    Please cease existence.

Neverwinter most definitely should be there.  If only from the crowd of D&D fans since that game is an abomination for those D&D fans that followed the game since launch.  Of which most don't even post on the forums anymore and how there was so much chargebacks that PWE made a statement.

The game might be a really good F2P game but for the D&D fans it is a desecration of the beloved IP.

Ironic how they made a statement that it's for D&D fans when it clearly is not and is for the generic MMO powergamer crowd.

Right up there with the likes of Fargo and The Big Lebowski?

If your answer is yes, then this List probably isn't going to sit well with you.

PS, off-topic - What ever happened to late night Cinemax?  Is it still soft-core porn, or has it changed?  Genuinely curious. One would think with the invention of the internet, that little corner of cable is no longer necessary.

    Maybe this works better :

'even if the game was a stunning achievement of MMO design and depth, we’d still find it shockingly and face-palmingly shallow in its audacious attempt at gaining players by appealing to our love for violence',

Which can be said for many games in general. Also very good games.

    Edited for clarification :

My point is that you basically admit that you didn't know at the time of writing whether SB is a good game or not,but used its obvious appeal to a primitive desire as reason to default it as bad game.

No one is really saying it's worthy of best mmo of 2013 ( although some would I'm sure) It's putting a game you've never played on the worst list that doesn't sit well with people who were expecting a serious "review" from a professional. Your attempts to back track out of what you did say ( there's no misinterpreting it )  Isn't helping.

Not back-tracking, explaining the reason for its inclusion.  I've read our staff's previews, talked with our writers who've played it, and all seem to agree: it's schlocky at best, regardless of its veneer.

If you're a fan, I apologize.  But I'll stand by its inclusion here, based merely on what it represents: a cheap, base, gimmick of a hook.

Good list and whoever wants to put swtor on this list has forgotten what the RPG in mmoRPG stands for. Show me any other mmo that lets you Role Play your character as much in the games universe as swtor and I'll by you cookies for a year.

Am I being fair to write that we are experiencing a terrible time in the industry when the worst games of the year seem to be some of  the biggest advertisers on site recently?
  • ThorbrandThorbrand Member Posts: 1,198
Wait Scarlet Blade is the only good MMO to come out this year so far. The rest are crap...Look at what we have been given, half ass games that aren't even up to technology standards from 10yrs ago. Terrible companies today just out to rip the consumer off.
  • TalonsinTalonsin Member EpicPosts: 3,619
Nice to see War Z at the top of this list.  It was/is a terrible game and the developers continue to stick it to those people silly enough to be loyal to it by reducing spawn rates of things that can be purchased in their cash shop.  It is actually very sad to see this kind of outright greed in our industry.

    Too much sarcasm.

If other games are half assed then Scarlet Blade surely is the one that is full assed.

I think our point was that the cheap base gimmick of a hook is besides the point whether it is a good game or not (like you wrote in your article). If it turns out to be a bad game, like you are now suggesting (and not in the article), then that should originally be given as a reason. Because the list is supposed to be about good and bad games. Not about sleazy marketing.

And even if I were a fan, you wouldn't have to apologize for your opinion about anything.

I'd have to disagree with you bill. What makes a game not play worthy isn't whether or not they did execution with the game itself, but lack of worth while things to do. Any mmo could be fun if given the appropriate attention.  If I were to say every mmo is trash I could be lying. The point here is that yes many mmo's today don't quite hit the extremely polished release we'd expect to see. That doesn't mean I can pick and choose which ones are the worst and which ones I choose to spend time in. The only time I comment on any game is when I see something it could have been done differently.

I could list the top 5 most disappointing mmo's of late 2012-2013:

    1)neverwinter

    2.) wizardy

    3)raiderz

    4)sevencore

    5)age of wushu

    not in that order....

but then again I could list the top five "announced" mmo's as well.

But it IS a bad game.  I'm sorry that your 'tool' does the thinking for you, but you need to understand that objectifying individuals (women, men, other) is not a way to profit off a product.  The whole concept of the game is a female only universe, all fighting in near-naked outfits.   Even their mech suits are fully exposed torsos so that the player can see the 1/2 naked woman piloting it....that's no logic in design other than to purposefully make it so to expose the nudity.

If a game is bad based on it's artistic design and character creation design, than that can merit the game being called bad because it's part of the whole game...in fact, it's something that is experienced the whole game.   Combat gameplay, story, and quest style are all only parts of an MMORPG, but not the all encompassing aspects of it.

There are some truly bad games on this list. And as for Scarlet Blade, I'm happy to see that kind of tiresome art openly criticized on a mainstream gaming site. Sexually mature content in games can be great, and really add to the story or the realistic feeling of the world...but only where those things are handled with maturity, and aren't meant to stand in for a lack of actual gameplay. Blow-up dolls in stupid costumes made entirely of ribbon are not what mature gamers want.

As an aside: you wrote "Well, hopefully this week’s list strikes a similar cord." The idiom is actually "strikes a chord." English is my second language and I often get confused by idioms like that, and I appreciate it when people tell me about it. I hope you won't mind a friendly tip.

There are only 4 mmos listed... The War Z isn't an mmo!

  • BurntvetBurntvet Member RarePosts: 3,465
NW definitely earned a place on there... 2 of those 5 I never even heard of, but then, there are so many re-skinned Asian import F2Ps that you could probably do a list of just those. And yeah, TOR probably deserved a dishonorable mention, as well.

yeah, there are worse out there, but WarZ definitely rates a slap, and another and another, you get it.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

This thread actually made me want to try out Scarlet Blade. A site that puts SWTOR on a "best" list probably isn't much to trust anyway.

I agree with the list, would only add Defiance to it.

I never claimed that it was a good game and I agree that it is a cheap marketing tactic. Which should be obvious from my comment you quoted.

But the article didn't give as reason that it is a bad game, just that it uses boobs as hook to pull in players. It even mentioned in the article that he didn't care if it was a good game or not. Which is fine by me, but then don't say that the list is about bad games.

As for the art style, that is just personal preference. If that becomes a reason, then you can call any game bad because you don't like the art style because it hinders you with every aspect of the game, doh.

And please don't give me the 'objectifying individuals' crap.  Most of entertainment is based on that. Just most of the time less obvious as with this title. Unless you want to claim that only pretty people can act/sing. Sex sells and that's it. Or maybe you think that the cartoony look of this game will act as wrong role model for the youth? :p I dare you. If you are really so stupid to ignore the violence adoration and focus only on the boobs.

Oh as a sidenote, your 'tool' doesn't lie.

Maybe DayZ stole a thing or two out of here, e.g. The name and zombie stuff? it was written in 2006 BTW.

Since we are comparing apples to oranges... Maybe the book World War Z is a shameless rip-off of the 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead.

A better comparison of the  DayZ to WarZ rip-off would be: If World War Z was released and suddenly became a massive smash hit worldwide and 4 months later a hastily/poorly written book called "World Conflict Z" is released that the publisher claimed had been in the works for 2+ years even though its story is almost identical to a book released 2 years prior only with zombies.

lol, it seems this site can't win.

People say they are shills and that they take money for good reviews.

Then someone, in an opinion piece, says a game is not only bad but it's one of their heavier advertisers and suddenly people question their veractiy.

    It went down like this:

Scarlet Blade pays for advertising and this is completely separate from what the writers of this site do.

Writer on this site is emancipated from saying that a game is great even though the advertiser, one that has spent a LOT of money I might add, would prefer to get a great review on their game.

The only way one should question this site (in this particular instance) is if, in a week or so a review comes out stating that Scarlet Blade  is the greatest game that has ever been made.

and the caveat to that is that one might acknowledge that different writers have different opinions so one might review a game one way and another might hate it. I'll admit i don't have an answer to that problem as it sends a mixed message.

In any case, this just goes to prove that advertising and the writing are two separate things. Something we as consumers want.

I find this a silly reason to put this game on a 'worst MMO' list. Whether you like the sexualised design or not, it is still just personal preference. Not to mention the lame contradiction in the underlined part.

But I guess it is the political correct reaction to such a game :/ I think there are two signs of immaturity. One that makes your jaw drop at pixelated boobs as if you haven't seen them before and one that makes you react as if you are so called 'better' then that (while watching porn if you are alone and think no one is watching :p ). So hypocrite.

Why can't you just review a game on its own merits. Look at what the devs are trying to achieve and review it based on that.

Um...because obviously the game designers didnt think to just build/sell their game on the merits of the mechanics...
