Geez, all those games, as a MMORPG purist/mono-gamist I normally only focus on one title at a time, and almost only in the MMORPG space.
Best to play what you know you will like, currently back playing an old school version of DAOC and EVE continues to draw me back from time to time for another go-around. (almost 4 years game time there)
Not bothering with most other titles, just not designed the way I prefer (FFXIV seems to be yet another) so I still am holding on for something more my style, perhaps CU or something....)

My point: In wow that game is so gear driven that its the only progression system. And you will never reach your potential because "the goal posts always move back".
And i thought it is the journey that counts?
If you are at the goal posts, you may as well declare the game finished and leave.
Originally posted by Raijukin have you tried DCuo? i still love the combat system the best over any other mmorpg
I actually agree with this. Though overall, DCUO is not one of my favorite games due to the typical kill/ fed ex quests. However they did get a great job with their paper/rock/scissors combat. Makes PVP a blast.
Though your milage may vary WoW has been adding more lateral activites aside from the normal gear grind. Other than standard gathering/crafting there is Archeology, pet battles and farming.
Granted, of you want a lot of side activities a game like EQ2 may be better for you. Blizzard is trying though which is nice. I'm personally a journey person so having those activities will keep me around longer.
After taking the weekend and playing in the FF14:ARR beta and having fun I decided yesterday to go through my installed games and update them and give each one another bit of playing time. Updated were:
Rift - Played 20mins
GW2 - Played 35mins
Neverwinter - Played 5-10mins
TSW - Didnt even get past character select before I went ugh.
Age of Wushu - Played 15mins before I was killed 3 times by the same guy
Age of Conan - Update took a while, played for an hour. I was having fun but it was empty.
Plantside 2 - played for 20mins, then got a headache
SWTOR - updated, didn't log in.
STO - made a new character was having fun and played up until the first away mission maybe 45mins
Aion - reinstalled, couldnt get my account info to log in....
Dragons Prophet - Logged in, forgot that I was on a EU server. Played for 5 - 10mins then uninstalled this one.
Entropia Universe - Uninstalled
Now as I sat wondering what the heck is going on and realizing that I wanted to get back into a fun mmo where people were and there were things to do, I resubbed to wow. Still after all that is said and done, as much of a love-hate relationship I have with the community in Azeroth, I keep going back. I need to play an mmorpg, its part of my lifestyle. I only wish something would pull me away from wow, because I've tried it all. Anyone else going through this?
Im pretty much in the same boat. As for Age of Conan, oddly enough i resubbed for a month, spent my offline leveling points on a high level Demo I had, got it to 80, and pugged 2 Raid wings, finding a 24 man raid group in under 10 min of logging in. I did not find it empty at all, we will see how it goes...
For the record, I totally got carried in my level 50 gear :P
GW2 - Well, sadly, what you get from GW2 at the start is the same thing you get the rest of the game. I don't think 35 minutes is enough to get a full taste of how well put together the world is, but in terms of abilities, it's very much the same throughout the leveling process. And yes, I have every weapon skill on every class unlocked. The gameplay does not change, I do think it was a mistake to just give people a handful of skills (not all of which are useful in mob to mob combat) and let them use those the entire time.
You know, it's funny... I see people that claim to have all the skills on all the professions and the first thought I always have is this... I'll bet they have no idea what the skills actually do.
Originally posted by HomituI'm sure you'll find plenty of people playing and loving all of those MMOs you listed. Myself, GW2 is easily on pace to one day overtake WoW as my longest played and most fun overall MMO.
Sadly I dont get the same sense of accomplishment in GW2 as I have in Wow.
You don't really accomplish anything in wow either. people you interact with are using you to acquire gear. Gear that will lose its value and reset every 3-6 months.
^ So you're saying that you don't accomplish anything in...every mmo.... that provides content updates...?
You accomplish entertainment, just like any other game. That *should* be the end result of any in game endeavors. If it's not entertaining, you're just wasting your time that could be better spent on something that IS entertaining or betters you in some way.
That's actually what i was eluding to in my post.. Dungeon running and raiding should be fun And should allow you to be social with other players.
But the emphasis on gear now is so great that players only see you as a means to an end and have no desire to be sociable or indulge in the entertainment aspect.
How do i know this as fact? Because systems like "the dungeon finder" and "the raid finder" are tools that remove the 'hard stuff' and optimize the time needed to acquire gear not social interaction.
If people were doing these activities for fun or social merits then there wouldn't be an issue to form your own groups through guilds or friends and keep trying content even if you cant knock it off in one lockout by exersizing teamwork.
LFD and LFR are fun for some people. Just developing their character is fun. I know I find it entertaining for a time. People that want a more social experience will probably join a guild (or find it outside of online games). Even if people in your guild are "using you for gear", they have to play nice in order to prevent the guild from falling apart.
Also, you may not be fully informed. The raid finder gear is of lower quality than the normal and heroic raid gear. Normal and heroic raids require the teamwork and organization of a guild. So yes, you can get a worse version for queuing for LFR and you get to experience the content (which is a good thing imo, more people get to see more of the content). However, if you want the "best of the best", you will need to work with a guild to get it.
I have exactly the same feelings about all those games. Right now I am thinking about going back to WOW again. It is the feeling you have playing this game that lets you come back always. No ther game can give you this feeling. And it is one of the ladt sub based games, which I prefer. I dont want to handle 4 different currencies in a "F2P" game anymore. F2P will die in some years, cause no community will be formed out of F2P games.
Burnt to the bones after playing almost every mmorpg released since 2004 (promise after promise, deception after deception) and not finding one that hooked me past the 1-3 month mark I returned to single player games after GW2 and TSW releases. So two months ago I saw an offer on a local store (I went there to buy pet's food, go figure) giving a free Cataclysm copy with a MoP purchase, so without thinking too much I bought MoP then I went to another shop and bought LK and BC from the trash bin (like 3€ both).
Looks like in those years without even logging on my WoW account it was hacked, used to sell gold and blocked. I sent Blizzard's support a mail explaining them what happened, writing my vanilla WoW box key, and in less than two hours I was in Azeroth again.
Same as OP. I have resubbed to WoW but because most of the people I played with are gone I have still be looking around for something new to try. I have also enjoyed Age of Conan to a certain extent. I also find it a bit empty and that`s what makes it hard to return. I have also just started with Dungeons and dragon online and I had the same feeling with that as well. It doesn`t help that I am mostly trying these games on my own with any family or friends but maybe someone on here can share with me/us what the current populations are for aoc and ddo.

There's your answer. Why not try this when it comes out. I thought it played so well it felt like if you took the art style abilities and stripped it from WoW and then threw Final fantasy style, story, abilities, and design on top of it. You would get FFXIV ARR.
I've ended up setting myself some long term pve goals in eve and vanguard purely for questing and exploring - the idea of comming across open dungeons in the middle of no-where is proving fun.
Re good old WOW the best thing I can compare it too is one of those awful buffets- it has a million different items on the menu, and you are forced to eat there every single night engorging yourself on plates full with a hundred different things that don't really sit well together and is a bit stale. If buffet restaurants gave achievments/rewards for eating food combinations it would be perfect.

Perhaps you should have never quit wow in the first place? Seems like the right game for you. If you enjoy it then keep on playing.
I haven't played wow for almost 3 years now, no desire to play it again either. I'm just stating this since people seem to think that they will always go back. Not necessarily, when you get tired of a game and stop playing you pretty much know at the time if you'll ever play it again. When you are done for good, you'll know.
Anyway for those other games, you didn't give any of them nearly enough time. But I suspect it was because you just wanted to play wow again, nothing wrong with that.

"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
I went back to Rift but the quests are atrocious, so uninstalled. I can't imagine reaching level cap and rolling a new toon. This is something I could do in WoW. In WoW I could reach cap and re-roll a new class without hesitation. Great quests/storylines, immersive world, fun classes, etc.
Played all classes to cap except the warrior, and not interested in the new monk class. Otherwise I would be playing.
Rift - Best feature soul system and public quests. Beyond that, WoW with better graphics.
GW2 - Fun game. Someone fun tradeskilling (although cooking is a blast). Dynamic events are fun. However, once you cap and finish your story, not much to do (for me)
Neverwinter - Played 5-10mins
TSW - Character customization is the best part, although while you can play anything, power unbalance was rampant when I played. Puzzles were the biggest saving grace for this game.
Age of Wushu - Wasn't overly interested in this game.
Age of Conan - Same as Wushu, wasn't interested.
Plantside 2 - Fun game in doses, still is, but certainly not an every day thing. Basically, I treat it like any shooter: play when I'm bored.
SWTOR - It's WoW, in space, with light sabers!
STO - I've thought about trying this one out, just haven't done so.
Aion - Combat and Graphics are the best parts, but that's it.
Dragons Prophet - Graphics are meh, story is blah, solely themepark. Best feature, dragon taming. The process of taming could be retooled. I don't really like trying to keep the cursor in the box. More tedious than challenging.
Entropia Universe - WTH is this...ie...never played it.
My biggest problem with most games is Themepark. I hate it. Some questing is fine, but not as the sole way to level. Especially when the quests have no real story. Of course, story alone isn't enough (hello GW2, TSW, and SWTOR). We need more than that!.
With that being said, I was impressed with FFXIV:AAR. Call me a fanboi or whatnot, but SE has done a bangup job fixing their crap game. Sure it is themepark-ish, but it is a fresh take (for me). Plus, I really really like their Job System.

If you are looking for truly open world then I think that WOW it is ...... every other game I have played no matter how slick or graphically pleasing (including Guild Wars 2) ... are still littered with horrible loading screens which always thwart that online world feel and they always cheat with travel.

Well similar happen with me, however there are more fun games then maybe 5 years ago when Wow was only really good game.
Currently playing and enjoying a lot Swtor (so far maxed out 7 alts, few are close, some are between 21 and 55). Best game ever. Actually have hard times to decide which is king for me, guess both, Swtor and Wow. From Swtor however (and for sure is not Wow to blame for this) I simply enjoy more lore. Watched all SW since first movie and loved all of them. Love using lightsabers, cannons, ... etc.
For the rest I find Gw2 very good game, currently 3rd on my list. For sure will try NW, TESO, FF14, ... would love to return to TSW, but simply i can not swallow down lack of active buttons. With only 7 in total (including buffing, healing, ...) gameplay in TSW pretty fast turn in total button masher. I love more complexity. Aoc, War, Rift, CO, STO, ... probably will not bother to return. Maybe at some later time. To many other good games and new one to try.
Exactly the same here, except that my list of games gets a bit longer. I tried dozens of different MMOs... I'm about to sub again (in this very moment). I hope Wildstar will break this endless circle because I'm getting sick of it. After all the fails I'm kinda sceptical, anyway. WoW doesn't suck, it has been more than 8 years playing the same game so I think its normal that so many people (including me) got really tired of the same stuff again and again. But playing a MMO has become part of my life, so I kept trying a long list that also has the titles you told about. I know people that also feel the same way, including my girlfriend and friends.
We are tired of promises of new epic-dynamic-perfect new MMOs that ends in nothing but more tired of getting back to Azeroth like some kind of never learning prodigal son.
PS: please excuse my crappy english
PS2: I know there is a lot of good MMOs out there, I just didnt find anyone that really suits me.
