A true steampunk MMO

sado2020sado2020 Member Posts: 112

Where is it?

I see fantasy primarily taking hold with sci fi rightfully gaining some momentum but Im still waiting for an MMO to take place in a fully steampunk oriented world. Neosteam was the only one I know of for sure, but it was mediocre at best. I know WoW Rift (which I am playing currently) and others have steampunk elements but only mild ones at that.  City of Steam should be launching soon but from what  Ive seen its a browser based MMO :/

Someone please someone tell me something is coming out on the horizon!

Playing: TSW, D&D NW, Defiance (more the tv show than game >.> ) LotRO, DCUO

Black Gold is in development by Snail Games. I am not sure how far along they are though.

OP you mean "true steampunk" as in more like Arcanum kind of steampunk rpg setting rite?

Not just fantasy with steampunk pasted on? (ie. just magic with guns)

City of Steam?...Isn't that what they are kinda aiming at?

Looks like City of Steam or Black Gold are our only upcoming options.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

A true steampunk MMO should give us combat much closer to Victorian era combat than medieval combat, but sadly zero MMOs get this important element right. All the "steampunk" MMOs available or under development are just sword & sorcery MMOs with a coat of brass paint.

Not an MMO, but Guns of Icarus is the closest thing to a steampunk combat game as we seem to have right now.

I think Arcanum is an rpg (not an mmo) that got that right.

Not sure if you heard of it, it was pretty old.

Out of curiosity, what are your reservations about getting involved in a browser-based MMO?

There's going to be Black Gold that is Steampunk..

Unfortunately it's being made by Snail Games and I don't like dealing with these guys very much. They have poor customer service suport over here in the US.

I got that from my time dealing with Snail USA and the Age of Wushu game. I personally never had any issues with payment things or having my account hacked / locked.

But I am not everyone and seeing people getting screwed just rubs me the wrong way..

PM before you report at least or you could just block.

City of Steam might run in a browser, but it's just the same as any other mmorpg. If you're looking for a steampunk mmo, you'd be silly not to give it a go (imo).

Guns of Icarus Online (Adventure mode). Its still in kickstarter but you can officially play the Airship combat (Off Steam).

You can read what they have planned for the world play here

Unfortunately I don't see it being released any time soon.
