Be honest

For me the combat is very sluggish. This is no fun for a so called Action combat example.

This game would have been far better with tab targeting combat honestly.

How exactly would tab targeting make this game better IYHO?  It's not the best in terms of action combat (assuming you are comparing it to an actual action game vice other MMO's which have made the same claim in which case I would say NWO does a damn decent job) but I cannot think of a single way that tab targeting would help improve it what so ever.

Combat in this game is one of its definite strengths.

Tab targetting is a thing of the past, and would improve no game which already uses a superior action combat system, imo.

The ssoner we can geta way from boring tab-targeting mouse click abomination, the better.

    Tab-targetting is for dimwits.

Yea, I love the combat in NWO, if it had tab targeting combat, i'd not ever say a single bad word of the game, because i'd have never, ever, EVER tried it.

Its why i won't play GW2, or archage, etc, even though those games have PLENTY going for them...

Like others have said, tab targeting/faceroll/palmmashing keyboard games are of the past. Its time(LONG time) we and the industry moved beyond them.

I think the point the OP was making was that the "action combat" in Neverwinter is so bad, they might as well have just gone with tab-targeting, hotkey combat. Sadly, I have to mostly agree with that. I really wanted to like Neverwinter, but the sluggish combat was one of the major things that completely turned me off to it. It took a while for TERA's action combat to grow on me and on the occasion I play the game I do enjoy it, but even there the implementation barely exceeds the minimum of what an action combat system needs to be fun. IMO, Neverwinter falls far short of TERA combat, which makes it a complete no go for me.

The game has an odd, nostalgic feel so, yeah, a more traditional combat system probably would have served the game much better than what we got. The entire game really feels and looks outdated to me and the "action-y combat" just seems like it was slapped on to try to make it look like the game was keeping up with the times.

Second biggest MMO disappointment of 2013 so far for me and the first biggest is something I'm not allowed to discuss.

The genre is starting to show some progress in breaking out of the stale old MMO mold, which makes games that  look  like something that might have launched five years ago seem even more disappointing.

I only found the combat sucked when there was a lot of players and mobs altogether .  sucked if you were trying to heal someone in that mess .

Indeed, it feels like a true clusterfuck to me at that point.

Oh god no. Are you serious? Combat is the biggest draw to this game. Its fast paced and fun.

You use less skills, but they change based on how you use them. And the class skills feel right. I love it.

Tried to go back to GW2 to get the new flower backpack and the tab target 1-10 felt horrible. Also tried Rift for a bit because I got the free expansion and the supermacro tab targeting was lame. Felt completely meaningless.

Neverwinter has the best combat I have ever played in a MMO. And yes, before the 'hard core' trolls come in, I have played Darkfall, Age of Wushu, Age of Conan and all the other so called hard core combat games.

If you are talking specifically about the animation locks, this feels perfect for PvP, and PvE in general. You can break out of most things with a dodge or a block, but you aren't ice skating around with zero consequence for poor timing (GW2 and TSW) and you aren't rooted for as long as TERA. Control Wizards and Divine Clerics would be so cheap without rooting for spells it isn't funny, and I play both.  They are already super mobile and hard to lock down.

I pretty much thought the combat in this game was absolute crap when i started.

Due to high level streamers on twitch TV i was convinced to try again, and this time stuck to it a little longer and it slowly grew on me.

While It does have It's flaws, i consider it a pretty fun combat system now, though i think It's too bad we get to use so few abilities at a time.

Why? There is only one single target heal for cleric, and its terrible. You should pretty much never use it.  The best cleric skills all heal in an AE or based on damage to a mob.

Edit: To give you more clarity on what you should be using. I use Astral Shield, Forgemaster Flame and Bastion of Health for heavy healing.  Astral Shield is a ground placed AE that heals and reduces damage. Forgemaster Flame is a debuff / dot on a mob that does significant healing when you are in divine mode and Bastion of Health is a big AE heal that is instant cast when you are in divine mode. For easier dungeons I often swap Bastion of Health for Divine Glow (debuff to mobs, buff to group).  You should not be single target healing at all.  The main thing as a Divine Cleric is to keep building your super meter so you can keep using the better versions of these skills as they come off cooldown.

Hope that helps with your healing.

So more so for you combat is bad because it does not have tab targetting? No offense but action combat just isn't for you if tab targetting is a need. Not really going to make a great judge on it if your against it. Just like I'm not big/good at RTS so I don't feel I have the right to judge it, I think you lack the right to judge a game since your not into stuff lacking tab target.

^   ^   ^ What Evil said. Honestly, the game feels pretty smooth and for pvp as well. I like the set up for different skill selection and have finally just started experimenting with it! =)  I'll keep trying to get as much of it as I can freely because I enjoy the combat so much.

I shared mine a few times since beta, and it's pretty much the same as yours - though I'd use clunky instead of sluggish :)

For me, combat is one of the least important apect of a game, if it doesn't hinder my gameplay I don't mind whether it's the most regular tab-target or a DCUO-like action fest. NW's semi tab-target clunkiness was the first time where I felt I can't control my character directly. (for example, 2 mobs in front of me, I hit the left one, turn to the other, hit, and my character hit the left one again in a funny, under-his-armpit move, then the highlight switch to the right one... as I said, semi tab-target, and clunky. It's a mouse-aimed game supposedly...)

So I agree, it would've been better with a little push in either direction (CO-style combat, or a better mouse-aimed action combat with a better dodge mechanics as well). I still like the game and play it quite often, but I tend to avoid combat if I can :)

Playing solo or with one other person I quite enjoy the combat. Except when my "aiming cone" decides that I actually want to hit the target just left of my cursor, because there's "more of that target" in the auto-targeting area.

However, the "auto-targeting" makes hitting individual targets in a furball very frustrating and well-nigh impossible. AoE rules in dungeons and skirmishes, skill is less important.

I guess it's an inevitable result of the "everyone does everything" modern MMO combat style. Everyone just dumps max DPS in the general direction of the target, and because there's no specialised healing class, the heals are all AoE or part of each character's own skills. Accurate aiming is no longer required, just spam and "dodging".

I like the combat. Action based combat is definitely better then the rest. It took me a while but it was a transition for me from the standard mouse arrow to the target reticle.
  • shadylurkershadylurker Member Posts: 47

It's the only reason to play the game.  I won't play/can't stand tab targeting anymore.    If it takes me longer than 10 seconds to down a regular mob I'm not playing that game.

I liked the pve in age of conan because you could beat down a mass of mobs, but putting in a password with the keyboard to use a skill was stupid.  I liked the mouse combos of DC Universe, but  I like Neverwinters the most.  More control = more fun

The only thing that sucks is the cone of shame, but it is also nice when there is a ton of mobs.

Basically, I don't really like the game, I just like the combat.  I strongly dislike instance hopping.  If it was open world It would be one of the greatest games.

Before I played in the closed beta, I didn't think I would like the combat.  I haven't played an "action-based" combat mmo that I liked, but Neverwinter does a good job with it.  It's not so fast paced that you have no clue what you're doing.  There's no annoying combos that with one wrong click dooms your moves until you can get the combo right.  There's not much lag in the combat either.

I actually love tab-targeting combat and almost every mmo I've played and stuck with has been tab-targeting.  Neverwinter will be my first action combat that I'll stick with for the time being.  I might leave if ESO or Wildstar is good, or I might leave Rift, which I've played since beta.

I actually can't stand melee combat in action MMO's when I'm rooted to the ground and stuck in animation locks.  This was my biggest issue with this game and TERA.  I prefer this free form combat over tab targeting but it feels clunky when it's done in this fashion.  That's just my personal preference though.

As a cleric I didn't like the combat mechanics, it was too much about aoe and running around with mobs chasing you.

Then I switched to control wizards and that was a much more fun class to play. Even if it is paced combat, as a control wizard it got very tactical suddenly. You can actually "control" mobs in combat, and You have an active role to play, namely to protect others in various ways.

Combat is a bit sluggish if You think about how responsive it is and your ability to avoid every attack. The amount of adds, spawns and stuff happening is kind of silly, so You just try to avoid the worst of it. If you were to completely avoid all attacks You would never kill anything, so its a tradeoff .. do enough damage, but not take too much yourself.

One thing that annoy me is that I constantly hit the wrong target, the damage debuff hits an add that is dead in 0.2 seconds instead of the boss, your high damage spells the same, your targeted heals dont connect because a mob is between you and a player or you hit a player with full health who passes infront of you. Same for attacks failing because a player was in the way of a mob.. what, that mob were not pushed away from the cleric, now I have to check if the skill is on cooldown or it was just not triggered.

On less chaotic fights, the combat shines much more, and roles appear from out under the paced combat. And I see how much more interesting and well working Neverwinter combat is compared to GW2 for example. Neverwinter is the most interesting action based combat I have tried, but I would still take targeted combat with a slower pace and more tactical aspects any day.

I like it although I'm not a very skilled player so I struggle as a cleric to solo groups even with my companion. I also enjoy tab target combat, I've enjoyed many a tab-games.

dont even have to aim...doesnt look like action combat to me

I find it boring personally.  No real thought.  I have yet to find a "action combat" game that does not seem like a game I was playing back in the 90's on a console.  I see less strategy in them compared to Tab games.
