Terrible news, the more I see MMO's going free to play the more I won't be playing MMO's. Remember when you would pay $15 dollars a month and have all the content included. Now you have free to play games that make you purchase more bags, buy mounts, etc.
It would be fine if they don't force you to buy stuff, but as the future progresses they will try to milk MMO players more and more. I don't think this is good for the MMO genre to head in this direction and I hope it doesn't fully go that way.
I would give you a guest pass to SWOTR, but then I wouldn't be able to find a way to live with myself afterwards....
They must have heard about the absolute dome romping that Never Winter is doing on people that think they're playing for "free". We just started playing Rift again, after the bad taste NW left. Wonder how they're going to compensate people that have paid for a years sub?
LOL well actually players prefer good games.. but free will do if a good game is not available haha j/k
I realize you're joking, but there may be an element of truth in this. How many times have we heard "It wasn't worth the subscription" when discussion about F2P conversion of other games has taken place?
If there's a large fringe who would like a game given F2P access, and a core playerbase who is already P2P, the combination of free and subscription (what I call freemium rather than F2P) seems ideal to build a large playerbase and have 2 forms of monetization.

Unfortunately this is not case. YOU, ME, ... and many prefer GOOD games, but for majority every TOTAL TRASH is great, superb, ... IF it is FREE. This is sad reality. And I'm sure majority of them have enough money for drinks and smoke, but do not have for supporting good game.
To give an example: ZYNGA (King of F2P games) mentioned once that on average one player means 6 dollars yearly revenue ... That's 1.5 dollars per Quarter...
So I calculated that in order to have WOW like revenue, Blizzard would need to gather "150 million players" in F2P format.
Good luck to this sinking industry.
Btw, that means that those so called 1.7 million "new" players in SW TOR generate the awesome amount of ... 2.5 million dollars per quarter or ... 1% of present WOW...
Aside from possibly supporting Blizzards next title with a sub I'm done paying monthly fees for any mmo. As for Rift I bought a CE some time ago & wouldn't mind jumping back on once the f2p is available.
It's a little bit sad but amusing, cause when Rift was P2P it was a very common example for successful p2p mmos, which is why I keep saying why keep making mmos p2p when they usually end up b2p and f2p. Already bad enough 15 dollars is not needed what so ever. To me great mmos can be great with out being P2P, I mean I don't really digg f2p, would prefer more non p2w b2p mmos.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
F2P model ruins mmorpg genre, F2P is not for me, bye!
Bye bye
I dont think Trion will miss you when you are replaced by a million other players.
a million non paying players.

No need because SL already jacked up the exp curve. I couldn't get past level 55 because of the grind. Rift previous to SL didn't feel like that at all.
you were doing it wrong then sir. its stupid easy to level to max now in rift.
Yay i knew it would happen. I really liked Rift it maybe a wow clone but its the best one, and i has tons of content, events and the best class system in any mmo i plan to go back to it.
there is no catch to it i snapped it 2 times allready to get some unrestricted veteran accounts for free in advance since i sold my other accounts, a little tip from me if you dont feel like playing the whole 14 hours just put some exe in the rift folder and rename it to Rift.exe and let it run together with the launcher raptr seems to only check the uptime of the exe and not if its really the game
Saw the announcement and unsubbed. Doubt i will ever return, even with a sub option as you will still need eventually to buy from the CS. It may not start out that way, but time has a way of changing what a company will put in a CS. Most times it's not for the benefit of players.

Is there such a thing as a P2P MMO or a F2P one anymore? With the hybrid revenue models now in use the distinction is blurred.
Without sub games to make the Free bit of F2P stand out, how long before the free players find the net closing in on them?
Agreed Scot, all these converated Western 'F2P' games are actually hybrid models. It just makes marketing easier to use the word 'free' to hook people in.
'Free' is pure spin... they could as easily be described as 'sub games with extended trials and a cash shop' a lot of the time, but the marketing guys don't like talking about money up front. It scares folks off before they have reached the 'sweet spot' of commitment (addiction) that makes them more susceptible to spending.
I would be really interested to see how a lot of these converted titles look if the subs propping them up was removed...
A new trend with these newer mmo's going F2P quickly because their not being built to last anymore. All MMO's have a shelf-life but the newer ones seem to kick the F2P bucket in the matter of under a year.
The older MMO's at least were built to be like worlds and explored with a tight-knit fan communities backing them up which gave reason for monthly subscriptions and long-time player satisfaction and commitment to the product of their choice. The newer ones focus on quick-sales with flashy ads, flimsy daily rewards as content,hand-holding easiness, weak or predictable comfort-zone story-lines, and automatic socialization through dungeon tool-sets instead of having to actually socialize with others to do dungeon-quests or bosses.
The old MMO's that finally go F2P (except the still popular ones due to IP) because of age. The newer mmos are going F2P because of a pre-mature death and they don't have the draw and immersions the older ones had as well as the amount of mmos available expanding on the market.
Either re-paints of WoW, replicas of WoW with new-skin, or potentially good games that fallen short with limitations. Half MMO's out now are not worth an off-the bat monthly subscription fees.
A stall from the mass-production of mmos like a car. It may have had quality parts at one time but when high-demand came the parts got crappy and the product turned into junk due to quick-sales just to get it out there. Similar effects are happening to MMO's. Too many of them, and the quality has gone down the hills. Having more mmos is not bad, the problem is when the quality becomes low that the games turn into a sea of generic titles.

Lot of them would fall flat on their faces without the hybrid subs holding them up and others as cash-shop eaters. Free is indeed just a marketing ploy to lure players in without off-the-bat commitments. In essence some of the meat of the game originally is held back(as well as possible future content) without the addition of more-money added in by the player by prompting them to get the subscription fee.
A true F2P game has no subs. But majority of those rely heavily on micro-transactions through cash-shops or possibly donations (though rarely I have seen any game that relies on donations). Closet model to a reasonable F2P is GW2 (except the B2P part to purchase game, which is minor considering the game has 0 subscription commitments).
These fake F2P rely on mico-transations in cash-shops in addition of drawing in customers to a monthly subscription fee by withholding back content that was originally in the game. Then giving players such content once they get into the subscription.
Remove the hybrid subscription fee model and there'll be some weak games out there that wouldn't last long without it(except for jacking up the cash-shop prices possibly).

And you know that how? if anything the conversion to F2P model has shown in past that games rake in more profit because these so called 'non paying players" don't mind making contribution to cash shops.

Free to Play is only an illusion. I think it's just horrible that developers are going in this direction. And just as bad that players put up with it.
I'm still waiting for a great MMO.
