[Review] Scarlet Blade: A Shameful & Degrading Experience

It's getting to a point where I honestly wish a asteroid would just smack into the Earth... we went from: IT IS OFFENSIVE BECAUSE TITS ARE OUT! to IT'S OFFENSIVE BECAUSE I THINK THEY ARE 14 year old TITIES AND I CAN SEE THEM! ... people are uncomfortable with what appeals to them on a primal level that they know is not right and God does that show both in the review and in some of the comments in this thread. I get why people are so up in arms about this game, it objectifies women, I get it, most of us got it before it was explained to us the first time... and the 50th sure didn't hammer home anything new either but these sort of things will continue to exist for as long as sentient life draws breath (or in the case of infomorphs: the PC doesn't fail to load Windows) because it is in the nature of things and both sexes have it, men are just lucky we get shamed into hating it publicly while having a secret stash of it somewhere in the multiverse (trust me if dimensional travel was possible there'd be quite a few dimensions filled with encrypted porn) because our gender had a good... 2000 or so years of dominance (give or take a century) before the other gender went "uhmm... so you're holding us down because a book said so? oh no culture?" but does not make women who watch gay porn for the same kicks men who watch lesbian porn any less rare so if equality holds and the men who watch such porn are pigs then ladies you have quite a few sows in your fold too, probably an equal number.

TL;DR version: Stop caring about pixels, stop caring about lines drawn by hand, they can be 14, they can be 140 for all I care, what matters is not the effect but the cause so soap boxers (goes for posters and website employees/reviewers who are preachy) kindly stop trying to teach unknowns over the internet how to act and behave and start teaching your own kids/young brothers or sisters/cousins/w/e how to think in a rational fashion about sexuality (by that I mean rational not some pseudo-religious pseudo-moral bullshit you keep hearing about on the news or in Church/Mosque/etc if you're extremely unlucky).

    bottom line:

seeing a little skin in a game is tragic, unethical, horrible

war, killing people, blood splats, genocide  etc. in games is ok .. lol funny people.

The hypocrisy angle is pretty moronic.  Violence is obviously a natural part of the genre.

Your argument would hold more water if games like Hard Rain that have sex and nudity are vilified for it, but they mostly are not.  yes, there was an uproar over the GTA thing, but that was nowhere near as big as the uproar over Mortal Kombat.

Not going to deny that in general America isnt fond of exposing its youth to sex but has a more lenient attitude towards violence, but sex and nudity in video games has been mostly accepted if not commonplace (because the medium doesnt really lend itself to it being commonplace) in games targeted at an adult audience.

Scarlet Blade is not targeted at an adult audience and as I said i dont find it particularly offensive (most non feminists don't) but it is incredibly juvenile.  there is a big difference between admiring the naked female form and hee-hee look everyone unrealistic boobies.

While I do not find any of this shameful or offensive, I do think it's rather odd to want have anything "sexy" in a video game. If you want to get one out there are far better avenues than fucking video games. The idea that some of the people I'm gaming with in an online world are playing while fully aroused is nothing short of nasty. There are way too many "specimens" out there who call themselves gamers.

    1. dont go to a nudist beach

    2. try to understand what you are afraid of

    3. because we are speaking of morality  and  ethic - they are not universal. Game reviews should not go into this territory.  People spouting moral lessons on a gaming site are hypocritical (look the all killing, wars and drama in games ) and dont have the mandate nor competency to teach people of what is moral and what not.

If the topic is nothing more than the attempt to ban nudism and sexual depictions, you can't have understand the whole problem yet. It's NOT against nudity or sex in general (while nudity and sex can be 2 completely different shoes but that's another topic). It's all about sexual associations with under-aged. Is that so difficult to comprehend or what are you trying to defend here?

I'd say that "degrading" theme was the entire focus of the game? I can't say you can review the game and list this as a pro or con because that is the theme. It's like going into a Steampunk MMO, reviewing it, and saying it has too much technology mixed with old times and fantasy just because you don't like Steampunk. Lol.

I haven't played this but I really don't see the difference between something like this and Dead or Alive 5.  Both blatantly use the female body to sell their games.  Yet Dead or Alive doesn't catch that much flack for it.  Dead or Alive is actually a really good game if you give it a chance.

The reality is games, movies, television, commericals objectify women AND men, and use "sexy" to sell their products all the time.  If you are disgusted by this, I honestly don't see how you can step out of you door in the morning and live in the real world.

This site already had 2 features slamming this game without even really giving it a shot.  I don't think we needed another one if the reviewer wasn't actually going to play the game for any length of time, and not give it an unbiased review.

Just like I wouldn't ask someone who hates SF games to review an SF game, it is somewhat pointless to have a guy who hates tits to review a titty game.  Everybody who has visited your site has seen all the ads you display and already knows the game has tits and a hentai vibe, what people want to know is about the mechanics, how does it play, what is end game like, is it pay to win or just pay to see boobs, etc... etc... you know the kind of discussion you would normally find in a game review.  Not, the mechanics are pretty good except OMG boobs!  I think I'm gonna be sick!

  • abbabaabbaba Member Posts: 1,143
While the review wasn't very well written, the author's point is clear: It's a bad game, with tits. Why bother when you can play a good game, then get your tit-fix somewhere else? I think 'shameless' is a good word; the game developers think they can put out a bad game and blind their audience with softcore porn. Time will tell if they are correct.

I call BS on your review, you have already pre-judged this game in your worst of 2013 debacle.

To claim, "what I experienced in this game was the aforementioned degrading and shameful experience." is ludicrous. In other MMO's I have beheaded both men and women as well as a number of imaginary folk, beheaded that is with fountains of blood literally spraying out of the neck, I have disemboweled, electrocuted, melted, disintegrated, shot, kneecapped so many pixel's I can't count. Yet you don't bash those for violence. Almost every game displays so mild form of nudity, in one shape or another (though I concede SB takes it to a new level) and you don't bash the others.

I don't play SB, I downloaded it, tried it out, but it was not my cup of tea.  But this review is shameful, and it degrades honest reviewers, so again I call BS on the review!

  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Member UncommonPosts: 654
It's funny, reviews like this just make me want to download the game to see how crap it is for myself.  It makes me laugh how disgruntled people get over a bit of bare female flesh.  Everywhere you look there's tits and arse, from music videos on TV to posters in the high street.  It's ok to find loads of imaginative ways to kill people in a video game, but show a nipple and it's time to call the vicar.
  • MardukkMardukk Member RarePosts: 2,222

I'm trying to figure out what's in the game, but I can't as the reviewer was so "offended" that he forgot to write the full game review.

Why did they have someone that can't handle cleavage write a review for this game?  He got so damn upset and flustered he couldn't really review the game.

Maybe I haven't seen all of this game but everything I've seen has characters that are covered to an extent...no Mortal Online type nudity.

  • HealthyGamerHealthyGamer Member Posts: 25

Wow...a review from MMORPG that's not a score of 7.5.  Interesting.

You have eight headings up there under which you rate this game.  In five out of eight you keep smashing us over the head with the "shameless pornography" thing (after you already gave it to us in the intro I might add).  We get it already ... you were offended.  Alright, fine, you covered that pretty well in the friggin title actually.  I agree their approach is over the top, blatent, ridiculous, etc ... but could you spare us the morality hammer please and just review the game.  There are plenty of games out there where characters are taken straight from a stereotype - or we get to see spines ripped out of bodies, heads cut from their necks, limbs hacked off - or any number of other themes, yet you're losing your mind over some breasts and jiggle?  Get real man.  I tried the game and I think it sucks.  I had a chuckle at the "in your face" use of erotic themes and moved on to the next one.  I really don't think you were exercising very good journalistic integrity here.

Do you think you could have used the words "degrading and shameful" a few more times?... ^^  Granted the game is silly, and as a MMO its the all too typical grind fest, but going on (and on...) about how "degrading" it is,  says more about your ideology, than it does about the game.

Lets not even get in to the PC aspects of this, but you could have simply pointed out how little the game brings to the table in terms of game play, its dynamic systems and all of the related *game* aspects, and that would have been more than sufficient, to warrant a low score.

You are obviously not part of the demographic that this game is targeted at.  As much as some might wish other wise, sex sells, especially to those this game is directed at.  But without all of the hysterical over reactions that its received, it would have rightly passed un noticed by the vast majority of players.

Morals are absolutely relevant to aesthetics if the aesthetics offend.

If you are "offended" by some aspect of a game, the best response is to not play it, and go play something else.

Is it just coincidence that mmorpg.com is no longer displaying ads for this game that it got a (slightly) unfair review? LOL

Don't get me wrong, I agree with most of the review, BUT some things I don't think were fully fair.. the game LOOKS good(Aside from it being pretty offensive for a 'mainstream' game)

But ya, I find it amusing that this came out the day after the ads stopped.

While I don't entirely disagree with the review, it sure seems like the reviewer had his mind made up before he even started playing. This is the poorest review I've seen on this site so far. Seemed more like a rant than a review. Oh well, they can't all be good. For the most part I love MMORPG.com reviews. Keep up the good work fellas! :D

Just google "Topfreedom wikipedia", you may find the new york section an interesting read lol

Edit: I took out the link as it has a couple boobies showing on the wiki page and i don't feel like getting some warnings.

Here is my take on this MMO from a woman's perspective.

I went in to this game knowing what is was like on the surface. It's a game geared towards a very specific market and hits the target. It's a fairly humorous game and makes no issue to point this out to you. If you take this game as seriously as you would a ranked SC2 match, you'll come out disappointed.

This game is about using fantasy women in a fantasy setting. Shameful and Degrading? Not so much. While this game makes it a point to keep each character as scantily dressed as possible, the developers make it a point not to go overboard. Players that intentionally go around in what is essentially the "buff" are quickly taken care of. Dress me in lingerie, yes. Prance me around naked, no.

What also makes this game different from whatever the reviewer plated, is that while skin is heavily prevalent, these women are deadly combatants. The developers have made sexy women who are also skilled soldiers. While this is a heavily used cliche, it's a good one. Basically along the lines of, "I can take on anything while still looking good."

The developers also portray these digital ladies a little more realistically than your average magazine portraying the latest Cover Girl. While they have some amazing measurements, they are within the realm of reality. And yes, for the most part the typical Asian male fantasy of a good looking woman with very large breasts is in the game. But then, so is it in many other Asian games, Anime, and Manga.

Gameplay wise....this game needs a lot of work. It's not the worst game I've ever tried, but it really really needs work. Really mediocre, kind of like Defiance.

If you can keep in your head that this is an ASIAN developed game with the NORMAL ASIAN MALE preferences while also taking in to consideration that this game does NOT take itself too seriously (it does more than Wildstar though) and if you can put up with a mediocre game (hey, if you got through Defiance (the game) you can get through this) then it might be a game for you.

And for those of you who feel this is "Shameful & Degrading" experience, I suggest you compare these completely fake women with what you see on a fashion runway or magazine. Heck, these 3d woman look more human than most supermodels.

If this was written for solely that reason, then it should be titled as an Editorial not a Review. The two are not exactly the same.

Highlighted for you even though you will still not to see the hypocrisy...

I'm not sure if that was meant for me or not. If it was...

Yes, with some getting bent out of shape because many find the game and it's models offensive it does come off as they have a deep rooted need to see these models, so much so that they need to bash and insult anyone that doesn't find the models appropriate for a game. Yes, I do feel that look like 14 year old sex dolls and for $20 extra yes, they can be naked.

Yes, being appalled by something that resembles a 14 year old sex doll is different from being offended by seeing breast in a game.

Yes, I feel telling people to grow up because they find the models and their young perverse appearance to be offensive to grow up is confusing.

You are correct that I do not see the hypocrisy so by all means please point it out to me.

I wouldn't preach about competency if I were you seeing as you have completely failed at reading my post and or comprehending it prior to replying to it.

Nudity (Partial or fully) in itself is not an issue nor is it the issue. I've explained it as plainly as I can and if you can not understand it by now you really shouldn't attempt lecturing anyone about competency.

Yet another article based on a pseudo-feminist point of view that actually is just another patriarchal religious bullcrap. Reminds of the early days of cinema and TV. You showed a breast and it was hell to pay, now it's common. Games are the new grounds, show a nipple and it's distasteful, degrading, bad, satanic, heretical, evil to the core! But as more and more companies understand and break away from this stupid point of view (hey George, violence should be such a bigger issue than a nice pair of breasts) I hope we will get the gaming industry to the maturity level that finally other visual midias have achieved.

Not saying just blunt out porn out everything, but if you want to add nudity to a game, more power to you. Nothing wrong with that (see popularity of nudity mods).

Fun fact, APB has in it's female textures nipples draw on them (G1 didn't remove it in APB:Reloaded). Maybe they got scared of this kind of negative crap from the media and decided to pull away from ever putting (or allowing the removal) clothing that would show a bit more skin. Can still dress your character like a tramp. Like most games (don't even get me started on their "art" about the game. Seriously, even those timed based "strategy" browser games sport a scantly clad girl to advertise them and you don't see articles giving crap about it).

I can never judge games by their content because I have no game design experience. Far too many of these 'Reviews' are done by bloggers who also have no game design experience.

IMHO I find nothing wrong with Scarlet Blade except with some icon/toolbar problems. I would rate this game with solid nines. I minimize chat and don't pay attention to what other characters are doing, unless they decide to attack me.
