Putting Neverwinter in front of SWTOR is a bit ridiculous, i find NW fun but they cannot be compared in terms of quality since Bioware's title is miles ahead.
If you go buy a list of MMOs that are still active right now, only using latest expansions, and no game under 10 votes based on user score on metacritic-
1. GW1 - EoN 8.5
2. LOTRO: RoR 8.4
3. The Secret World 8.2
4. GW2 8.0
5. RIFT:Storm Legion 7.9
6. WAR 7.9
7. Dungeon Fighter Online - 7.6
That is about as close to a accurate list based on "real" gamer votes as you will find.
Hopefully it helps illustrate how silly this entire thread is.
I REALLLLLY hate to admit it, but if this site includes games like WoT as MMOs, then I agree WoT is a massive success. Money and player base they are massive. I, however, do not think any game that lacks a persistent world is a true MMO. It may be my opinion, but it's the way I see it. I would love to see them launch a WoT that had one.
However, since MMORPG list the game as an MMO, and they are taking older games, then without debate... at least a #3 rank is very valid.
Take your WOW, RIFT and other floaters and please flush. I want to try WS (push that baby out). However..... /sigh I watched a vid on YouTube yesterday that made me sad. They will have arrows and highlighted areas for quests...... You idiot dev... destroyed the exploration again.
All of these MMO's are relevant and have a quality that can move the genre forward in certain ways so I can understand your choices except for SWTOR, I mean seriously, this game borrows heavily from other MMO's and does a terrible job overall of trying to make a new game, it is a failure of a copycat game and should be treated as such, replace SWTOR with Aion and the list would make more sense as far as creativity or genre setting standards are concerned.

I find it funny when folks bash 1 themepark, over another. Isn't that like saying 1 Direction is SOOOOOOO much better than Backstreet Boys? Fans lol, got to love them and their piles of cash that drive countless variations of the same thing, to be brought out and claimed to be "new".
List seem liable to me, could be worse. Still tons of the year to go through and I believe we may see a darkhorse make a rise. By darkhorse I mean DarkFall:UW.
IMO, since we are doing best MMO's that released content updates (or were released) in 2013,
My picks of would be...
7. Neverwinter
6. The Secret World
5. Rift
4. TERA: Rising
3. Star Wars the Old Republic
2. Guild Wars 2
1. World of Warcraft
However, although my list was partially done by sales for the year,
I personally dont believe SWToR, or GW2 should've made it on MMORPG's list since...
THERES LACK OF END GAME!
The best thing about GW2 is that its not the same damn thing as every other game. And you have the option to WvW anytime you like. You want to go "Raid" for hours hoping to get that one piece of equpiment fine thats you.But don't run your mouth when you have no idea what your talking about. And Defiance may be fun is short bursts, but the lack of content is sad. And seeing how WoW makes your #1 slot shows your another WoW princess crying over GW2. IMO of course

I think SW:TOR should be on that list.
It should be the same list. Just imagine the outcry after that.
This is about what games are giving their players something new and fresh. WoW is essentially treading water, and doing little to attract new players even if they are doing a spectacular job of retaining their existing ones. As such, in this particular list, not only is WoW not number 1, but it there are plenty of reasons for it not be included at all. This doesn't mean that WoW is a bad game by any means, just that it isn't going to automatically show up on every list made about MMOs simply because of it's sheer size.
I think GW2 is far and above better than any other MMO. It has actually innovated in gameplay and polish terms, and puts other MMOs like TOR, WOW, TSW etc to shame in both graphics and gameplay.
TSW is rather underappreciated. It's rough around the edges, but its lore is genuinely new and refreshing, and it has a lot of great discovery moments.
EVE is fantastic in its own incredibly nerdy spreadsheet-y way.
WoW is old, ugly and dull - only losers and no-lifers even play that game any more.
Neverwinter is a bit of a surprise, but the foundry is truly something we should encourage, even if the game overall isn't all that. It's still a step ahead for MMOs as a genre to have player-created content, like a MMO version of Skyrim Nexus.
Originally posted by Lunarpac One of the issues with GW2 is that it's barely a multiplayer game. It's more of a singleplayer game that you happen to play alongside some other people that you never really care about.
SWTOR is definitely one of the best MMOs on the market. The Best in my opinion
Agree fully. :-) Never enjoyed so much in my life with any game of any kind, ok, maybe Wow. Actually have hard times to choose which one is better, but for sure Swtor have much better overall well known lore. Watched as kid first movie while never heard about wow lore until started to play. Great games both, top of the top.

AHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I'm crying with laughter.
Seriously, I like the list. I would just have put Tera in AOWs spot then moved everything down.
Articles with lists have to be the most trolled ever. lol

Shitty list, as always on mmorpg.com. Those are true winners:
1. EVE Online (always was and still ahead of its time. The only AAA quality sandbox, MMORPG as it should be).
2. TSW (the best MMORPG in many departments: story, characters, setting, character development, voiceovers, graphics, atmosphere, quests)
3. WoW (ultimate theme park, has everything for everyone)
4. Age of Wushu (most unique MMORPG with best PvP system in ages. Amazing game overal, only weak point is PvE)
5. Tie between TERA, AoC, Vanguard and LoTRO
Neverwinter is disaster and doesnt deserve to be in top 10. SWToR is boring bland clone, same as RIFT. GW2... boring and disappointing.
EVE should not be number one and there are really not new players playing it - they are the same people that are obsessed with the game.
While SWTOR is nowhere near as bad as people like to say it is, WoW, EQ2, LOTRO and Rift are all quite superior to it.
Just because a game is newer doesnt mean its better. I enjoy neverwinter, but its not as top 10 MMORPG. #1 MMORPG released in 2013? sure.
GW2
EvE
EQ2
WoW
LOTRO
I know i have three traditional theme parks on there, but they offer the best overall package especially over the theme park chosen on the list)
A game like TSW is close, but the combat isnt good and it just doesnt feel as complete as the 5 games on my list.
I think SW:TOR should be on that list.

Full Loot brings meaning to a game.

Pretty fair list.

If its about giving gamers something new and fresh
Why is swtor on the list, its just a very bad wow in space
I guess NWN can be taken off the list.

Guild wars 2 at the top, what does that make Guild Wars 1=Top+
Half of SWTOR is in the list , the other half "the space game" is at the bottom
Eve #1 for niche game, if you don't like space it sucks big time
TSW if you are into story this is KING
