be a PVE behemoth to rival games of old like WoW and EQ2 which you could spend a long time in. Instead I fear, contrary to what you say, that it is an IP cash grab with little imagination shown by the developers to deliver an MMO that is Elder Scrolls in more than just the occasional feeling.

Shortened your quote of my quote just for you, since you didnt seem to get that far.
Really FUNNY thing about it all is the amount of threads that got started the day of, and the day after they announced they made it so the other factions lands opened up and you could play in an instanced version of them, with a TON of DaoC fans suddenly crying about how their faction pride is now dead and the game is for carebears. The same people defending the game blindly from those complaining against it for months prior.
Its simple, DaoC fans are on board because they want DaoC...every single person complaining about the structure either never played DaoC or feels that the game doesnt need DaoC limiations because it doesnt fit the setting.
DaoC = 250k players.
Everyone else = over 20 million MMORPG and TES players. Who is their target? If its DaoC fans they should just say the game isnt really TES, just had to do it for hopes of more money by the corporation that owns them...otherwise, they need to address the issues with those that are going to continue to rip this thing to pieces and lessen the amount of people they can fool with their hype by pointing out the lies, and crazy idea that the game HAD to be made this way because its an MMO.

It's not just this site pretty much every game review site is the same. I have given up on game reviews all togeether I mostly visit the sites for information from the fans/playerbase as that should be your true source of information. The industry is shaped that they need to cast 90% of all things in a positive light or they just won't get sponsors can't blame em for that.
Every review is pretty much gonna be good every game is the next best thing...I cut straight thru that crap goto the playerbase an see the reaction an you get a good idea of a game.
It's just another mmorpg but it will have some fun stuff as do most games and it will have a VERY familiar world and this is why despite it being a basic mmorpg it will have a HUGE payday when it goes live.
Hero Evermore Guild Master of Dragonspine since 1982. Playing Path of Exile and deeply in love with it.
You guys keep saying that it plays like ES, but then say it isn't as pick up and play fun like Skyrim. You also say that we are expecting too much if we expect that from an MMO. Says who? I think if this game doesn't play lie an ES game then why the hell are they making it.
We don't want just another MMO. We want an Elder Scrolls game that is online.
I've seen and read all of the info I can from everyones hands on and I can tell you guys are giving the game a free pass (eventhough you claim that isn't what you are doing in the article) To me this sounds like just another MMO.
It's like ES, but not as good. It's like other MMOs but maybe a bit better. In other words... it's like every MMO that has came out within the last 5 years (minus GW2 which is actually somewhat innovative)
I will sign up for Beta and play and pay attention, but nothing so far makes me think I would pay 15 a month for this game. To be honest, that really sucks.
Force has a nice audio video up on Youtube talking about the game as he played it at Pax East. He did state no videos were allowed to be taken and only 3 character classes were allowed to be made. Also the game started them on a boat but the dev next to him said you will start the game captured and have to do the usual Elder Scroll escape to begin. He does a good job of explaining everything so you guys might want to give it a listen.
what i like most, and you can see it in all the above posts, is that players have awaken. they dont 'eat' what everyone serves them. enough.
we got sick of fat words, great previews etc, either from mmo studios or gaming sites. at last ppl wants to play the game first and have their own experience, their own opinion about the game.
next step IMO is stop pre-ordering, at least until you play final open beta. they take money even their game sucks, even if its the worst game ever, just because of an IP...
Ok, from these last articles i'm more convinced that it plays like a TES game BUT, who's doing the music? If it's not Jeremy Soule, no matter what they do there will always be something missing and it won't feel like a genuine TES game imo. His score creates that TES atmosphere and ambiance almost by itself.
Gameplay is one of the things ESO can really fine-tune during beta testing. Really in the end it comes down to fun gameplay and content. If gamers don't enjoy the ESO game they will quit.Similarly when they run out of fun ESO content they will quit. That is the challenge for the new mmorpgs. Reallly stack the content for players and fine tune the gaming experience.
Frankly, I'm disappointed that not only do most players seem to put too much focus on the combat, but developers as well. There is so much more to an MMORPG than its combat and in my book, a lack of focus on those aspects is what is really hurting current MMOs.
The combination of low expectations and what appears to be a very nimble developement team who are focused on making a game and experience first and then fitting that to an MMO may mean that this ends up being a minor hit after all.
They dont seem to be expecting big numbers or running on unrealistic market projections, so they might have a chance at the coveted number 2 spot that swtor and eve are currently slugging it out for.
"I must offer this one caveat though. At least based on what I’ve played so far, it’s not as satisfying to play moment-to-moment as say, Skyrim. But anyone expecting a 1:1 recreation of that experience with ESO has their expectations set too high. Some things are going to have to be compromised on when doing an MMO."
I think this paragraph summarizes the entire article.
My interpretation of the article is: "This game isn't as good as Skyrim, and I definitely did not feel the same sense of satisfaction as I felt in Skyrim. This is an MMO, so please realistically lower your expectations."
Depressing, isn't it? We all understand that message, but some of us have forgot that there was a time when MMOs had seemingly limitless potential. Now MMOs are being defined as having limited potential compared to single player games (such as Skyrim).
This video shows what I mean about weightless, floaty combat. Watch it with rose tinted glasses off. The animation priority currently being used for combat gives the whole affair the appearance of static non impacting combat. Look at the reaction of mobs and player models to weapon and spell hits.
I am really looking forward to this game but seriously what I have heard of combat from PAX and what little has been shown in the most recent vids is not looking good. I would hate for this to have everything and then for combat to be a real let down. If the combat is going to be more static fine at least let it feel like you are hitting your opponent.
Finally I have played all the ES games and yes sometimes combat is a bit floaty but at least the opponents react to being hit.

There are more current videos floating around the web from this weekend that show much more overexagerated swings in order to lend them weight. Both so far look off. I mean all you need to do is look at some SCA stuff, that is not how those sorts of weapons look like when they swing.

ESO is not what I wanted a ESO to be.
what i like most, and you can see it in all the above posts, is that players have awaken. they dont 'eat' what everyone serves them. enough.
we got sick of fat words, great previews etc, either from mmo studios or gaming sites. at last ppl wants to play the game first and have their own experience, their own opinion about the game.
next step IMO is stop pre-ordering, at least until you play final open beta. they take money even their game sucks, even if its the worst game ever, just because of an IP...
From the article:

But Bill, Mike also really likes Swtor, which sorta calls his opinion into question.
There are more current videos floating around the web from this weekend that show much more overexagerated swings in order to lend them weight. Both so far look off. I mean all you need to do is look at some SCA stuff, that is not how those sorts of weapons look like when they swing.
