Classes / Roles

GolazGolaz Member UncommonPosts: 24

Hi,

Is there any place where we can find any good information on classes that will be available?

I'm wondering what different classes there are, what abilties they have and what role they play on the battlefield, not worried so much for pve, but pvp is where my concern is.

What I want from a tank class basically is:

  • Crowd control
  • Buffs and debuffs
  • Should be able to soak up a lot of damage and deal little damage in return
  • Assist healer / dps classes in group
  • Guard group members
From a healer class i want:
  • Single target heals / healing over time
  • Group heals
  • Provide buffs to my group members
  • Cleansing / debuffing harmful effects on group members
  • Ressurect fallen players

Many of the features / abilities I have listed was available for tank and healer classes in Warhammer Online which I have been playing for years. I tried Guild Wars 2 at launch but found the classes really lackluster and boring in pvp.

Even though I love the defined classes in Warhammer Online it's time for me to move on for a number of reasons I wont go into here.

So what I'm asking is, will TESO have any type of the abilities I've listed?

I'm also wondering if there will be any collision detection for pvp?

From what we know so far...

    Templar - Defensive melee.

    Dragonknight - Offensive melee.

    Sorceror - Caster.

Nightblade - Stealthy hit and run melee / archer.

Of course this is a skill based game and anyone can wear any equipment so a templar could still equip and use bows.

We have been given very little information on skills / abilities.  Some will apparantly be dependant on class, some on items (use shiled more get more shield based abilities unlocked for example).

They have stated they are going more for AoE and conal healing spells for healing others and I get the impression they want players to mitigate damage using dodges and abilities.

    No information on collision detection.

Will have to wait until the NDA is lifted for a better look (assuming you aren't lucky enough to get into a beta event), or wait til someone breaks the NDA which almost always happens, though reputable sites will quickly remove such content.

I'm tired of having classes that does a bit of everything instead of focusing into one specific role. Will be interesting to see how this turns out for pvp.

If there is no holy trinity in place I think I will pass on this game. It didn't really work out for me in GW2.

As far as classes... any named class they name is more a suggestion and a starting point. You have free range on skills, armor and weapons. Armor and weapons as you use them will give skills that fit that item. You can start as a mage useing a sword and a sheild with heavy armor and end up being a tank. You willl have the freedom to make the class you want. Think it up and there is a good chance you can make it, much like TES game.

With no well defined roles the game will turn into a boring cookie cut FOTM PVP disaster.

There are roles. This is a trinity game. No word yet if their is enough CC skills to make a 4th role set.

You can focus on a specific role if you want.

I think we will have to wait see what abilties they put in first. Sure, in GW2 I could put a lot of points into the healing abitlities available, still doesn't mean it was insteresting to play a healer role as an elementalist..cause frankly it sucked.

This is not like GW2 in that. There are skills that fit the roles. Like heavy armor skills have much damage mitigation and if you go hard core and use I think its all heavy armor a passive skill of something like +25% to all healing done on you. The devs have said very plainly, if you want to play the trinity in this game its here. You can play by tatics as well for most game content but all roles are usefull in ESO. As always I have yet to see a MMO where tanking did well in PvP.

But that's two different things. Are you asking if you can focus on a particular role or are you asking if that role will be fun to play?

"yes you can focus". You don't have to add magic, one can put their points into a lot of stamina or a lot of health and just take warrior skills. O,r if one wants, they can be more of a mage and add all the magic. There is even a Healing/Resoration "staff" skill set for those who want to be healers. Or one can concentrate solely on destruction magic.

Having said that, I'm not clear on how they are dealing with aggro as per your comment that does remain to be seen But you can be whatever you want to be.

In that regard I think they nailed it in Warhammer Online. Was very satisfactory to play a tank and group setups depended on having them. If I can play a tank close to what I did in Warhammer Online I'm very happy.

What I'm asking is if I can solely focus on one role and excell in it compared to others that want to spread out their points in a skill tree. And will I have enough abilities at my disposal to make it an interesting role to play on the battlefield? Or will I be forced to play hybrid class to not gimp myself?

I will keep an eye on the game until more is revealed :)

lol, wel in that case "sure that remains to be seen". I certainly hope one can not gimp themselves by focusing.

My first char in Warhammer was a tank and did very badly 1v1. Takings other players damage in PvP as you took damage didnt work so well and healers didnt know who was tanking damage so they were not focusing on tanks. I found it to be a pain and a yawn fest. As a tank I want to wade into battle and be the point man. In PvP that just means you die first. Standing there eating someone elses damage IMO was not fun or the role of a tank. I think it can be done better.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences as a tank, but usually the tank is the one that dies last in organized play.

But if you ran into the zerg solo in lower tiers it's understandable.

hmmm, that wasn't really my experience.

I recall one time wading into battle, knocking back hordes of players and protecting our healers when needed (if there wasn't another tank protecting the healer). Also putting pressure on the opponent's healer as It was hard to kill me but eventually that healer would not be able to ignore me.

I was satisfied. I do wish I could have done more damage but I find the two examples I gave to be excellent experiences.

I'm OK withthat...as long as they have reactive heals, not just cones and such.

My favorite healer of all time was the WAR Warrior Priest. Rift had some similar too but their reactives weren't quite as good.

What do you mean by reactive heals?

Heals as a percentage of damage done. Warrior Priests in WAR had AOE heals for anyone nearby -- grouped or not -- based on the melee damage they did.

Chloromancers in Rift are similar except that's off their ranged spell damage.

From what I hear about heavy armor wearers in ESO getting bonuses to healing received, that sort of splash reactive healing would work well here: the tanks would just get healed more because they're wearing heavy armor.

Ya Warhammer and Rifts did this well. Really made healing fun =-)

From what I understand, there will also be some synergy based healing. So the healer could drop some kind of heal on the ground and another player could click on it to get a heal. Sort of like WoW's lightwell.

I believe the Warrior Priest is an example of "synergy healing", the light well, drop-click heal mechanism is just cheap and ruins fluidity.

Unless the clickable heal also teleported you to the healer or something...Similar to Thresh's lantern mechanic out of LoL. Then it becomes synergy of sorts...

Thank god for the trinity even though some dont like to be forced to do a role.  The classic trinity in PvE is tank, healer, DPS, but in PvP the dynamic changes to support, healer, DPS.  I certainly hope they have CC, hard counters against CC, and true immunity timers.  Being CC or stun locked is one of the worst things they can let into a game.  I quit WAR and Rift largely because of these things as it really kills the PvP experience whe you can be cheesed to death.   I also hope they have some speed mechanic other than a horse as well so smaller groups can hit and run larger less organized groups and have a chance.
