While 2013 has seen its share of "good things" in the MMO world (which we profiled in The List last week!), it's also seen some games that seem to represent the exact opposite side of the coin. Which MMOs are we speaking of? You'll have to read (and watch!) The List to find out. Do you agree or disagree with our choices? Let us know in the comments.
Last week, we re-ignited our List column with a very divisive topic: the Best MMOs of 2013... so far. While quite a few folks didn’t quite get that the list was a countdown of the games that are having a stellar year (as opposed to an end-all be-all list of the best games EVER), it was still fun to see who agreed and who disagreed... and who flipped their lids and called for my head on a platter. Ah, opinions. They sure are fun. Well, hopefully this week’s list strikes a similar chord. The selected titles will most likely be games that came out this year, but can include titles that came out in previous years if the game in question is having a particularly rough go of things since January 1st.

HEYYYY.. scarlet blade is awesome
Its boring for me but watching those boobs and ass everywhere makes up for it

My Review Manifesto
Follow me on Twitter if you dare.
I kind of did not believe you guys, when you said in the Best MMO list, that you would make a worst mmo list.
This took me by surprise.
Anyway, this is a good list, and I believe that the contenders are placed properly.
I'm siding with Rob on that one
"You are all going to poop yourselves." BillMurphy
"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone."
"Just look at the ridiculous ads that have been on this site since the game went into open beta."
So MMORPG.com is willing to take advertisement revenue from a game, which basically shows soft anime porn, with ads all over the site for weeks, and then come on here in an article and essentially call the game out for what it is. Double standards?
'2.) Scarlet Blade
Our review is still forthcoming on Scarlet Blade, but we’re putting it on this list because well... even if the game was a stunning achievement of MMO design and depth, we’d still find it shockingly and face-palmingly shallow in its audacious attempt at gaining players by appealing to the hentai-lover in us all... if there is a such a thing.'
I find this a silly reason to put this game on a 'worst MMO' list. Whether you like the sexualised design or not, it is still just personal preference. Not to mention the lame contradiction in the underlined part.
But I guess it is the political correct reaction to such a game I think there are two signs of immaturity. One that makes your jaw drop at pixelated boobs as if you haven't seen them before and one that makes you react as if you are so called 'better' then that (while watching porn if you are alone and think no one is watching ). So hypocrite.
Why can't you just review a game on its own merits. Look at what the devs are trying to achieve and review it based on that.
Scarlet Blade I don't think is the worst, but it sure as hell is shameful and doesn't deserve attention because of it. Honestly I think it just wants attention so bad, it should be left off lists completely since all it wants is to be seen more then anything. If they weren't so blatant in what they were doing, people could consider it a decent game, not stunning but decent.
Come on now, its like giving attention to a trouble making kid. You know they are doing it for attention, purposely being bad so you pay attention, don't give them the attention.
That's exactly the thought that ran through my mind when reading this. I thought that maybe the people writing isn't the same people deciding what ads should be running on the site though.
I'm also siding with this.
This list apparently doesn't take into account a number of categories that should be added. Categories such as - Games with the biggest budget yet failed -
Example: I'd put a failed MMORPG with a 300million dollar budget, A hard to screw up pre-arranged title, and enough resources at its disposal to make any company jealous before any of the titles you listed above.
Great list.
Bill, about the shameless rip-offs of IP. There is a book by Max Brooks called World War Z....

Maybe DayZ stole a thing or two out of here, e.g. The name and zombie stuff? it was written in 2006 BTW.
+1
Beside that it's a decent list. A bit strange that SB is again noted by the design and the ads, while it could take the 2nd place rightfully on its own because of the mediocre, a dime a dozen game design - which can't even deliver properly. Actually it fits perfectly to the description under AF: "It’s one in a long line of incredibly easy, generic, ugly, and copycat MMOs to be released since 2004 broke the market wide open", just with boobs.
Poor Wizardry on the 5th place... it could've been a nice game with a better design. And coding. And... <the list goes on and on>
Why yes. This site does have to be funded somehow.
No worries, The F2P Supporters PAC and Phreedum For Boobies PACs should be along shortly.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
the difference is that it was initially just a mod, a private labor of love, and not intended to make revenue. the warz on the other hand...
Actually this has been confirmed by staff, the team managing the business side has nothing to do with the editorial content, so that does explain the disconnect.

It's not out yet genius, besides that game is more of a ARPG than anything else.
Good list, although i must say that Scarlet Blade is not so utterly terrible, if you get can past the half naked female characters, not very good by any stretch of the imagination but far from being the worst thing on the MMO market right now.
it's likely that no one on this site chooses which ads go up. likely it's a larger advertising agency which provides the ads, and mmorpg.com has o say in the matter.
And Bill has said multiple times that he and the staff don't have control over the adverts. They are managed by the owners of the site.
The only one on the list I have played is Wiz Online. I suppose it deserves it's place on this list.
Good list, thanks for writing it up. I can't disagree with any of it. Should some others have been included instead? I dunno.
I agree about Wizardry. I feel bad for it, being that I loved the SP games. Ah well. It certainly deserves a spot on the wall of shame.
At first glance I was thinking "I'm very surprised Murphy would write anything negative about an mmo".
I'm still surprised.
I do think SWTOR should be on the list too though, lol. Absolute worse mmo I've played in years.

Dark Age of Camelot
Only one of those I tried was Wizardry, way back in closed beta and quickly figured out it wasn't a game I was going to enjoy.
But I'm not playing much of anything these days outside of a free shard old school title so likely I won't have to worry much about playing bad games.

Yeah, but nobody around here seems to believe that. Many think that if the editors and content creators like a game that they don't it must be because there is a payoff somewhere. Of course they will forever ignore the fact that there hasn't been a more advertised game on this that just got placed on the worst games of the year list. "They just weren't paid enough"
