when it comes to MMO events, which kind of event do you guys like the most? there are the regular passives like the exp/drop rate events, mall sale events for the cashers, and there are also those ones like the art contests and the like. my personal favorite is the interactive in-game events where GMs will be the one facilitating. for example, boss invasion event or the last man standing PvP event which is really awesome as sometimes the reward will be the GM themselves becoming your pet for a day
how bout you guys? what was the best event you ever experienced in your favorite MMO?

The best one so far for me was deathcon a few years back on runescape. In runescape major holidays (in this case halloween) the mods crank out huge events for in game (well...sometimes they are 'not as good as last year' or not as great as they had hoped. but generally they are pretty fun).
And, deathcon was my favorite. Death (the grim reaper himself) was throwing a huge halloween party/expo and needed some help getting things ready. Several NPC's working under death had a few arrends or things that needed to be repaired (fixed with parts or put in the correct sequential order). The big issue (if I recall correctly) was that in trying to prepare for the party he cleaned up some spider webs around his mansion... this ticked off the spider queen who then refused to leave his bathtub until appeased. this led to adventures with a new companion (Eek the spider) and by the end of it all a huge dance party on the roof of deaths mansion, from which party goers walked away with several souvenirs (such as a deathcon backstage pass and T-shirt, as well as Eek as a pet, and a mask that switched between the classical comedy and tragedy expressions which people who already had the full mime costume with it's emotes really enjoyed).
I think i am blending in memory perhaps two seperate halloween events (like one year the spider stuff andf the next year a sort of sequel?)...but even aside from that I have always found holloween holiday events to be very entertaining. I rememeber one year we got skeleton outfits and pumkin heads, and another year there was a dungeon based ghost busters spoof complete with outfits and ecto-plasma, backpack, vacum thingies.
Last year was not so great ( i didn't really like the outfits, personally)... just some ghost hunting and choosing to side with an old jagex mod or a newb one (the loosing side mod had to spend the night alone in a local to them, reputed to be very creepy, haunted house).
In any case holidays in runescape are usually really fun, and halloween events are my favorite in that game.
I would say that the events where GM's participate are the best hands down, problem I see in these next gen MMO's is the abcense of any accept in these new fangled cash grab so called free games where they might hire a third world country man too spam the more money you spend the more you might get lucky type nonsence

My old guild in WoW annually or bi-annually ran an event called "The running of the Bulls".
All guild members were invited to meet at thunderbluff with a newly created level 1 Tauren for this event. The event was a running race from TB to ratchet where you had to get a boat to take you to Stranglethorn Vale. From there you had to run through another couple of zones to get to Stormwind and the winner was the first one to run through the first gate.
We usually had a few officers officiate and ride/fly to observe and make sure no-one cheated. The guild offered prizes of gold and or guild bank items and everyone had a great laugh over vent. Our record was just over 80 bulls running in one event and you could imagine the massacre as we all raced across the plains, fields and jungles pulling everything from miles around killing us.
As most Wow players know people love to PvP practise outside the gates of SW so I would always imagine the look on the Alliance players faces when they saw a host of us level 1 Tauren trying to get into SW like Lambs (or bulls in this case) to the slaughter. I still laugh thinking about it now. Best event EVER!
i agree. GM events sure are fun
when i was playing Ragnarok Online before, we had this event where the GM was eaten alive by Maya and players will have to kill Maya to rescue the GM. player who got the MVP status from killing Maya had him/her the priviledge of GM's company for a day, serving the player as his/her pet, using his GM powers and skills (albeit limited) as per the player's request.
recently, we had this event in Requiem: Memento Mori where a fuzzy box respawns (at random) and players would have to wait for announcement where the box will spawn. when the box gets opened, a random raid boss will spawn from it, cutting players down. it was fun watching the boss get mobbed while other players gets cut down as the raid boss rages on. sure was a pretty funny experience.
Classic: Ultima Online GMs going crazy and spawning irrational odds on their Test Server
Modern: I'd have to call it a tie, Rift's rifts and Guild Wars 2's dragon lieutenants.
Failure: [CENSORED DUE TO NDA] features events similar to that of the typical Guild Wars 2 dynamic event that doesn't involve 'world bosses'; instead they end in 'unique' spawns which the player can tame (or they just end in a lack luster manner with little to no reward). However, since the events are so frequent, the 'unique' factor loses it's luster when everyone and their mother has the identical spawn tamed.
