Like some others have said, a Bard. Unfortunately, they will "tweak and improve" it until it is barely recognizable, I think.
If I recall correctly, I seem to remember reading an article or two about how the EQ Bard class was a fortunate mistake by 989/Verant/Sony.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
i would hope if it does have the same "classes" that the gameplay mechanics would be different. it would be great if each class had its own unique mechanics.. not just the same old whack a mole spells.
picking the boring choice, a warrior for me probably
it sort of depends what my friends pick too, if we play the game at all, they will probably want me to pick a warrior since that's what I play in EQ with them, it would make things easier
I never played EQ1 but I did spend a lot of time on EQ2 and am very excited about EQN. The world and the lore of EQ is exceptional.
Ranger because I love archery, there is such a finesse to it also very big on classes that can solo well. I love grouping but there are days when I just wanna do something to see if I can.
Shadowknight because what's not to love about the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse rolled into one badass.
Shadowknight was my most loved class from EQ2. Even though I played an assassin for most of my raiding my roommate at the time played a Brigand so we were on point for timing debuffs and bit hits.
I typically play a DPS type character, and my wife plays a support class.
We played a Necro and a Chanter mainly for EQ.
Ranger/Cleric for VG
Armsman/Cleric for DAoC (made scout later)
My Necro was my favorite 'class' in any mmo ever, was fun and versatile. My wife could keep control of a small army of mobs on her chanter and keep everthing timed in her head, was pretty amazing. I imagine it was her favorite class ever also.
Shaman hands down. I loved the old support shaman. Some decent healing but not primary. Some decent nukes but not wizzie/druid strength. Some of the best buffs. Some of the best dots. The best debuffs. A class that made groups 100X more efficient yet could carry their own weight offensively of supporty. I can't mention race yet since who the hell knows where that will go lol.
2nd in line would be a bard or shadowknight but both would without question be rolled.
Though.... I can never resist playing a Paladin since I always end up having one since EQ. One request, get pitchforks ready, is that they can dual wield. Shields are awesome but I like DW. Give me a Paladin that can DW and be offensive if there is already a tank and I'm good.
Oh... And bring stunning back to Paladins!! Biggest letdown of EQ2 was no heavenly stuns from above. It is the trademark!
Edit: Based upon the replies I've seen I have a vision. I find a highspot in The Commonlands and as the sun sets watch a pattern of infinite Bards running like Road Runners across the landscape. No problems in the support department.
Originally posted by sirphobos Personally I think I would play a Bard. Possibly my all time favorite class in any MMO I've ever played. Second choice would probably be a Shaman.
I kinda hope they have a system like Mabinogi has that allows player to make and play there own music using MML (Music Macro Language). Works by putting songs onto a music scroll in game and equiping them and plays them with the instrument u have equiped aswell.
It really depends upon just how much teleportation is needed and how they handled the class roles. If the classes were pretty much the same as they were and they kept PoK levels of teleportation and not old world levels then I would probably play something like my EQ1 character from Kunark (yes I re-rolled for Kunark because I wanted an Iksar) -- an Iksar Shaman.
If NOT then I might go with a druid to have ports (my original original character was a elf druid).
Oops posted, but ya, those two classes I have pretty much played exclusively (and damn well I might add ) for 20 years of mmorpg's, i love the cleric class, and mage, well it's a perfect counterbalance.

Plus quad kiting giants for plat was great amusement .
Assuming they have similar roles.
Iksar Shaman and Wood Elf Ranger

I can't imagine EQN having traditional classes, not after all the sandbox hype.
Do we want it to? I don't know, myself...
I don't think I would care either way, but i'm just not expecting it.
Looking at todays habits..
Im sure a bunch of people would go Ranger, because the whole bow thing is just so cool,so Legolas cool.
Until they find out the class is absolutely weak. Then they'd probably all clamor for bard once they realize it is arguably the most fun class to play.
As for me,I'd play whatever class is played least.Becuase being different as much as possible,to me,is above all else priority wise.

The answer is simple, the Bard!
Fastet thing in the game,
Able to solo if wanted
Wanted by parties
Mana/HP regen
Resistance!
And your armor was multi-colored
xD

As long as its EQ1 and not EQ2 style then:
Riho- SWG Scylla
Riho- EQ2 Guk
Rihan- WoW Dunemaul
Freeloader- WoW Cenarius
Freestyle- WoW Cenarius
I'm also thinking Bard...

I'de prolly be a tank, been a caster to long, wanna be up front and center, and protect my group in a new way.
Ide prolly wanna be a bard to, loved it in ffxi, maybe its the same in eq next

Yeah but we are talking EQ classes, did you play a bard in EQ?
Anyway, bring back song twisting, yeah some would say /melody is better but i like the old style.
