Just can't find an MMO to sink my teeth into

TalonsWingTalonsWing Member Posts: 33

SWG, WOW, AOC, LOTR had my attention for differing periods.  SWTOR was my last and I just found at the end that the developers confusing approach to things including class balance and high level pvp was a turn off.  I loaded Neverwinter Online and just couldn't get into it.

Is there anything on the horizon that everyone is waiting to play?  SWTOR was my last and best hope for something really immersive, but hanging out on a space station with 1000 other Sith Lords killed it for me lol.

If anyone has a suggestion of something around the corner I'd love to hear about it.  Many thanks for reading.

I'm in the exact same boat =/ Can't find a good game to play for the life of me.  Well that's not true, Darkfall seems to have just about everything I'm looking for and seems amazing from the video's I've seen but I'm just waiting a bit to justify dumping 40$ into a gamble like that.  The last game that I really enjoyed was GW2 so I'd suggest maybe checking that out as well.

Upcoming games that look really interesting to me at least are Wildstar, Maybe TESO, and Black Desert.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

Personally looking forward to ESO, ArcheAge & especially Black Desert.  Maybe FF14's reboot might be worth staying a while.. ?

I know we're always waiting for the next game that's going to save mmos but this new batch does actually look like the devs are trying.

Wildstar looks like it's going to try and recapture what was popular and somehow got lost in mmos. I'm going to try it but I've been trying not to get too hyped about it.

eqn eso and a few others look promising. I tend not to jump in head first anymore but you even know with a new game I guess.

I would suggest playing The Secret World for awhile. I've heard that there is a buddy code or something where existing players can let you have some free time in the game.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

As long as you can deal with the dated graphics, i've found this to be a great idea. I'm really digging AC right now. image

And of course, PS1 is free for vets currently.

Id say give star trek online a try! I was in the same boat as you, not having a MMO to play but im really enjoying STO right now. Theres your typical ground combat, think star wars but with 4 companions instead of 1, and theres space combat like EVE but simpler and you do have to move around to do the best damage (shields come down on each side). You also get to customize your ships, visit your friends ships, send up to 400+ officers on missions that get you xp, money and more while your away from the game and its all free too. Ill definitely be playing it until TESO or another one of the big mmo's come out.

It's funny how psyched I was to try Neverwinter.  I loved all of the games in its legacy line.  I will look at some of the games listed and see if anything really grabs me.

    Thanks for the responses!

We all just have to hold on.  I'm dicking around a little in GW2, but not putting any real effort into progression.  More interesting games are coming, which makes waiting seem like forever.  At least one or two of them should be a nice change for those of us sick to death of theme parks.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

same.  it is just too far off horizon for Star Citizen.

Rift goes F2P in 2 days. Why not spend some time there and see if you like it? You can actually start now using the free trial.

IMHO thats the problem everyone is having. They keep waiting for whats around the corner and it will never, ever be there. They want that feeling they had years ago when they first caught the mmorpg bug.  When WoW and EQ released, folks caught the fever and got over it. No matter how many games they pump out now, you will never get that feeling again.

That has been the case in the past when we were all hoping the tide would change in MMO development.  Even a couple years ago it was looking pretty grim, and I was seriously starting to believe I was going to be ending my MMO gaming hobby for good. We got games like SWTOR, GW2, Defiance, etc, and while I know some people love them, there's a growing number of people who have been there and done that ad nauseum.  The difference now is that there are games we know are hybrids and sandboxes *finally* coming, and they will be different experiences than the pure theme parks we've had for the past 8 or 9 years now.

I don't think it's enough to tell people to stop looking forward and just deal with what is available.  I gave several new games my full attention when they released this past year or so, and the pure theme park experience can no longer keep my interest.  No amount of forcing my focus is going to change the fact that these games are limited in scope, easy-mode and too contrived for me to find them interesting.

If your focus is PvE and fantasy, try EQ2. In my mind, it is the best fantasy PvE game in existence. I am currently in Neverwinter, but I am sure I will be back in EQ2 sometime.

Well, money isn't a problem for me.  Last week, I went ahead and bought the Rift expansion and signed up and was bored with it inside of a week just like I was when I played it at release.   Really, if you are bored with theme parks in general, like I am, then no F2P game is going to become interesting just because it's free.

I played SWG for multiple years and loved it.  It has been my favorite MMO of all time to this day.   Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up real well today, especially in a partially complete / clunky pre-CU form.

I haven't given up hope mind  you, I just know that it will be very hard to relive those memories from the past. I hope you are right about these new hybrid type games coming up, but like you I will press on with what I have and just live with it. My biggest fantasy would be just to have Blizzard fire up a few Vanilla servers and keep them maintained with a minimal subscription.

Yeah, I heard your wallet can play the game for you now :)

    Mine won't.

GW2 sucked me in for a solid four months.  I haven't touched half the content, but I just got burned out.  It is a great game.  The WvW is also a wonderful time-suck (the good way).   Pay once, play forever.  The nice thing about the game is that new content and world events keep coming.

DF - If you are interested in DarkFall, I'd recommend paying for a few months (Depends on your budget, of course).  I played the original and was totally absorbed for about a year.  If you like playing with others in groups and/or crafting, I'd imagine this is a great place to play.  You'd think it would feel empty because of the lack of "story" or "quests," but I was more involved in that game and my clan than most I play.

Neverwinter - Got to 25 and it didn't feel challenging at all, so I left.

I'm also considering going back to DF, but in the meantime I'm giving Dragon's Prophet a generous trial and playing some closed-betas to keep things interesting.  There was a feature on MMORPG.com earlier this week where the author mentioned how it is harder to invest in a single game nowadays, since the market is flooded with options, make and model.  I think many of us are feeling the same.

there's nothing out there right now, i'm even considering taking the plunge and crawling back to warcraft after being away for a long time simply because there's nothing else out there worth playing (and while endgame sucks in warcraft with it's constant dailies and grind it is still fun to level up a character through all of the zones starting from the beginning after you've been away).

    i've tried most of them.

i'm not sure if we're allowed to just say we're in beta of a specific game or games so i won't comment on if i'm in beta or not specifically in reference to any games i suppose.

but as to the current games out there released there's nothing worth playing, the only thing i feel is worth playing is eve but i just don't feel like attempting to get into it at this stage.

and the sad thing is there isn't alot of stuff coming that looks that captivating either, some stuff looks decent and what not but nothing that blows me away and makes me feel like i'm going to spend years with it. (5+ years).

i'm hoping wildstar will deliver on how creative/quirky/fun it looks but even if it does i have a feeling it will only be a short term thing. (perhaps a year at most).

it's a sad time to be an mmo fan, and i don't know what the solution is either.

It looks like most of the games you listed, besides SWG, are basic quest grinders.  Maybe try a different type of game? There is Eve, Age of Wushu, Fallen Earth, or GW2 for something that is a little different. Heck, even give Path of Exile a good run.  That's a fun game for what it is.  I know, I know,...some people don't like the buzz word, "fun".
