Here is my take on this MMO from a woman's perspective.
I went in to this game knowing what is was like on the surface. It's a game geared towards a very specific market and hits the target. It's a fairly humorous game and makes no issue to point this out to you. If you take this game as seriously as you would a ranked SC2 match, you'll come out disappointed.
This game is about using fantasy women in a fantasy setting. Shameful and Degrading? Not so much. While this game makes it a point to keep each character as scantily dressed as possible, the developers make it a point not to go overboard. Players that intentionally go around in what is essentially the "buff" are quickly taken care of. Dress me in lingerie, yes. Prance me around naked, no.
What also makes this game different from whatever the reviewer plated, is that while skin is heavily prevalent, these women are deadly combatants. The developers have made sexy women who are also skilled soldiers. While this is a heavily used cliche, it's a good one. Basically along the lines of, "I can take on anything while still looking good."
The developers also portray these digital ladies a little more realistically than your average magazine portraying the latest Cover Girl. While they have some amazing measurements, they are within the realm of reality. And yes, for the most part the typical Asian male fantasy of a good looking woman with very large breasts is in the game. But then, so is it in many other Asian games, Anime, and Manga.
Gameplay wise....this game needs a lot of work. It's not the worst game I've ever tried, but it really really needs work. Really mediocre, kind of like Defiance.
If you can keep in your head that this is an ASIAN developed game with the NORMAL ASIAN MALE preferences while also taking in to consideration that this game does NOT take itself too seriously (it does more than Wildstar though) and if you can put up with a mediocre game (hey, if you got through Defiance (the game) you can get through this) then it might be a game for you.
And for those of you who feel this is "Shameful & Degrading" experience, I suggest you compare these completely fake women with what you see on a fashion runway or magazine. Heck, these 3d woman look more human than most supermodels.
I pretty much agree with this. I think SB likes to dramatize things a little too much.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Do you think it's ok for children to play the game?
There are many things young folk<including teens> are doing now which parents are either turning their heads or not curbing. Which is why America still has a problem with early parent pregnancy issues and toddlers and tiara which is pretty much soft erotica in some blantant episodes. With America's fear-approach to any topic on sexuality often leaves much room for ignorance and fear that can have a negative effect. Sometimes it is better to be open with one's own kids and explain things, even things deemed as uncomfortable instead of leaving them out to find those things out themselves where then possible issues can occur.
That does not come from relying on a video-game or any other form of entertainment for instructions or 'moral' structures<would be poor to rely on entertainment for self-image or instructions in the first place>. It comes from actual guidance and real-world factors and dealing with real-world situations that eventually everyone will have to face in their life-time. Real-life is not always a bed of roses or a park walk. It's knowing how to deal with those situations that are important and have an actual effect on one's life, not worrying about a optional and non-obligatory M-rated titles in video-games with some nude pixels.
Whether they want their kid to play a game or not is up to those parents but if it is already rated for a audience, then that audience is allowed to play it by rating requirements. Not every child is raised under the same guidelines or expectations as every other child, nor should they forced or expected to be as such. What it comes down to if the parent approves of them playing a game or not, and SB is still rated M regardless.
Some parents disapprove of the story <The Perks Of Being a WallFlower> and want it banned. Does it mean that an entire book should be forever banned because it makes a couple of parents out there uncomfortable<it talks about the voodoo subjects like sexuality, drugs, abuse, pyschological issues and suicide > so no one else can view or read it? No I don't believe so and the same is to video-gaming. The problem with gaming is that these subjects are never touched upon and if they are they are quickly put under a cover or put away. Because gaming is still being consider only a Disney Place, where such subjects should never be expressed in a game or immediatly become shunned. Yet gaming itself can diversely serve audiences of different ages. No different than movies or books can yet the realization of this still hasn't occured. Which is why gaming still remains within the 4 walls effect
The ratings and descriptions of games exist for a reason so those who play games know ahead of time what to expect in a game.
As for America's phobia on human form and sexuality, one part I do not understand with all the bible-thumping religion condemnation of the human form, it was the very same westernized god who made what the human form looks like for both female, male and in-between. In reality it should be a celebration, not a condemnation influenced by hypocrites who'll condemn the human body, yet praise and support painting of naked cupid or a cover off national geographic.
Your comments about its aesthetics lacks objectivity, a characteristic required for good journalism. Your moral views are irrelevant to aesthetics, probably shaped and nurtured by some corporate religion. This is a meta-ethical moral relativists world we live in by the way
Morals are absolutely relevant to aesthetics if the aesthetics offend.
The problem is that the "morals" of ultra-violence in these games is *NEVER* pointed out or scored negatively, but apparently sexuality is.
I have no doubt this game sucks ass, and is cheesy, though I haven't played it. But I don't need morals dictated to me by reviewers, especially if the morality of violence and other aspects aren't rated in these games by said reviewers.
I notice they had no problem collecting advertising funds for this "degrading" game.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Not gonna lie Ford, this is one of your worst reviews. Now I don't like the game, in fact boring casual grindfest themeparks are one of my least favorite genres. However when you state things like "X is bad, because you can't do this." Well why can't you do "this"? For instance when you touched on build diversity, but you don't go into any detail with examples. When I gave my thoughts about the same subject in Marvel Heroes. When playing a Storm, you eventually get a skill called Thundering Tempest in which you simply run around a melt enemies with a damage/slow aura, which causes all Storms to gravitate towards that skill.
I don't know. . . I guess I was just expecting more from you.
Also you've more than likely garnered more attention for this game than all site adverts that have been displayed here.
Why are you guys complaining about the review? I think they were holding back imo...
Since the death of pre-NGE SWG nothing released is even close to being a great game....
WOW,EVE,RIFT,SWTOR,GW2 ???? Really? These are B-Movies compared to EQ,DAoC,SWG
And the games being released now are straight to DVD movies... Quit speding your$$$$ on crap
/venting over
My complaint isn't about the score the game was given due to gameplay. What I don't like is a reviewer commenting on the morality of the game. That is none of their business, unless this website is becoming a f*cking church.
I'm sure the game does suck, but I really don't give a rip if the reviewers don't like the sexuality of the game, especially when they don't comment about other moral issues, such as violence, murder, war, theft, etc, etc.

lol its not the boobs per say but the complete and utter focus on them in this game. This is not a game you would want to play with anyone else in the room simply because it resembles soft core pornography with the extreme attentiveness to well "sex sells" Game made for lonely otakus.... I tried the game and could barely stomache getting passed the character creation i was disgusted by what aeria was promoting. It is not a game i could play with kids around or even my girlfriend.
Originally posted by sicextheo It is not a game i could play with kids around...
This is a mature rated game. Would you watch a mature rated horror movie with kids around? No.
" or even my girlfriend. "
Yet there are plenty of girls who play this game.
This review is out of context of the intended audience of the game; people who aren't offended by semi nudity or the explicit nature of it. There are some people who wouldn't enjoy playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in which you can take a golf club and beat a stranger to a bloody mess on the ground, yet because this game had huge popularity it was deemed quite ok.
what i always wanted to know is why do boobs offend people so much?
Same here. We can have games that rip people open or chop off heads. Be able to run over pedestrians in GTA 1-V etc yet show a boob in a game and its wrong.
Your comments about its aesthetics lacks objectivity, a characteristic required for good journalism. Your moral views are irrelevant to aesthetics, probably shaped and nurtured by some corporate religion. This is a meta-ethical moral relativists world we live in by the way
First of all, this isn't Journalism, this is an opinion piece on a blog and the reviewer, unlike a journalist, can probably support him or herself. Secondly, this had nothing to do with morality. The author made no statement about the morals involved, he referred to it as lacking polish, being too focused on the computer generated nudity, and being degrading. Degrading and immoral are two different things. I find certain degrading activities fun (and many many people do) and perfectly moral. The OP didn't find this game immoral- he thinks its a pile of shit covered in boobies.

This is a much, much, much more appropriate and just review than what the original "reviewer" had. I hope with all this obvious backlash they find a more suitable reviewer who can handle the "shameful and degrading" act of reviewing this half-assed game. No offense intended to the author personally. I just think he did a very poor job.
I find it funny when the porn deprived 12 year olds that defend this game try to strawman everyone who thinks it sucks, by trying to say "you just are a prude" or "hypocrite you get offended by this but not gore!" etc. When some of us just know its a shitty game and are in no way offended. I can watch as much porn as the next guy and love it, but this game is bad, and the design/aesthetic is bad too. If I want porn I'll go to pornhub, not an MMO. Not to mention it just shows complete lack of confidence in your game when you have to make it porn to get people to play.
Just as I wouldn't want someone to hand me Mario Galaxy and say "heres your porn for the day", I don't want someone to hand me Back Door Fun 15 and say "check out this awesome MMO".
TL;DR: People can be un-offended and still find it distasteful and stupid. I love porn, but not in my games.
Interesting how you attack the game for it's "bots". If we were to jug games on this criteria then most new MMO's would be scored very poorly. I have played alot of the F2P MMO's over the last 5-6 years and find that the "bots" are the strongest part of the community for the first several moths of a games life and in some cases they continue to be a large part of the chat for years. Yet despite this you still chose to make this a main point. Has no one heard of "BLOCK" I use it in every game I play and it works very well at screening out the gold sellers.
As a side note, why is it people aren't complaining about the unrealistic and exaggerated features of the males in so many games? You know the ones, the guy wearing fur boots and a small loin cloth, with giant shoulders and so many muscles he couldn't stand upright without the help of steel cables for support. Then there's the pretty boy / elf, with the flawless skin and facial structure (if the graphics are good enough) that's supposed to appeal to those that like the other end of the physical development spectrum.
Am I complaining about the character visuals in modern games? No. I'm complaining about the whiners that think it's ok to have extreme diamorphism and skimpy or otherwise revealing clothing for one gender, while venomently denouncing it when it involves the other gender, because that is a form of sexism. You are using two different set of rules for males and females.
No, I still haven't logged into Scarlet Blade, but there does seem to be a strong negative bias among the mmorpg writers. Partly because of the wording and questionable phrasing of this review, and also because of a prior article of 'worst games' where Scarlet Blade had been declared horrible without even having been reviewed.
Oh, and by the way, The Venus D'Milo, Michaelangelo's David, the Sisteine Chapel, and a whole host of other creations have significant quantities of scantily clothed or even completely naked people, and are not classified as pornography.
Bad review. It's an average to below average theme park, but this review was fucking horrible and did nothing to actually review the game beyond the scope of "its bad".
Get another review by a competent writer that doesn't have a moral bias.
Might not be a great review, but its a pretty accurate one, the game is meant to appeal to a certain type of player, oddly enough if the 'maturity' thing was actually enforced, and only players 18+ could even log into the game, then the population of the game would probably fall drastically.
As for asking for the game to be reviewed again by someone without a 'moral bias' i can only assume they want it to be reviewed by someone with an 'immoral bias'
In the end it probably won't matter either way, as i doubt that the game will still exist by this time next year. I just hope that another game with even dodgier graphics doesnt replace it.

Another worthless review from a site that seems to be devolving weekly. Each review that comes out seems more rediculous than the last. I'm starting to lose all respect for this site.
kindly stop trying to teach unknowns over the internet how to act and behave
Someone a few posts back was talking about hypocrisy. here is a textbook example of what it is.
^ a textbook example of someone who outs their own self for what actually excites them in terms of sexual material and then he talks about hypocrisy, golden. Might wanna quote the whole phrase dude before making yourself look like, at best, a fail troll.
That said in my previous post I targeted no one but the subset of people who preach and preach, I was not trying to teach them just hoping they'd listen to reason and remove morality from their arguments so that the discussion wouldn't end in insults, bans and a locked thread. This goes for both sides (not so much on the "leave morality at home when doing a review" side as they left for the most part morality out of their arguments but some of them also lack logic).
Porn is what porn does... And form that standpoint it is not worse then any other example out there, in fact it is pretty tame compared to much of what is out there.
It is a male power fantasy wrapped around a game of sub-standard quality by western MMO standards. At least you have to give them a A for effort, they picked a design goal and by Bob they stuck to it.
It is porn, so judge it from that point of view. In my mind, as porn.. it sort of fails.
This MMO's toons are perverse so they are trying to put it on a worse MMO of the year list. Meanwhile MMO's like Neverwinter with their perverse P2W cash shop are on the list for the best MMO of the year.

Now you choose, which is really more perverse?
Well that is a good question, especially as they touch on two very different set of morals.
I'd still say that SB is worse... If nothing else because they are insulting to both sides of the population... One for thinking that all you need to sell a game is some flesh... And the other for reducing them to nothing but flesh.
NwN only wants your money, not unlike any other company out there.
