After all, the gaming companies have to make money to survive. They are not charities.
And yet you support F2P, against a monthly fee, and this is evolving to you............lol. Its funny when the F2P crowd uses that in the same sentence as free Game company has to make money, but it better not charge me a fee............. and you call me an elitist?

Rift did this very thing and those servers went away because they didn't work. This idea won't work either.
50$ a month and it is still the cheapest kind of entertainment You can buy. I would pay for live GM events, 1000 of me * 10$ extra a month = enough to hire a person or more to only do GM events full time. 25$ a month for an awesome game experience is nothing, and it will keep away some tro.. err less dedicated players aswell.

Lucky for us we aren't subbing to Rift, we're subbing to a brand new EQN.

Cant believe I'm actually saying this, but Blizzard is one of the onlu companies to do Cash Shop right.. Strictly Vanity Items.. Mounts, pets and such.
That's cool - I left before WoW had a cash shop, but assuming the mounts are not like ultraspeed (aka Vanguard, EQ2), then that is perfect example of what a cash shop should be!
I think you missed the point of the original server idea by SOE.It was not to have a premium only,it was a CASH SHOP accepted server as compared to a non accepted one.
Also imo their intention was to never test it,their intention was to get their foot in the door with full intention on going cash shop.
Also time has nothing to do with premium nor does the term HARDCORE.You have a game,it is designed to be played a certain way,you either play the game or you don't.If you start monetising every single aspect, then you are no longer playing "THE GAME".In that case why bother?
The whole premise or gimmick behind this design was to get MORE money from players,it was never had any intention to be a fair system. They figure they could get money out of players, then eventually draw them into a sub fee. That way instead of just a sub fee they got extra money out of you. Then along the way they figured there are people willing to spend above and beyond,so why not find ways to get extra out of those players as well.
The whole idea is to still build a game, but if you want to play the whole game as intended you have to spend more.

Sure, some of you guys spend 10 bucks a month on entertainment, no one's knocking you. But, and this is the reason for the thread, there are enough of us, especially now, who would pay a little more for a better experience on a server. I'd gladly pay 300 bucks for 6 months pf premium service at a time on a server that's 1,000 or less players. One where there's an on staff dm who creates specific content just for that server. Sure we'd get all the regular stuff but it's that little extra that makes it worth it, like going to a place that has a bathroom attendant. .
I find it funny that so many of you p2p people think your $15 is big money to a game company and people who play f2p games are all cheap and spend nothing.
If you knew anything about f2p games you'd know your special little premium server would make the companies less money per player if you looked at the avg.
free to play make more money because players have the ability to spend more that $15 a month. I know this is hard for you guys that buy your self worth with that $15 but you're dinosaurs in the industry. Why would they go after your $15 when the people you all like to look down on are earning them more money.

It has nothing to do with cost, MMORPG's are simply not worth a box fee plus subscription.
millions of mmo players disagree with you. my time is not worth playing a gimped f2p version of the game i want to play, just because its free.
people are cheap and don't want to pay for anything, i think every f2p model should be extremely restricted, unless its a low budget crappy mmo or something truly not worth paying for.

Theres an easy solution to F2P that Everquest 2 started off with: Make servers that are for Premium Subscribers only. If premium players want to play with their F2P friends make plenty of open servers for this situation, but i'd love to see a handful of Premium-only servers where you know everyone on your server is dedicated enough to the game to shell out 15/mo (which is about 2-3 bucks cheaper than what i pay for a movie ticket for something that lasts 2 hours).
If its similar to EQ2, free players can't upgrade spells or gear to anywhere near full potential. I'm a hardcore gamer and I appreciate when people try to maximize their character as best they can. Thats the playerbase I enjoy playing with, that people are willing to help each other out to be the most badass they can be - Isn't that why a lot of us play these games?
Being grouped with a F2P Wizard and seeing an awesome robe drop to have them say "Wow thats better than this Banana robe i had been wearing.. i could be doing way more damage but i have to upgrade my account to use that cool item" somehow doesn't have the same feel.
This game is like a last hurrah for MMOs to me, I hope its everything i want it to be.
Where do you LIVE that movie tickets cost more than 15 dollars man? O.o Not even in the East Side of Manhattan (Most expensive area of New York frankly) is a movie ticket more than 15 bucks O.o

think about it, why would someone be hell bent on not paying a sub fee but spend more than $15 a month on it anyways? that makes absolutely no sense.
F2P is good for people that want to try the game and see if they like it or its good for developers that want people to try their game.
the good F2P models are indeed the more restrictive ones, from a business standpoint.
it forces people to sub and actually spend money on their product, rather than just getting to play a free game because they are too cheap to pay for a game they want to play.

Non-3D movie ticket is 12.50 here in CO, at least it was the last time I went (about a month ago). 3D movie tickets are sometimes $18 if its IMAX and all that too.

..And it puts everyone on equal terms. Equal is very important because games also have a competition aspect, not directly but as Dave Geogeson (EqNext) puts it
"Every game has one major objective, You wanna get good at it so you can brag. But that doesn't mean I am going to tell you I am better than you.. but you still know when you are better than someone else, and that feeling is very important" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt-MEgLXKXs
Translating for You this means, if you can buy instead of earn, that feeling is gone and the competetive element with it.

Kinda defeats the purpose of free to play which is to maintain a high populace. Plus no one is going to play on these premium servers just as no one played on the EQ premium server. It divides the player base and people play where their friends and guildies play.

Going out to see a movie and playing a video game at home is apples and oranges. $15 per month is almost twice the price of Netflix and the exact same price as Gamefly.

If one of those things you want is a premium server, it won't be, so you might as well give up now.
It is about the implementation. The Everquest 1 premium server still has a cash shop. If they had moved all those cash shop items into the game itself as earnable rewards, then more people would pay the $15 monthly fee to play on premium instead.
Knowing SoE, they won't have a premium server option, because they can make more money from a cash shop than subscriptions.
Games are changing with the times and if they don't they will die. Your attitude is one of the problem with the supposed 'elite' MMO players - basic utter arrogance and hogwash tied up in one attitude package. The games will never go back to the way they were and I hope they don't. Ever hear of evolution?
Actually I think that the F2P model has been tried and found lacking. Yes they are getting a couple hundred thousand players, who bounce game to game. Dont you find it funny that the strongest MMO on the planet is a P2P Model... WoW. So they are down to 8-9million subscribers. That still blows away any other MMO out there.. F2P or otherwise.
WoW proves that people will and do P2P.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.
