Played this a while back and loved the feel...then found out that the owpvp was not happening. Have they made changes and are they planning to add a pvp server for open world?

To my knowledge the devs have never said that OWPVP was not going to happen. It is however something that is planned "down the road". You can see for yourself on the Development Timeline here: http://www.firefallthegame.com/game/
You will have to scroll down a bit to check it out.

Balin, how's Incog on LoT? Abandoned on MT! Bastards.
Anyways, Firefall has always been junk. I was in beta almost from the start and they honestly have no clue what they're doing in terms of PvP. The movement system is terrible, it took forever for them to realize that balancing classes in a PvP scenario AND be a competitive eSport is utterly impossible. Some steps were taken recently, but I haven't tried the new patch. I've talked to a few people, they say it's even worse now.
If you're a fan of FPS games like me, I wouldn't even worry about the game.

What they've done is lock the classes for pvp(so that you can't change any of the weapons etc) and make them much more generic.
You mean made an attempt at balancing them? Don't misunderstand me, the idea of making PvP only deal with specific load outs is how you make a successful skill-based FPS game... or at least one of the steps. That was a GOOD move on their part. Their problems lie far deeper than just balance issues.
The movement system is faulty from the ground up. Low skill ceiling, everyone can become a nice boring mediocre.
If firefall was another game( a pvp fps like planetside or apb maybe) with this idea in from the beginning I'd agree. From what little I've seens firefall isn't much of a pvp game. The characters don't move very fast and are easy to hit(even I could do it) so outside of the use of jumpjets(and u used the frame best suited to this) I haven't seen any real skill used and i can't see how this patch has really changed that( am on the eu server and not enough ppl there to find out). From what I've seen firefall has been touted as more of a pve game anyway and for me(and others) this change is bad in that respect as there is effectively no more character advancement and no choices to be made, all you do now is look up which frame has the best weapon in your chosen class and either mob grind for a month or so (or buy it for rl cash), maybe grind it for some stat increases for another month or so and then go and play something better.
Got to try pvp today(felt obliged) and not very different than it was before. The removal of crafted gear seems to have made it a little faster but a bit more imbalanced as I can no longer comensate for a frames shortcomings. But not much of a pvper myself(which is why i tried firefall in the first place) so maybe with more practice I'd get a bit better but using the right frame is still very important. But without any reward or consequence for pvp it's just zerg and blast away and 1 day is enough for me.
(Upcoming Feature, Q2 2013) Our custom servers and graphic engines are designed to allow for combat between a thousand players at once. Firefall will feature additional races and new territories designed to host massive player vs. player battles in the open world.
The game is still under heavy development.
They just changed the whole Tier system as well as the whole crafting system.
OwPvP is not even in yet, just some instanced esport maps.
They follow the line and that says its the PvE content, thats going actually, and they pump in.
When thats done, there is a Chosen war to implement (tests seem to be done successfull, we had A LOT Chosen before the PvE stuff was exploding) as well as episodic campaigns.
Then its the owPvP, so it will need some more time, im not sure if they can hold q2/13 but they have been on their line since im in CB, nearly a year or something.
The game is growing and i enjoy to see it getting better and better.
Its just a real Beta, even if we have public beta already ... so the client says ^^
Im looking forward as the PvP in FF is enjoyable while owPvP needs propably new races or reasons to fight each other.
im sorry , but have you actually played any of those maps ? not trying to be rude , but those map can not be considered esport. how can you say that when even the game developers dont consider them competitive ? i understand you are trying to defend a game you like , but saying something like this is just to much .
heres a fun quote from a community manager :
" The current maps are like playing football at a park with friends. The ground is lumpy. The end zones are made from red plastic cups and the yard lines are marked by the tallest person's natural stride. They are not meant to be professional-quality competitive maps.
We are working on eSports-level maps that will be mirrored with perfectly symmetrical features. These are meant to be the arenas that are comparable to Centurylink Field or the Superdome. The perfection that is required for true masters of competition.
Playing football in the park is still fun. Try taking it less seriously. "
also keep in mind that even the current imbalanced maps we have now have not yet been updated to the new frames , weapons and abilities wich makes them even more "esport competitive maps"

I think the owpvp is likely to be along the lines of army(guild) vs army, if it ever happens.
But to be honest if I was looking for a pvp mmo firefall would now be bottom of the list, evreything else seems a mutch better option.
