A real review of EvE online

RekindleRekindle Member UncommonPosts: 1,206

I think many of you are getting the wrong idea about EvE online because you are trying to place this game into the same mold that we've all become acustomed to from games like WoW and EQ.  EvE online is totally unique in that sense and I thought I would try and shed some light into the game for those wondering about it.  Also I would like to put to bed some misconceptions about the game.

#1 Offline learning.  At first some like it some hate it, in the end its best to look at training this way:

You do not repeat tasks over and over and over in this game to get better.  If you don't train a skill you will never get better at doing it.  Think of training in this game like this...you get a steady flow of "exp" rolling in and its your job to allocate that flow (loose compairson but suitable) to your various training requirements.  If you do not log on and set the next skill to train after you have successfully obtained some training, however, you will not train.

What the training system in this game does is removes the need to do certain things advance your character.  Instead your game time is spent doing "whatever".

#2 this is a game of politics.  Who you know, who likes you and who you like and dislike is very important.  The basic premise of corporation (guild) wars is if you are in a player run corporation (as opposed to teh default NPC corps) you can have war declared on you. After the dec. is made "legal" fighting can commence between the declaring corp and the corp they declared on in 24 hours.  After a war has commenced, there are no safe spots other then stations (which means you are not really out and about) and no police protection.

Mercenary corps exist whose sole purpose is to receive money from a player or organization to declare war on another corporation. Normally, the MERC corp will have a contract to destroy the corp.  Good, bad and ugly this can be.

#3 Most of the items made in the game are player made.  If you're buying something on the market, theres a good chance someone else made it.

#4 The size of your brain is far more important then the size of your guns.

#5 There is one game world for all EvE players.  Your rep can be very important.

#6 The game is boiled down to industrialists (miners, crafters) and combat pilots (mercenarys, NPC hunters, Pirates (PKs).

#7 The game has a basic "quest" system in the form of missions.  Completing missions for an NPC raises your standing with that NPC and that NPC's faction.  Rasise your standing and gain access to harder, more complication and difficult missions.

#8 There is a lot of room for grief play in this game IMO (please don't take this off topic fellow eve players because i said IMO!).  That is, players join corps just to spy on them, steal there stuff and then dec. them later after they get the infos they need.

#9 money is pretty easy to come by if you have a stomach for mining or doing missions.

#10 Its an international game with people all over the world playing 24/7 x365.

#11 Space in the game is divided into solar systems, separated by star gates. You travel from one system to another via Jumping.  To jump from one end of the universe to the other would take a very very long time....EvE is a BIG universe.

The bottom line is this game is not for everyone.  People who play the game for 2 days and come to come back and say its crap are entitled to their opinion....but there is no way in hell to get a full appreciation of this game in 2 days.  This game is for people who have patience. The risk vs reward factor can be very, very high compared to other games.

I have my own gripes about this game due to some problems with #8 right now....there is nothing to protect the little guys and their little corps from gankers who just wanna cause problems ----other then not having a player org or joining a bigger corp/alliance for greater protection.  The probelm iwth that is you loose control over your own destiny to some extent.

Anyway, theres more, lots more, but that should clear up some things. This is not duke nukem online.

Actually to #8: your corp can protect your assets if they play it smart... My corp does so, I'm the ceo there and I choose who comes in and get what rights, I got 3 "officers" or Directors, the rest get granted rights but no rights to the blueprint hangar...

Even if I grant rights to the blueprint hangar the most expensive blueprints that I got in this game I still keep in my hangar and make copies that I leave in the corp (I paid for these blueprints myself).

To protect from Spy's and other stuff is much harder... but quite simply... don't give up if someone is attacking your corp, fight back... find the spy and if that does not help... jump corp and find a better one.

Yes we loose our ship. So you better have a clone of your ship and keep it updated everytime you upgrade your ship. So all your earnings won't be blown into waste.

    Im Amazed..... NOT!!!

Correction on this one. Barring unscheduled downtimes, the game server goes down for 1 hour each day at 11:00 GMT for a scheduled downtime. This happens EVERY DAY to those who aren't expecting it.

Regarding griefing, there are easy ways to prevent this from happening. Escrow scams can be prevented by examining the item before purchasing. Unfair corp wars can be prevented by watching what you and your members do and say and if you get unlucky, you can just move somewhere else and let the war go on without making it mutual and therefore making them pay for it. Corp asset stealing can be prevented by limiting access to members you don't trust. Those high-profile robberies you heard about happen very very rarely.

As for the missions... this is a gripe I've always had with Eve... from R&D to regular Security missions. They seem to "pick them from a hat"... you could get the mission you just got . other than that the game is pretty much good.

All factors taken into consideration, yes I like the game.  There is no doubt that the game is very pvp centric.  Just let me get my flame suit on for this next comment as I'm sure it will come back to haunt me.....

As in every game, there are sooooo many different sides attitudes and beliefs that comprise a player base.  The PvP'rs wil often say the PvP mechanic is just fine. However, I maintain there is a certain level of opportunity for grief play (for those following the EVe online forums his is NOT a reference to the corp I've been dealing with there).

When somone can log on with an alt, or a trial account and pay a mercenary corp money to come hunt you down because they don't like the fact you are miners, and the crawl back into the wood work with little means for the said you to address the root cause, this is, in my book griefing.

The situation I've dealt with all week is a griefer joined our corp, demanded money "or else", paid a merc corp to wipe us out and then scurried away.  Obviously the guys "main" was being shielded and he was pumping money to his alt to make such arrangements.

The game is both good and bad because its a harsh "wild west" kind of game. Unfortunately, this can make it rough to build non agressive player run organizaitons sometimes.  Again, the PvP community would step and say EvE is about pvp so deal with it.  I respect that stance, but it makes it difficult for starting corps to get a foothold if they have to spend time energy and resources on thwarting poeple who's only purpose is to undermine and destroy your organization for the sake of it.

Its a catch 22 because there's not much I would like to change about the game but in the same breath I would rather spend my time building organizations (something im pretty good at) and less time dealing with the fall out from griefers.

Am still confused as to buy this game or not from the sounds of it the pvp is a very good system if not a bit unfair at times maybe it would be better if they had a lvl system where u could not attack a corp that was a lesser lvl than yourself or some sort of system so u could at least get started in the universe still think i will buy and try myself

Do yourself a favor and get a trial if you can.

I'm playing the trial right now (alt tabbed as we speak while auto-pilot sends me to a new docking station)

I have to say, TRY IT. Get a key from the thread on this page someplace.. and TRY IT. This game is fun. Unfortunately, I can't afford to pay for a second monthly fee... :( So when my free trial runs out, I'll have to be done.

For a very long time I refused to play the game cause I didn't like the pay for play.. (still don't) but I have found the game worth it. If you are worried about the fact a guy with a huge ship can come and wipe you out before you realise what is happening then fear not. There are different system security ratings that (to some extent) stop that thing. If you are in a core system the cops have your back. if you venture out to the outer systems then it's a free for all. A lot of people stay in the core systems (AKA care bears) but for the best rewards you head to the outer system (when you are ready). The thing that makes it worth it is the ability to train skills offline (This is the ONLY reason I over look the pay for play.)

Ps. get a trial account and look for yourself.

    Cya in the game

That point is crucial from my point of view and my experience in Eve. The game is focused on military PVP : to balance the game CCP made a amazing works at allowing affordable ship fleet to become very efficient with a good tactic. The drawback is that it cost very few money to build a PK fleet able to rampage any industrial corporation.

On a larger scale, it is easier to attack then to defend in Eve thanks to some abuse (loging out in a contested area, instas jumps that allow you to force a blockade, exploiting lag on nodes)... The biggest alliance in the game, Xetif, was destroyed in a couple of weeks by well trained PvPers.

More over, I still think that crafting sucks in Eve, of course most of the items are player made but you forget to say that they are all the same. If you build a "150mm Railgun", every single crafter in the game will be able to build the exactly same railgun as you, no special bonuses, nothing. Most of the time, crafting is run by corporations who build thousands of item at low cost (because there are no difference between the items you can only lower the price to attract buyers) and they use this small profits as "side income". A small guild willing to develop its own business will have little chance against these corporations.

Only the rare "tech II" items are profitable but since they are given via a lotery, you can't count on it.
