Sci Fi MMO?

PrayrPrayr Member UncommonPosts: 267

Ok, So I have been looking now for a long time to find a Sci Fi MMO that is worth my available hours a day I have to spend gaming.

Here is what I have played and the +/- I find, perhaps there are some I have missed.

[mod edit]

Earth and Beyond - dated graphics, no meaningful crafting element

Xsyon - very limited in game play, crafting is tedious at best, no real player economy

SWTOR - Same old themepark / wow clone

Ryzom - odd GUI / controls, no housing, no MMO factor as it is very mostly empty game

Face of Mankind - Faction based, open PvP, again no MMO factor due to lack of players

Neocron2 - Good game, dated graphics, no player base, no player economy

Firefall - odd game all together, no real crafting, no player economy, no housing

Planetside / 2 - no real crafting, no housing, FPS instead of MMORPG

Entropia Universe - very expensive, real world money to do much of anything in game, low player count

Anarchy Online - waiting for new engine, low player count, no player economy, meaningless crafting

Origins - still in early alpha, decent graphics, open world / themepark hybrid no real game play as of yet

Planet Explorers - Single player, new update is MMO / minecraft clone with better graphics, still early alpha

Takidom - no housing, limited player base, no player economy,

Eve - played it for almost 3 years, crafting is tedious and time sink, not what I am looking for any more

Tabula Rasa - loved that game, only thing missing was player housing, and ship exploration

Looking for something that has a Sci Fi feel, good player base, meaningful crafting, such as personal equipment, shields, guns, med packs, armor, uniforms, ship equipment, or housing items. Want a game that has a gathering skill requirement, open world sandbox where I can build what I want where I want it. Both game play on the planet as well as in space. Exploration is a must, I want to be able to jump in my ship and go to another planet and look for rare items and fight off mobs . If I want to build a space station to call home that orbits my favorite planet, I want to be able to do it.

I know about Repopulation, I think it might be close, I know about Wildstar, again it might be close.

Any other suggestions that I may have missed tucked away in the corners of the internet that I have not been able to find?

Did the beta, have they added some crafting elements, player economy, and housing? Thought it more of a themepark instead of sandbox.

It's not an MMO but will have multiplayer elements to it. But give Starbound a look over? I'm excited about it and can't wait for their beta to start this year.

Game elements look good, however, not too much into side scroll 2d.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

Have not played it yet. Didn't think it was a sandbox. Nor did it have any crafting.

Agreed, however, the EMU is only partly working! Missing a lot of  the key elements of the game.

And the player base is not great due to it being a community project / indi / player run server.

Question? How is EVE's crafting a time sink or for that matter tedious.

You literally just buy a blueprint, minerals, a factory slot and go do something else for anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

But in no was are you stuck crafting. A timesink is where you have to wait  or spend time doing something before you can move on to something else. You can alsolutly do somehing else while a BP is cooking. Hell you can actually log out and play a different game if you want.

As a matter of fact you dont even have to level your "crafting" in that game. But the fact that something takes "time" doesnt make it a time sink.

How many factory slots can you have at one time?

    Maybe look at Fallen Earth?

I think there are a lot of us looking for the same game you described.  However, like a poster above me stated, Fallen Earth might come close, minus the spaceships.

afaik, only 3 MMORPGs have had space AND ground gameplay in same game - SWG, STO and TOR.

SWG was the only sandbox is no longer active.  STO and TOR are both extremely mediocre and a waste of IP.

Without space, Fallen Earth sounds like a good fit, but it's probably emptyish.

Oh, yea, i have played FE, and yes... very empty.

crafting is more for self preservation vs crafting to be part of a community or economy, as there is no player base to speak of.

This would be my suggestion, too, even though its not released yet and it looks more like a themepark and not a sandbox.  Still looks promising with player housing, crafting and the non combat type paths like settler and explorer.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

OP you could always look at either of these which will come out some time next year.

    1. http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/

    2. http://elite.frontier.co.uk/

Both have had good results from kickstarter and you can still contribute if you so wish or just use the boards which have good feed-back and for a change no raging about what's going on.

    Hope this helps.

Ya EU seems to fit your criteria perfectly.   Only it it was affordable :(   And only if MA would make the game affordable so people like me would go back and play.

There will be meaningful crafting and open world pvp, but no gathering/building.

  • PhaserlightPhaserlight Member EpicPosts: 3,075

    Vendetta Online.

good player base - smaller than some, but has a very tight-knit feel with lots of activity

meaningful crafting - check; VO includes some scarce resources and some craftable items that can take months of planning and execution

gathering skill requirement - resources can be gathered via mining (in which some asteroids can be depleted via heat) or scavenged from the Hive (artificial intelligences that compete with players and each other)

    open world sandbox - check.

game play on the planet as well as in space - not yet, but as a planned feature:

I can personally vouch that this is a very satisfying game.  I've been a player for 10 years.

Fallen Earth is in no way empty.  You must have played 2 years ago.

    Good luck in your search.
