[Column] Guild Wars 2: Keeping Busy

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In our latest Guild Wars 2 column, we take a look at how players can keep themselves busy as they reach the level cap. It's a one-of-a-kind read that you won't want to miss. Check it out before letting us know how you keep yourself busy in Guild Wars 2 in the comments.

One of the great things about Guild Wars 2 is how smooth the character progression is.  Even going from level 79 to 80, you don’t feel like you spent a whole day doing 30 quests in a row to level up.  By just playing the game, you’re making progress.  But this is also a bit of a curse.  As soon as a player hits max level they stop exploring and look for end game dungeons.  You can’t blame them because that’s how most MMOs have been designed for so many years.  They end up skipping the rest of their personal story, the rest of the world exploration, and may even skip a few of the dungeons.

When you start to make armor and weapons out of items from the kitchen to look more like a Norn, you should probably take a break from playing.

    Nice write up, thanks David.

I have to admit, I sold out of pc gaming but, and I cant believe this, GW2 has drawn me back in. Newpc coming ttomorrow and I cant wait to jump back into this great game. Sometimes you just need a little break to appreciate what you have.

Smooth character progression? Well guess leveling wise it doesn't feel as 'static' in how long it takes to level, though character progression feels to be one of the weakest part of GW2 as leveling doesn't feel like you accomplished anything at all really.

Still the article feels more like an excuse for the lack of content then anything. I really feel that considering its focus on not having like a gear grind (unless youw ant to consider the grind for dungeon tokens or the grind on killing mobs for cash) it just lacks enough content to feel worthwild to do.

Gw2 needs actual content, stuff to feel worth wild to do. It doesn't need to give you a reward in terms of making your character stronger or anything, but it just needs things to keep players busy. Even if I get past the meh combat and progression, there just doesn't feel like theres all that much stuff I WANT to do. The only thing it has going for it is events which range from cool/interesting to simply 'meh'.

I can t count how many times I ve stopped logging into this game, to try it again a couple weeks later, to hope I like it more. Honestly, I like it less more and more each time I do that. I feel no connection to my char at all, and everything feels un fun to me. Oh well theres people that like it and people that hate it, just like any MMO.  Smooth character progression is one thing I wouldn t say for this game, ad I didn t feel like I was progressing at all.

Still loving it. The new content is always great, the jumping puzzles are great, the new WVW is awesome, the Super Adventure Box is a stroke of genius, and the whole game has kept my interest since launch - very rare for a game. My guild grows each month, the WvW queues get longer, and the game seems to get better the more you play it.

However, try to play it like WoW and you wont like it. Its evolved from WoW and you have to play it with a different mindset, and when you do, its fantastic. Cant wait to see what they bring in next!

I really can't get into this game. I have it installed and I do try and hop on now and then and really try to 'get' into it. But, I just don't feel anything with it.. I find the content available are all just mild distractions with no real sense of direction. Direction itself is subjective, but the game gives me no real goals to achieve or something to progress into.

I don't consider achievments goals, but fun distractions. At the end of the day, playing the game is the 'distraction' I don't need distractions within my distractions... this isn't Inception the MMO.

What Kinknax said!  I love this game, and it is my favorite mmo ever, and I have played most of them at one time or another.  I am so glad they eliminated the gear grind at the end so that when I join any end game content, I know I am up for the task.  The dynamic events and the exploration are the best parts to me.

Played it since the day the servers opened, still very much enjoying myself. I keep doing different stuff, like getting my Dungeon Master title, playing some Fractals, currently quite busy in WvW and started to do some PvP. I don't need constant gear progression and I don't miss the trinity even if I enjoyed playing healers in other MMO's. A good and balanced team where people know their skills makes dungeon running very smooth.

Thankfully I have a very big and active guild so there are always likeminded people around to team up with and to do guild missions and such activities together.

Story lines and scripted quests bore the crap out of me.

If I want good story and lore I will play single player games, that do the scripted stuff way better anyways.

more and more story content wont keep true mmo player enganged.

I play MMOs to in a virtual world with other people, not to be told a story.

I really wish this wasnt the main focus of current MMOS, they dont last.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

For me none of the content added have done it for me. I had high hopes for game, but I have come to realize it will never be the go to game for hardcore pve players. Following that line of reasoning they should quit their feeble attempts in that vein (fotm, living story) and focus on casual pve stuff (mini games, cosmetics, achievements) and pvp (flesh out wvw, and do some serious spvp balancing). Would not bring me back but would probably do their core audience a lot of good.

Ahhh Gw2, at first I LOVED it, then I started getting bored and didnt play it for 4 months.... now I LOVEEE IT AGAIN. The new pvp bgs are pretty amazing... the pvp  when its not a giant zerg fest, is kind of amazing. I can really play every profession in a number of ways, all of which are pretty viable. Admittedly I left because of lack of pvp progression, then I realized how cool the gear looks, and I need to hit rank 50 NOW.

I have 7 lvl 80 chars, so to keep playing I am working on number 8!

No idea if I'll keep playing after that.

  • Lovely_LalyLovely_Laly Member UncommonPosts: 734

was nice to get my first char to lvl 80, explore, craft etc.

once it was done, game became boring.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

This is true and it's why the Guild Wars 2 Buy 2 play MMO model will be so successful.  You don't have to obsess over one game or even one platform.  Come and go as you please.

I play GW2 since beta, and I start to become bored. The reason is that you just keep doing mega events, dungeons and WvW in the end. If you are like me that love crafting things you will end forced to do that and stop explorer the vast world because the good drops are not there. ANet could insert good crafting drops on champions and jumping puzzles along the world .

I saw bots just doing small mobs and nodes and I cant imagine bots doing champions and puzzles.

But for now this idea its just a dream or a good suggestion in the forums.  The new events are always amazing but you end up spending time to get the skins and items and them return to the bored part (at least for me).

that started happening to me with every article. My only solution was getting adblock. I dont mind ads on the website as long as they dont obstruct the actual content.

I really like to say that GW2 is a very very very PERSONAL game.

I mean, since this mmo brings so many changes to the classic MMO style, its very easy to find "crazy fans" and "bored haters" all over the comments. So, I really sugest, whoever is reading this to just try the game for yourself.

But, beaware! If you like a game that "guides you" : GW2 gives you freedom, its a different concept. Some players find that "boring" other find a challenge in that.

I play it since betas, and tho I think may things could be better, I still can't picture myself playing any other mmo (And I have tried!).

For real, I am currently through FFXIV ARR beta, and sometimes I "try" to play TERA and WOW, but I really can't go back to the old mmo concept. Classic trinity, quest logs, grinding for a better gear, always having a "higher goal to achieve"(so you can finally feel like you worth something), stuff like that. (btw, gw2 of course still kept some old basic concepts of mmos, cause otherwise it wouldn't be an MMO!).

In other games, I always ask myself if in any of those games I'll be able to create a "powerful tanky mage with dual daggers"? Hell, no!

And not only that, I SERIOUSLY don't know how people find so much time to play and get bored so quickly! I mean, I work mostly all day, but I am playing for a long time now, and even tho sometimes I leave to have a more "single player experience",  there is still so many things to do (specially with those constant updates) which keep me logging into from time to time.

To sum it all, for what I feel, GW2 is a cursed MMO. It changed too much and human mind can't accept it easily. Those who can drop the old style and go into something new love gw2 but many many are still reluctant in doing that. Thats why I say its such a personal game. Depends a lot on how you will be able to see what GW2 presents to you.

I, for my experience, love it. Sometimes I leave to try another "relationship" but in the end I just come back for moar :)

    Cheers!

I realy love the game but I do agree that when I hit lvl 80...I dont wanna explore anymore and after some time I start leveling a new character..

Now I have 4 lvl 80 chars and will sooon start on the next one..

The game is the best out there but they endgame gets boring real quick.

  • evilastroevilastro Member Posts: 4,270

Been backing off from the game a bit lately. The combat is fun, but the PvP structure really needs some work. And PvE, well I'm not the type to continue grinding after I have seen everything.

WvW is in a good state, but as with all open world PvP, its a zerg, and I dont find that overly rewarding in terms of combat.

Structured PvP and battlegrounds are usually what keep me playing a game, and GW2s is a bit of a mess at the moment.

    1) Map variety. I know they think that map control is the only 'competitive' type of PvP, but they realise that not everyone is in it for the tournaments. You can limit what modes are used in tournaments. Additional modes like keep / castle defence, team elimination (permadeath once your priest is dead), capture the relic etc would go a long way to maintaining interest.

    2) Skill variety, and more importantly, linkage of weapons to traits. Linking the weapons to traits was a big mistake, it means that you only have one and occasionally two choices of trait builds per weapon. Making for very predictable and boring gameplay, especially in PvP.  Rework the traits and make them non-weapon specific. Also add more weapons, utility skills and a choice of weapons kills per weapon (2-3 per slot). More variety really is essential for long term interest, definitely moreso than attempting balance.

I am sure they will get to this stuff eventually, I definitely got more than my moneys worth from the game, but until they add more things that interest me, I am not going to torture myself to keep playing. Sometimes I feel like a fix and jump on for a few PvP matches, which is why I love the business model that they chose.

As with any MMO. the flaw is that you cant really affect anything, other than maybe the trading post and WVW (till reset). Everyone is a hero, so no one is. You spend an hour killing Jormag and he comes back every 4 hours like clockwork.
  • LydonLydon Member UncommonPosts: 2,938
I've been playing since beta weekend 2 and I have just reached 50% world completion on my first character yesterday...that's why I laugh when people say that there's nothing to do.

I think if you are playing MMOs, you have to deal with this fact unless someone comes up with a viable solution to this "flaw". If people find this is the main reason NOT to play an MMO, they shouldn't be playing MMOs in the first place. MMOs are persitent. This has both its pros and cons. The inability to affect the world is just one of various cons. But is there anything you can about it? Nope, or at least I haven't come across a viable solution.

I find GW2 fairly boring at max level. True, I still have tons to explore on my main char but I just find that boring. WvWvW is too zergy for me. sPvP is the only thing which is fun but it gets repetitive because of the lack of map types. Seriously, I can't comprehend how ArenaNet thought that having 6-7 maps with one and the same objective would be fun. Why they didn't introduce standard game types such as capture the flag, deathmatch + the game types from GW1 is beyond me.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

The main solution is sandbox. Give players more freedom and control over the world. WvW, for all that its the same map and same objectives, at least you dont really know what your going to fight. Gw2 is the best non sandbox MMO out there, but until more games take a risk, we'll keep getting these 'keepingbusy' posts.

I am a big GW1 fan, had my hopes so high for GW2.

Never thought I would actually force myself to log on and play the game, have 2 lvl 80 and 3 level 34-38. Unfortunately after you reach 80 all you got to do is grind, grind dungeons for tokens, grind items for crafting, grind achievements, grind daily for added currency laurel, grind WvW, grind for almost everything except leveling your character which moves fast. AND THE MAJOR LIFE TIME GRIND for legendary. Game is diffinelty for super hardcore players.

Skills selection is a joke, few skills to pick up and thats it. You are using pretty much same skills set (equiping your preferred weapon), as for utility skills they have a bit wider selection range but still, its not possible to stand out among others skill wise. You should master dodging that is all.

Story is nice at first but gets really boring with 2-4 figures switching turn to talk...cinematic in GW1 are intense and draws you into the game story and characters, but in GW2....I dont think so.

Cant believe am enjoying SWTOR more than GW2, this game was a major blow in the face for me. I still try to play every now and then, I just hope my interest for GW2 grows back in time.

EDIT: wanted to add that games events are money sink, I spent whole lot of money on GW2 but that has stopped since winterday, never spent a dime on it after.

Conclusion: Hit 80 and start your chore journey.
