None have stand-out communites to me anymore. LotRO used to be great, but it's way too small now and doesn't feel that special anymore. It's mostly just F2P people running around doing their thing in the low levels before leaving.
A lot of games feel like they have no community, by design. GW2, for example. I see people, and sometimes I do stuff with them, but they feel like some NPC that's helping me more than anything else. WoW has become very closed due to the CRZ stuff. You're either running around with people from other servers that you have no desire to talk to, or you just stick to talking to your guild.
I guess Eve has a decent community, but it's a bit elitist and feels very small.
Pretty much this, no MMO has a positive community experience anymore because no MMO puts any weight on working as a team for 90% of the game.
I've been playing MMOs for over 10 years and have seen some of the best and worst MMO communitys have to offer, I'm curious what peoples opinions and experiences are in there games.
For worst I'm gonna have to go with Star Wars the Old Republic. Never have I seen so much negativity, eliteism and complaining. Between the forums and in the game itself there are so many nasty and arrogant players that always respond with snobby backhanded comments or outright insults to questions, anytime new features are implimented good or bad the forums are flooded with whining and complaining its really really bad and I know the game has many issues but a big issue with this game is the player base and their attitude.
The best community I've experienced was EQ2 the player base is generally very friendly and helpful many guilds are eager and recruit and help new players. Getting groups was always easy and there is so much group content and with the AA system many people do low level content to min/max their characters.
Honestly..community nowadays is like a mirror. You get from it what you project into it. Also it's kinda ironic that people talk about this generation of mmo players wanting things handed to them, while at the same time expecting utopian-like communities to just be there ready to accept them with open arms with doves and rainbows n sh*t.. Like it's something you can stumble upon. Or get lucky finding.
Well maybe if 90% of the players on these forums wouldn't enter these games with chips the size of oceanliners on their shoulders or their irritation meters on full sensitivity, they would be able to build the community they are looking for. Either that or find a mmo they enjoy enough to overlook what would otherwise be deemed a negative community.
quality of community relates to the happiness of the community. its no surprise communities of games that are stale, entirely based on damage meters, rip you off, poor quality or forces you to play constantly to keep up with the gear curve ultimately become foul.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Worst community in a game - LOL by a long shot. MMOs with the worst communities include WoW (too much trash talk), EVE (too much elitism for my taste) and probably games like SWTOR. But then again I haven't played any of these games (except for WoW) for long so that's mostly based on my first impressions.
Best community - hmm I don't know really. I have really enjoyed my time in GW1 and GW2 but not because of the overall community of the game but because of the guilds I have been. Also in GW2 I have noticed the vast majority of people are helpful and don't trash talk you, even the general chat is nice. But the guilds I have been in both of these games have been awesome and I haven't had the need to interact much with people outside of my guild. Overall I was super suprised with how nice people are in GW2 especially considering the crap that was flooding the GW1 general chats.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
Best: SWTOR, RIFT (when I played), and COH/COV-RIP
Worst: EVE (but this is a good thing the way it's setup), World of Warcraft (too many stupid Elitests for an easy mode game), and GW2 as not one person communicated with me when I played. The way its setup you dont have to sadly.
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
Over the five years that I've played LOTRO, it has far and away the best community of any other mmo I've played. Only in LOTRO have I seen people give things away for free as a normal course of playing. Only in LOTRO has the advice channel been free of trolls. And only in LOTRO have I never seen a bot, known someone hacked or received a spam mail.
That's freaking amazing.
Give away frree items old habits from old players of AC2:)
On the other hand, even if i dont tag SWTOR as best community, i think it to be a very good community, the true problem arround it are the Bioware haters, who don't play the game and flood forums trying to take players away (i know it makes no sense, never undertood this irrational behaviour).

Empty utensils make a lot of noise and that is all there to it. No one can take away players from SWTOR just by constant complaining on forums. A minority of playerbase vists forums like these.

Great to see people participating in this thread, I think strong community is an important aspect of MMO and I'm definatly seeing allot of common opinions on worst and best.
Glad people agree about EQ2s community its definatly the best community i've ever experienced in an MMO and hope that foundation carrys over into EQN. I also see LOTRO coming up allot as well.
For me the best one is GW2 becuase it weeds out the players that have the raider/gear grind mentality. Not that I really have much against those people, it's just their playstyle doesn't coincide with mine or GW2, that's all. I tend to get along with PVP'ers a lot more just due to common interest.
The worst turned out to be WoW for me becuase of all the ridiculous chat spam and random duel requests really get on my nerves. Just like random group and guild invites.
2nd Best : Beta LotrO both community/developers aswell community managers, much changed when Open Beta started.
3rd Best : Fallen Earth, have met some great people in FE that just wanted to group to group and we''ll see where we end up, some missions, some exploring, some talk about past ingame experiances. Which really suprised me since mostly most MMO's since WoW often have these so-called efficient gamers, that just group to get the job done and that's it.
Worst : Most MMO Open Beta, doesn't really matter which MMO, you really if being in a Closed Beta see a hugh difference.
Apart from that each and every MMORPG has his fare share of best and worst in the end it just depends what you will and will not ignore within the game. I could say WoW but that's pure based on getting this new experiance where people argue over loot, it was really something I never experianced in a MMORPG. Ever since I am that guy you group with that alway's pass, regardless how wonderfull that loot might be. Unless of course I made the group and asked for help obtaining a certain Item. But with pugs...I'll pass with loot rolls and you can have what ever it is.
The Worst? Hands down S4 League for me. The game was not only filled with glitches but obnoxious hackers who really think it's using skills to hack a game to have an advantage over fair players. But the funny thing about it was sometimes there were those "Rage Hackers", that would still be losing the game even with the help with hacks and then just make the game crash. I couldn't help but laugh when this happaned.
I swear the only thing good about that game was its music. -_-
While I agree LoL has one of the communities with the most elitist asshats in the whole video game industry, it's not a MMO, and the OP asked about MMOs
All my friends play multiple games. Many players play multiple games. If i met some nice people playing wow, and now some of us move to D3 .. is the D3 community nice? Or is the WOW community nice?
Your private friendship circle is not the general game community... what does that have to do with the OPs question? I had friends in WoW, and a fun guild, but that didn't blind me to the fact that WoW had a god awful community. They're entirely separate things.
You can usually judge a game community based on how two strangers might interact. In a game with a good community they'll probably chat pleasantly and cooperate on some level, in a game with a bad community they'll probably swear, insult, taunt, kill or just plain ignore each other.
Generally speaking the best game communities are formed in smaller, less popular titles with a non-competitive focus. The more popular a game gets, the more it attracts the asshats, and the more competitive the game is the more egotistical everyone becomes.
best: EQ2 EU side afew years back, as I didnt care much for the general community the past few years....it were actually a really nice change to go from US server to EU server back in 2007 iirc....but feel like the EU server, last I played felt like the old US server.
not to say everyone is just terrible....always found some great peeps both on US and EU servers
Worst: LoL and Mabinogi (constant drama in Mabi, tons of annoying people who are always going on how awesome they are, and to top it all of relationship drama galore, which I personally find super creepy as it's a game and you should be playing it instead of trying to virtually date strangers). TERA is pretty bad too (tons of pedophiles for some odd reason).
Best: Guild Wars 2 hands down. The people are very friendly and I've only had one bad experience where I was kicked out of a guild because the guild catered to the higher ranks and an officer complained about me because he accused me of something on guild chat and then I proved him wrong in front of the whole guild.

Worst - EVE ONLINE
Best - Saga Of Ryzom.
Best is EvE and WoW's Bonechewer server back in TBC.
Worst is WoW currently and certain casually anti-semitic fucks in EvE.

Best ever: FFXI
