what are your biggest gripes with getting into a mmo ?

slygamer1979slygamer1979 Member UncommonPosts: 101

if its not the character creation then its getting the name that i want those would be what kill me on mmo's.

also if i haven't played a mmo in awhile and i come back and reload my account and find old characters but i have no memory of where i left off usually i pawn off all items and give the items or gold to a new character.

start from scratch of course after awhile playing i might remember most of the content and what to do and what i'll be expected to do end game and this is going to make or break my motivation overall if i remember the mmo and its end game bores me to death i'll probably quit sooner then later.

I am pretty similar with regards to the "old characters" on accounts that I have not logged into for awhile. I just booted up SW:TOR again after about 6 months. I deleted my Jedi Consular and made a brand new one so I could play from the beginning.

As far as character creation goes, I don't place a lot emphasis on that. If it is good, I like the game better. If it is truly terrible, I may not stay long in the game.

Naming is another iffy situation for me. With F2P, I don't expect too much as there are millions of accounts created for free and good names go fast. Luckily, I can (most of the time) come up with a good mix of letters to create an interesting name :)

What is more important for me is the start after my character is created. The beginning area has to be interesting for me. I hope to learn about the game and get some practice using my skills and abilities. I want to be "wow'd" by the setting and world around me. That does not mean the latest graphics. I mean it has to "fit", in my opinion.

If that starter area does not grab me, I won't go far with the game. If it is not fun, why keep playing?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Every MMO I ever played, I start by running around the new player area. I kill 10 or 20 things. I can get a good idea from that if they will let me level that way and how long it will take, or if I need to do subway system quest lines.

I look for gathering nodes, I pay close attention to loot, see how much is vendor trash. I look for the sand box in it. If I can't just log in and run around, prepare crafting and progress, I know it's going to be short lived. Most games now have no crafting. They have a side job aspect that allows people to generate their own gear but they don't have crafting. The warrior that likes to make weapons or the Magician that cooks in their spare time. Those things turn me off the game immediately.

I recognise the problem from needing to start a new character at returning,,... Because playing a character requires a lot of automation, doing things without thinking.  And that requires training.

Currently there are 3 things that turn me off and prevent me from getting intoo MMo´s.

    - Character animations are cluncky

    - Stories and quests that have no immersion

    - Combat is less fun

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

My gripe is that I don't want to invest time or money on an mmo wondering if the game is any good, whether it will remain good and maintain quality support and content additions, and remain respectable with their sales.

I spent years coping with bad games and more hoping good games would achieve more... I just don't have much hope left for online gaming.

If it's getting back to an a previous mmo, it's the changes made and how it'll affect me gameplay. Need to releran stuff or will be like riding a bike.

New mmo's? It'll be the community. How helpful they are to newbies, first dungeons/instances (how they act, elitists or friendly). That can really turn me off a game.

Integrated voice chat is a deal breaker for me.

My new gripe is i just checked on City of Heroes and the game is shutting down so i wanna know if i could get a refund for the booster packs for costumes and stuff and the expansion because that is just bullshit i buy it and awhile later i can't use it anymore those backs are like i think $10 each and the expansion was like 30-40 so i just lost alot of friggin money goddamnit.

this is why i'm not sure about investing anymore money into mmo's and paying for anything besides a monthly fee or purchase of the game because you lose alot more money buying into a game that shutting down.

Depending on why I chose to play the game many things are deal breakers.

    Universal:

Combat - The biggest thing for me is if I really enjoy the feel of the combat. It's the biggest part of nearly every MMORPG so if it sucks you always feel like you're dealing with it instead of enjoying it.

Animation - Games need to both balance animations so they aren't over the top and/or frequent, but also have some truly clever ones as well. I personally love Necromancers and S&B Tanks, so if a game has great undead summoning animations or some satisfying shield slams then it will hook me for awhile.

    PvE:

Story - Nowadays I love deep stories with numerous plotlines, so I usually wait and see if games develop more than one big plotline. If they don't, well I'm gone.

Setting - I love dark fantasy, high fantasy is good but if it's a dark world I'll sit and discover it.

Immersion - This goes along with Story, but I also want to refer to the mechanics of PvE. I've been playing the same typical MMORPG content for years and if that stuff is in the starter zone I usually just log off. I like when games change up their PvE and do things differently.

    PvP:

Ability to - If my character is not allowed to PvP right from the start, it's very hard to even look at the game.

Open World - If the action is restricted to instanced PvP then I leave after a few matches.

Creativity - If there isn't anything particularly creative about the PvP then there is no point playing it.

Whenever I fire up a new MMO or single player game, I try to get a feel for the controls first and foremost. After that, the animations. I simply can't play if I don't feel the controls flow, or the animations are smooth.

Names have never been that big of a deal for me. If I can't get the one I want, I'll just pester my GF for a good name, or use the random generator xD

Loading screens every time I move from area to area. I hate that stuff.

Neverwinter had way to many loading screen times. Got really annoying fast.

Also if quests are the same run of the mill kill, fetch, deliver formula. I like to see a bit of thought went into them and not just writing of quest text.

MMORPG Gamers/Developers need a reality check!

My biggest gripes during the learning process:

    - Information is too easily accessible in game / Too much automation

    - Being in the "fish bowl" for more than 30 minutes

    - Not being able to find the way out of the "fish bowl" without running for 10 minutes

    - Getting PvPed in zones that are pre-endgame

    Returning to an existing game:

    - Logged out before quitting next to a world boss spawn point / in a dangerous zone only to die immediately

    - Forgetting my password

    - Forgetting my secondary password

I played WoW up until WotLK, played RoM for 2 years and now Rift.
I am F2P player. I support games when I feel they deserve my money and I want the items enough.
I don't troll, and I don't take kindly to trolls.
