I apologize for the spelling, I am typing this from my phone. I will edit it from pc soon! I am sick of typical rpgs and I want one where using a 1h weapon makes you more proficient witg 1h weapons sword art online has a great example of this you dont really pick aclass, just a race. I also would lile the game to be combat focused, not craftong the only game iknow of like this is cabal but that game sucks Thanks
Please do not say:
Cabal, Wurm, The Secret World or Runescape
Cabal is crap, I'm so sick of Runescape and Wurm is not combat oriented. TSW is a complete joke the combat has 0 feel to it and it is the buggiest POS to ever hit the market.

Bleeeech EVE. I'm not a fan of that game. Ganker + merch heaven.
I'll look into the darkfall thing
Uh..whut?
All EVE is is newbies getting ganked unless they join a corp, and the whole point of the game is to merch, which I am AWFUL at. To the guy who said I have to give it a chance: I have given it about 3 chances. Each time I played for a few days. It was boring. I got ganked multiple times as soon as I tried to mine anything above tier 1.
All of the recommendations so far are PvP focused sandboxes (aside from defiance)
You looked at Mabinogi?
You pick from Human, Giant or Elf but all can use pretty much any skillset. You rank skills kind of like The Elder Scrolls rather than pick a class, and there's no limit on mixing and matching skillsets. You level up to get AP (ability points) to spend on ranking Skills from Novice, to F, to Rank 1. Once you get to a higher level it slows down and AP is more difficult to come by. There's an aging system though - you can start at age 12-17 and you age 1 year each week on Saturday. Once you're age 20 in game you can rebirth back to 17 and back to level 1, but your skill ranks stay intact. It's pretty much limitless character progression.
It has nice action combat that is strategic too, along with lots of other MMO features most games are missing - compose your own music, cook food, fish, craft items that are better than store bought, do part time jobs for NPC's, run instanced randomly generated dungeons or do the 12 or so storylines with others, etc.
Been playing for 3 years now and put money into it every month as much as I would a sub game and don't regret it one bit.
Didn't sword art also have classes?
i.e the main char was a dual-wield class, the creator was sword/shield, etc. It was just based a game whre the classes were based on your weapon instead of the other way around.
Anyways, you may want to look into games such as Darkfall, Mabinogi, Runescape, etc. There's also games like FFXI / FFXIV which have classes, but allow you to freely switch between all of them on 1 character.
Unfortunately that anime (and others like it / that it's based on, like dot.hack//) were based off of older MMOs. So if you're looking for a similar game you are going to have to look into older (often eastern) MMOs.
From what I can tell, no, it was just a choice of starter weapon/weapon you stuck with.
I'm just not huge on the PvP, but PvP is fine! (to all those saying Darkfall and such),
I'll look into Mabinogi...last time I played it was pretty "eehhhh" but that was during beta.
I was also considering FF11, does anyone know if it's still got a good playerbase and such? 14 comes out again soon as well..
It really depends on how you look at it i guess. In sword art (though I never watched the last couple episodes), I dont think I ever saw someone change weapons (outside of the main character 'unlocking' his dual-wield spec). In the first world (SAO) everyone picked a weapon, and then learned skills as they lvled (a lot like Mabinogi, and similar to FFXI). In the second MMO (the pixie one) there were actual classes (fighters, mages, etc.) and they also learned skills as they lvled. I dont think I ever saw a mage become a fighter or visa versa.
However, if you're assuming they could, then that's very much like DF / Mabinogi, in that you can pretty much lvl anything and switch back & forth freely.
FFXI works on jobs (classes), but they are all tied to one character. It still has a pretty decent player base, though it's not as popular as it used to be. The biggest problem w/ FFXI is it's very linkshell restrictive, in that in order to do most of the cooler stuff in the game, you need a good linkshell. Furthermore, much of the lower-lvl / main questing content has been made very solo friends (with the new jobs & companions), so the experience is quite a bit different then it was @ launch. It's also a huge timesink (as is FFXIV) if you wanna fully experience the game.
FFXIV, if all the rumors r true, is remaking itself to be more like how FFXI was. So, if you can wait for that to re-release, that might not be a bad choice either.
Again, though.. Sword Art is based on older MMOs, so you will have to put up w/ things like dated graphics to get that kind of game.
Sword Art Online had classes, remember the episode with the little girl in series 1 who had the pet dragon? It was said right in that episode that she was a pet trainer.
Honestly though what you are really probably looking for Is FFXIV. Though GW2 also has the feel of specialization that you are looking for as well. Elder Scrolls Online will also have it, and who knows Everquest Next might have it as well.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
I'll try mabinogi while I wait for FF14.
Sword art may have had classes, but I remember one of the characters saying that he had to level 1 handed to level 100 or something so he could unlock 2 handed.
I don't remember any classes in Alfheim, just what people chose to specialize in. The secondary character was a swordsman who was very good at healing magic for instances.
Anyway,
Thanks for the help guys!
Look into Elder Scrolls Online and wait for Everquest Next as well.

Except there was a .hack mmo, and .hack is nothing like sword art, the only thing they have in common is what happens in the real world (people getting stuck in an mmo)
Also in many episodes they commonly refer to people (ie classed them) by their skill in a particular weapon type. For example "expert mace user". I think the system was similar to FFXIV, where your equipped weapon effected your class type and abilities you unlocked and had to be leveled individually, but you could technically switch weapons if you wanted to change classes at the cost of having to level that skill from the beginning. My guess is the Dragon Tamer class was because Silica equipped a Dragon at some point.
I have tried Mabinogi, and it seems okay but it's way too rough to start in, especially solo.
Would love to try FF11, but there's no more trial.
Can tell from your posts you have zero indication of what you want lol.
My solution, grab a rock, and start tossing it. Into everything single thing that is interesting.
Bound to hit a game that is in between your criteria one day.
The Deep Web is sca-ry.
I said exactly what I want. I like PvE, not PvP. I like classless games because, honestly, they provide tens of times more content.
I have also tried around 50% of the games on this site, nearly 90% of the ones above a 7.0 rating.
