A hell of a lot more then $2.50 and you even had to buy the box.
Nothing is making you buy these items nor will it affect you getting to max level.
I'm not playing GW2 even tho i bought the game heck i didn't played a single time since it launched(only during the Beta).
GW2 launched with more classes and races than NW and with arguablly more content, NW forces you to pay for allot of things and will make you pay for more content. There is a reasonable amount to spend on a game per month and to me NW is way way off that sum, not to mention that it does it in very poor taste. I've spent 50-100 GBP some times in a month in LoL without any regerts since there have been periods where i didnt spent a dime for a much longer period. I have enough disposable income to spend on stuff, but feeling forced to do so i just no my cup of tea.
Actually NW has 7 races (not including the Drow) and 5 classes (with more coming), GW2 had 5 races and 8 professions not much of a difference there.
Classes are harder to make and more important in terms of diversity, and at least the races in GW2 had a unique setting and story line. But again this isn't about GW2 vs NW, and the fact that one game makes a cash grab does not mean that another should, you should not excuse somthing you disagree with just because others also might be doing somthing simmilar.

You do get this is a F2P game, so please tell me how they will make money to fund game without a cash shop? If people want to spend $50 dollars on a mount who the heck cares I know I don't. No one is forcing you to play the game or if you choose to play buy anything from the CS. The items from the cash shop do not stop you from levelling or enjoying the foundry.

With respecs costing real money people will be unwilling to experiment with builds.
So, people not wanting to be stuck with a crappy build are going to check forums, get the most optimal "cookie cutter" build and follow that to the letter.
Hooray, everyone is the exact same. Yes, how refreshing indeed.
or people are just too lazy to roll another character to experiment with other builds.
never played NW but $5 seems a resonable price for re-speccing. it's a free game and they need to make money somehow. if you want to re-spec, re-roll. or cough up a few dollars.
Since nobody is bothering to answer the OP's question, I'll give it a shot keep in mind it's pretty long because there are a lot of aspects to this, some not so obvious at first:
There are 2 major currencies in the game related to cash shop / item mall / P2W / etc: Astral Diamonds and Zen.
Zen can be purchased through Perfect World directly. There are only two other ways to obtain Zen: by earning "free" zen through special offers on the PWI website or by trading Astral Diamonds through Zen. This currency is used to purchase a number of things on the cash shop including cosmetics such as dyes and fashion items, companions (which are NPC allies that level up with you that you cannot control), profession packs that speed up your speed and quality of crafting, mounts, bags, lockboxes, adventure kits which give you various essential items, full heal items, res scrolls (including groups res), and various "services". I'll detail a few of these in a bit.
Astral Diamonds have even more uses; however they can be obtained directly in game. They come in two varieties, unrefined and refined. You can refine 24k Astral Diamonds per day, and right now 500k Astral Diamonds seem to be somewhere in the $10 range. You earn Astral Diamonds by Invocation, Daily Events, and sometimes special Events. At level 20 I can't see how it's possible to earn over 7k Astral Diamonds per day, and doing your dailies + innvocation every hour will net you ~6k. You can also earn Diamonds (Refined) by selling items on the Auction House which only uses the AD currency and by trading Zen for Diamonds. You can also earn Astral Diamonds through tips by other players if they enjoyed your Foundry dungeons.
Astral Diamonds can be used to purchase gear directly from special merchants. There are many vendors in the main Neverwinter city that use Diamonds as their currency of choice. Astral Diamonds are also used to speed up profession and companion training, and this is how people managed to hit cap in less than 1 day since you get EXP for completing a profession task. Professions in this game work exactly like say a Zynga game where you simply send out a crafter and wait a set amount of time for them to come back (you do require materials to craft, but you can send the Crafters to harvest for you too). They are the only currency you can use on the Auction House to trade with other players.
Okay, now to summarize and explain exactly what you are getting with Zen:
Dyes and Fashion Items - Fashion items are appearance only clothing you can wear. Dyes change the color of your armor and clothing. Dyes are consumed when you use them unlike say GW2 where they unlock permentantly on that character. You also need to buy dye removers if you want to remove a dye and put the color back to it's original.
Adventurer Pack - These give you indentification scrolls and "skill kits" which let you use other professions gathering and secret finding skill. For the most part this is a big waste of money as you can easily buy these cheaply with currency in game.
"Potions" - These include a scroll that completely heals you instantly when used and is spammable. Yes, P2W at it's finest. Can't be used in PvP at least. These also include res scrolls which basically revives you where you are with no penalty and mass res scrolls which do the same thing, but for your entire group.
Keys - These open lockboxes. I'm not going to go into these too much, but there is a thread about it. Basically you can get blue gear (and epic gear if you trade bars), epic mounts, epic companions, epic runestones, and epic enchants, but they are gamble items and higher value items have a much lower chance.
Wards - These prevent you from having any chance at losing a runestone when you combine runestones to make stronger ones.
Bags - More bag spaces and additional companion slots. You can buy bank space too.
Companions - NPC allies that follow you around. Unsure if epic companions are better than common ones as the rarity seems tied more to looks, though each companion does have a unique set of abilities stats seem fairly equal.
Mounts - You can buy green (+50% movement speed), blue (80%), and epic (110%) mounts here.
Profession Pack - These give you more (and better) crafters that increase the quality of crafts and the amount of crafting you can do at once as well as assets that do basically the same thing as better crafters.
Services - More character slots, rename, respec, and appearance changing items.
And Astral Diamonds:
Gear, generally limited to blue quality.
Some cosmetic consumables like Party Poppers.
Anything you buy on the auction house from other players. (Also the 10% fee for placing the item on the Auction House)
Runestones of various qualities (which you can further combine for even higher quality runestones)
Blue Quality Companions
Rushing Companion Training and Profession Training so it finishes instantly
all i know is I am clinging onto my respec token from my founders pack until lvl 60. At least prior to lvl 30 (I heard that is when the game actually becomes challenging) I don't see how you can screw up a build at all. The game isn't that difficult. It is just fun

The P2P model is based less on playing a game and more on maintaining an avatar a la Second Life. The introduction of paying for cosmetic items and mounts, rather than working toward them, means the developers are giving players a short cut to buy the items rather than waiting for that money via sub for the time spent it takes the player to earn it in game.
Is it a more efficient way for players to get items they want and companies to get money? Maybe. It's a balance though because otherwise the game becomes less a game and more like barbie dress-up online.

No, it's nauseating actually. This is basic character development - the best part of any MMO or RPG - that is being barred behind a price tag. This is what is wrong with gaming now. Every turn they can charge, they will.
most of players make mistake of building their character at first and that way there is multiple respecs along the way now if these all costs 5,- daaaamn. so its delete character and start over when need of respec if you dont wanna lose money

Nods Head.
These sir's be wise

Good were the days pre-2004 in the MMO-genre.
One super succesful game came along and ruined the entire genre by being too succesful
lol if some of the people in this thread had their way the cash shop would be so cheap or non-existent the game couldn't make any money. I get that you wish it were a sub game, I do. But it's not, get over it and either play as you can for free, or don't play at all.
You fail to realize that 100% of the content is available, there's no "you have to purchase these special gems in order to craft your epic gear" or "buy this dungeon pack!" You can play this game as much as you want for free and how dare they have the nerve to charge $5 for a character respec! THE NERVE!!!
Seriously, constant respeccing is a rather new feature in RPGs/MMOs but now people feel entitled to them. If you can't afford $5 Cryptic probably isn't too concerned about losing you anyways. The rest of us will have fun and respec when we need too/want too.
THE NERVE! lol
Yes, how dare they make me have to waste my money for the fact that I screwed up my character. HOW DARE THEM! *shakes fist*
I totally agree keep the $5.00 respec like that. Heck increase the price! People shouldn't get this kind of thing for cheap. It's their fault for messing up their character(s) to begin with and it's their fault in assuming that they'll get to respec at free will.
You of course realize that skill potency (and by extension, build effectiveness) are in a constant state of flux in games like these, yes? It's hardly the player's fault if a pivotal ability gets nerfed. And before you say something stupid like, "Well, the player should've known the skill was OP and not have used it!", I will point out the fact that plenty of skills / abilities receive unwarranted nerfs on a constant basis. Just ask WoW's shamans...
Furthermore, limited access to respecs does in fact, limit experimentation for people who don't have time to reroll their character and play through the exact same content 5 or 6 times (which is usually incredibly tedious) just because a skill didn't work as described, or was bugged, or was changed by a clueless dev. If you played Diablo 2 as anything other than an extremely 'hardcore' player, you used a cookie cutter build, end of story.
I'll end by saying that people also shouldn't have to obsess over every single skill / attribute point to avoid screwing up their character. Having to go on forums or websites to research every single skill / attribute decision is tedious, impractical, discourages outside-the-box thinking, and just plain not fun for a good number of people. Games are supposed to be fun, not work.
In short, respecs should be available for a sufficient amount of in-game currency. They're a matter of basic functionality these days, and should be treated as such.

The point is that there shouldn't be that option to begin with.No game should charge me for basic functionality that every single worthwhile MMO costs out in-game. The real price option shouldn't be there.
It isn't a basic functionality. If you want free respecs, go pay monthly for World of Dailycraft or some other 'worthwhile' MMO then, because D&D typically don't have respecs at all, period. At least they are offering them for a small cost or some minor in game currency for those that like to bitch about everything and how the game needs to be more like WoW or whatever other MMO they stopped playing previously.
D&D has w/e the DM decides it has, P&P games have no limitations you want a new char/respec you can get it.
Ive played D&D PnP games since 2.5 and even I know that this statement is wrong. In D&D PnP Games there ARE limittations, and they are pretty obvious. Theres a limit to how many classes you can combine, theres a limit to the skills you can have(swimming, cooking, first aide), depending on the class you use theres a limit to your stats and health(while its possible for a warrior to roll all 18s for stats its impossible for a Wizard to have all 18's). The list of limitations for PnP games is as long as the marianas trench is deep. With every new rule set that is released the list of limitations gets even longer.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

I've been playing D&D since way before that i have no idea what 2.5 is since there was never D&D 2nd edition there was D&D, Advanced D&D and 3rd edition. And it's a PnP game there are NO limitations, the limitations are what the DM decides and what the group that is playing agrees on. The rules are there for a suggestion a good DM tweaks them to make the exprience more enjoyable for his party. If you wan't a new char an no one cares that you "reroll" or respec the DM will allow you to get a new one, iirc there are even guidelines in the DM rule book on how to do that...
In Neverwinter Nights we couldn't respec, and we loved it because it made our decisions count, and because that's how DnD is. No respecs, period. If you screw a toon, roll another.
Now since it's Cryptic/PWE behind it, not respeccing (or having to pay 5$ for it) is a bad design. I don't know, either people don't know what DnD is, or the casual monster has really beaten the mmo population.
PS: Saying that the DM can change a character's spec as they wish makes me actually sad to think how hard have some people been raping the DnD universe with the excuse of being DM. As if being DM required a diploma or some degree of superior wisdom and intelligence, heh. Being DM is a 11 years old kid grabbing the DnD manual and saying "I am the DM". The tricky part is being a good DM.
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.
OP, just because this game has "Dungeons & Dragons" in it's name doesn't mean it will be a quality game and also the game comes from PWE; one of the worst f2p game publisher in this world. and also is this your 1st f2p game? f2p games have always "nickle-dime" basic features like bag expansion or bank expansion or respec or they name some skills "advance class skill" and ask money for them. PWE is reknowned for doing things like that, that is the reason i stopped playing their games. but at least they are not asking you to pay for quickbars or hide your head slot, right?
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

You have not played many PWE games, have you? just wait a bit and you will have to buy cash shop material to craft mods or high level gears. the 1st 6 months in PWE games is just "freebie service". 6 month later the "real pwe" comes out and you won't even feel poetic to say "at dark night the wolf comes out for flesh", you will simply say "FUCK PWE".
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.
Well we as players have to make a stand for what is right, I do not appreciate being nickel and dimed as im sure no one else does. Developers will continue to do this untill we the players stop playing thier garbage. The issue is you always got that one rich jerk who spends a bazillion bucks in the micro transactions and that justifies it to them to continue producing games like this.

I dont know the DM's that let you get away with Respeci'ing but the DM's(and during the times that I DM'd) Respec'ing was NOT Allowed. When I DM'd when you rolled a character you was stuck with it until it died. If you wanted to roll a new character everything about it was new. Oh and just for the record AD&D is also called D&D 2.0e and 2.5e Rule Sets if you actually played D&D like you claimed to have you would know this.

You can buy a 24 slot bag for 1000 zen or a 12 slot bag for 600 zen BUT you get additional free bags later in the game. You will get a extra 18 slot bag early on and ~28/29 you will get a additional 12 slot bag when you finish the quest line at the graveyard.
If you need still more room, you can either mail the stuff to yourself or to other chars. 2 char slots are 500 zen, so cheaper then a bag. Plus each char has bank + guild bank (need 5 chars to create one).
Mounts:
Starter mounts sell for 500 BUT at lvl 20 you get a quest for free one. Basic speed, think it was 50%.
Companions:
You can buy dozens of companions for Zen up to 3500 and for all kind of different currency including gold. However you will get a quest at lvl 16 for a free one. You can choose between Man-At-Arms (defender), Cleric (leader) Wizard & Dog (both striker). Additional you can buy for 2 gold a Spellsword (striker) there all common pets. Since the last beta weekend the have lvl range but even if the are white, the cleric and tank still do the job. The removed the uncommon cleric as quest reward from the graveyard line up to lvl 28/29 so don't count on it .
Lockboxes.
You need to buy a Key for it 125 zen or 10 Keys for a discount BUT you can buy them from other players in the Tradehouse.Price range today was 90k Astral Diamonds, price for a auction started at 2!? Astral Diamonds..
You can gamble for the items with a key, from STO drop chance are low as 0.5% or you can buy them for a "fixed"amount from other players in the Tradehouse......
Was really on the fence, timewise just did not have enough of it, with playing the game but now thanks to what I've been reading on this thread I'll jump in a few hours per day to dick around in it ^^ on breaks from Hearts of Iron 3 (currently <.< showing the other balcan states that they may has cores on some of my regions but that don't mean my army will take kindly to theirs).

Oh and just for the record AD&D is also called D&D 2.0e and 2.5e Rule Sets if you actually played D&D like you claimed to have you would know this.
Funny i pulled my old TSR books for AD&D and i don't see 2.0 written any where....
With PnP you can do what ever you wan't your setting, your rules, tweak the mechanics and do what ever you want thats the whole point of it.
I know I'm not. But you try managing multiple swarms after a bottle of whiskey.
"Alright.. Okay. Uhh, which one were you guys attacking? The eladrin wants to attack that other one instead? Alright well this other swarm is dead."
"What?"
"It's just dead. It died. It falls to the ground and it's... It's dead guys, let it go. Or no, it ran away!"
"????"
"All of a sudden, THREE WORGS ERUPT FROM THE BUSHES!"
And that's when I passed out.
Anyways, I liked how Champions did the respec thing. You could buy the respecs with in game currency but it became massively expensive by the time you were in your late 20's so buying a full retcon token (reset both passives/stats/talents and skills I think) was just a heckuva lot more convenient.
I'm largely ambivalent to the whole respec issue however, there was a horrible time that I had in Fallen Earth- wherein there was a lot of weight put into your decisions because you couldn't respec at all. And that game was really really, just nasty grindy and time consuming if you wanted to optimize your character (faction wheel grinding and ap gathering), and you couldn't really look for builds because all the top pvpers were keeping the goods to themselves. But then the devs eventually tossed in partial respecs and they were at least kind enough to give full respecs everytime they mucked around with the skills- I hope at the very least, that PWE/Cryptic will do that for us, would be so nice!
All this anti liberal respeccing sentiment feels like more tired griping from the "oldschool" peanut gallery. Yeah, yeah, and you had to walk up both ways to the boss raid in the snow with the wolves gnawing at your heels and when you got back to town your leader beat you with a switch and you thanked him for it. What-Ever.

Some weight to your decisions is kind of refreshing.
No, I just won't give them a dime. For anything. Character building and learning shouldn't have a price tag. I was excited about this game but I see it's another cash grab. I hope you enjoy it.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
You do get this is a F2P game, so please tell me how they will make money to fund game without a cash shop? If people want to spend $50 dollars on a mount who the heck cares I know I don't. No one is forcing you to play the game or if you choose to play buy anything from the CS. The items from the cash shop do not stop you from levelling or enjoying the foundry.

or people are just too lazy to roll another character to experiment with other builds.
never played NW but $5 seems a resonable price for re-speccing. it's a free game and they need to make money somehow. if you want to re-spec, re-roll. or cough up a few dollars.
Nods Head.
Played: UO, DAoC, Shadowbane, DDO, LOTRO, Aion, Rift, TERA, ESO
Sampled: WoW, AoC, GW2, Vanguard, Neverwinter
Playing: FF XIV

These sir's be wise

Good were the days pre-2004 in the MMO-genre.
One super succesful game came along and ruined the entire genre by being too succesful
They're a matter of basic functionality these days, and should be treated as such.
thank you so much, now i have an overview of it.. cheers!!!
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.
Just say no with your wallet people.

For the OP.
Bags:
Funny i pulled my old TSR books for AD&D and i don't see 2.0 written any where....
