Would you play an ARPG in third person with WASD movement?

As the title says, would you play an action oriented, persistent world, non instanced, ARPG style of game with WASD movement in the same vein as Diablo or Path of Exiles?

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

That is pretty much how I viewed Neverwinter.  Played it for a bit, quit when they had all of the AH problems.  It wasn't a bad game if you treat it as a 3rd person Diablo clone.  I just got sucked into other games when I took a break due to the AH issues.

Yes I would play isometric with WASD movement.

No Diablo style games suck.  I used to like the original Diablo before I discovered EQ.  The second I discovered MMO's I tossed Diablo and Diablo 2 aside for good.  I tried Torchlight in the last couple years and confirmed my distaste for the shallow brainless games they are.  Thank god I didn't throw money out the window for D3.

WASD would be a very minor improvement that wouldn't change the core mechanics of these shallow games.  I suppose Neverwinter is a hybrid ARPG/MMO that has WASD movement...there ya go.

if the ARPG game in question is good i would definitely play it with WASD. Thats the only reason i stopped playing Torchlight 2 and Path of Exile right at the beginning, never bought any Diablo ever, and wont even bother with marvel heroes. I see the lack of a WASD option in PC games as pure lazyness. I think point and click works for well on RTS but everything else should have WASD as an option (at least for me to even think of trying the game)

  • Yes. I enjoy ARPGs with isometric view and have always wished that they had WASD movement. I hate click to move. Click to move is what has kept me from playing Lineage 2

same here. I installed that game 3 times years ago trying to get past the lack of WASD and i just cant tolerate it. Deleted it every time and have never looked back again.

Is there some reason these type of games don't have WASD movement?   Or is it just tradition going back to Diablo?

Diablo was FAR from the first game of this style. If it's solely due to tradition, that tradition is not of Diablo origin.

    Sure.

Like any good PVE MMORPG you need three things:

    • Responsive controls.
    • Good ability design.  Few (if any) redundant abilities.  Dynamic abilities like League of Legends where the precise timing and/or aim of an ability has a profound impact on its effectiveness.  And also other factors like environment (a Blitzcrank grab over open land is pretty nice, but dragging someone across a wall puts them much further out of position.)
    • Good monster design.  Like Diablo 3 where each type of monster has 1-2 unique traits (some leap, some use dumbfire projectiles, some have avoidable big crushing blows.)

Probably. I prefer WASD over PnC.

Though I did enjoy my time in Diablo I & II, point and click movement sucks for me overall. The reason I could not get into Marvel Heroes was lack of character controls and stuck in one camera angle.

I play Skyrim 80% in 3rd person view, switching to first person view only for ranged combat so I could aim better or for fine manipulation of objects.

Yes, I would play an ARPG in 3rd person view with WASD movement. I prefer 3rd person viewing over 1st person.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    No.

If it is a ARPG, i want to fight my own mobs, and not share with others.

I would play an instanced, lobby based ARPG style of game with WASD movement ... something like NWO.

Shallow and brainless? Oh, you mean like the weeks upon weeks of mindless grinding in EQ? The days and days spent rooted a single spot, waiting for a rare spawn? That kind of shallow and brainless?

Anyway, to answer the topic at hand:  I certainly would. In fact, I actually have. Hellgate: London was / is played with that exact control scheme, and it worked beautifully, despite the game failing due to other issues & idiotic business decisions made by that jackass Bill Roper (and other execs).

It's a sad day indeed when a family is too afraid of reprisals to publicly thank somebody for saving their lives.

Yes. I used a mod for Torchlight 1 that gave me a similar experience. Heck, I'd be happy with just being able to use a gamepad, where one determines direction, and the other determines the camera angle.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I can't stand isometric views. So archaic to have a set view...

Point and Click is a deal breaker for me. I don't care how awesome the rest of the game is, if it is Isometric view only, you completely lost me. I can't stand not being able to change camera angle.

I played WoW up until WotLK, played RoM for 2 years and now Rift.
I am F2P player. I support games when I feel they deserve my money and I want the items enough.
I don't troll, and I don't take kindly to trolls.

Those things would not be the determining factors.. so it depends on the rest of the game.

Edit: if by third person you mean isometric (not the same thing ... ) yes, I would be interested.

I will not play ANY game that is only WASD,it has always been extremely uncomfortable for me.If a game can't at least have key mapping,it is a game not worth even looking at.
