Originally posted by DoubleDragon Oh, thank you. I had so much fun reading this article. And learned a bit. So much innovation in AO? Damn, I should have played it back then and not listen to naysayers.
AO was ahead of it's time:
One of the first flying classes (Meta Physician)
Player housing on day one
The first game I can remember that had player owned aircraft.
A full length novel describing the back story of the game
CGI vignettes that set up the story that the newest update revolved around
Changes to places and factions based on those vignettes
It was also the only group I have seen that appointed a player advisory council and actually tried to implement information they got from them.
It's a shame they were saddled with a bad launch, slow patches, and billing issues. It hurt the prospects for what eventually became an awesome game.
When I see features in games that are from other games I have played and liked it is never a bad thing imo, dynamic content is fun, I enjoyed it in W.A.R., Rift, and GW2. I do think from what I know from the videos and such that the "version" of the dynamic content we are going to get will be closest to the GW2 "version" of it. That is probally why people have been calling it a copy of their events.
Really though in this industry, not just this genre, using ideas that work and are fun to play and putting a little fresh new twist on them is not unheard of for so many great games that are out there, it is a key element of the evolution of the gaming industry as I see it.
i don't mind games taking from other games.. of course they will they have to.. there just isn't enough things out there you can do with this sort of game without taking mechanics from other games.. all i can say though is if you are going to use systems from other games at least improve on them.. so many times i see recycled systems used in new games that feel like a greatly inferior version of whats come before.. this is a huge problem for me when games use similar systems to older games
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Everquest got its first dynamic event, the Ring War, in the Velious expansion back in 2000. A year before you credit Funcom with making the first dynamic event. So really you can thank SoE for bringing dynamic events to MMOs.

I think you certainly have your companies mixed up. For starters, FunCom created games such as Age of Connan and The Secret World, not Final Fantasy. Also, although AoC wasn't exactly the most playable game for some people at launch, FunCom have always been successful and have high respect especially these days with AoC being more playable and free along with their more successful title The Secret World, which is also free to play now. As for Square Enix, who is the creator of Final Fantasy, they've never had a failed launch, FFXIV was the only failure they had as an MMO or a game in general.. well, mostly. And if you want my personal opinion FFXIV wasn't really a failure, its just some people didn't like how it was cus they want too much of the themepark multi-quest and easy to solo gameplay, though you see alot of people saying they're getting bored of it, how ironic. So.. yeah, anyway, if you're going make a statement like that at least get some facts straight unless of course you really are trolling which to me is an epic fail right there cus frankly your statement doesn't even come close to the truth about either of the companies, its not even funny.
Seems like you're the one trolling around here. What exactly did he say that got your panties in such a bunch? The article talked about some innovations from Anarchy Online, a Funcom title, so the guy said it was nice to see Funcom getting some credit for it, and I agree with him. They're also known for having some rocky launches, so how was he trolling by stating that?
I think your tirade was a bit misplaced.
Edit: Wow, didn't realize how old this was. Ah well.
I vividly remember my first mass AI events in Asheron's Call, what, 11 years ago? Monthly updates to storyline were awesome, but the first time a town was flooded/taken over was amazing. While the first several ones were most obviously dev triggered/controlled, they were later very much coded in events. Just part of the ever expanding awesomeness I now realize AC was well after I tried moving on to 'Bigger and better' things (SW:G ,many betas, EVE, etc, etc, etc). Sadly none held the length of time AC did for me.
Anyhow, very off topic. AI events need to be part of any MMO I play, something to keep things a little more interesting (bye bye Neverwinter).

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
