Apparently I never heard of this game until today, and it looks really cool. But I've not seen anyone yet in the game or maybe the area i'm with is for low level characters, so I'm curious...are there only few players left in the server?

me, but not as much as a play it before
It's pretty dead. I played since Closed Beta but haven't played actively in over a year. Log in from time to time for an FoC match if queues are running but frequently I can wait and wait for a queue to pop and it won't (only takes 4 players in queue to open a battleground now too).
As a fully ripened pay 2 win MMO the population is even more stacked with cash shop whores than it was and that forces anyone wanting to play competitively to compete by prying open their wallet for myriad microtransactions in the forge.
Also, the game has elves. That's a big drawback.
