I'm a little curious about this question. Of course the results will only reflect the views of the members here and not the general public, but still...
I actually like a mix of both, especially the way it has been done in GW2, where Fantasy is still the prodominant theme, but its obvious that over 250 years from GW1's era has let society make new advancements in Technology.
The Mix of Charr Mechanization and Asuran Magical Contraptions makes it feel really diverse and how you might expect two different nations to advance differently.
Charr are highly Weaponized / Militaristic, while Asura are highly Experimental / Practical.

We should clarify 'steam punk'.
Everyone can imagine high fantasy: Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.
Whenever I see the word 'steampunk' thrown around, it only refers to people dressed in Victorian garb with gears and clocks attached in impractical ways.
I can't stand what's referred to when it's used narrowly like that. Definitely prefer high-fantasy over that.
If we're just talking about fantasy with some (slightly more realistic) steam technology, that's fine - really depends on the game. Final fantasy games usually handle this well; GW2 did as well.
Fantasy is great and will always be irreplaceable. However, after a decade of playing various game types of high fantasy I need some break from it. Especially because so many games with high fantasy world were complete crap...
I need something fresh, so I'm way more hyped about any other type of world setting right now. Be it Sci-Fi, "Steampunk" or any other mixture of both...
Let's give high fantasy some break, I'm sick of it.
guess u mean somthing like classic fantasy. answer is: i love ff7 it IS the best rpg so far but i preffer swords more than mashinguns, so the normal fantasy genre is better
I like most themes, but grew bored with the way MMO's use the high fantasy theme. (I detest the holier-then-thou and I-am-so-perfect high elves as depicted in most MMO's and the kind of MMO players it sometimes attracts with their ll's, yy's, ffs) So I went with steampunk. Still, I would prefer post apocalypse and sci-fi over steampunk. But having to chose between high fantasy and steampunk, please no high fantasy.
I am not interested at all in a zombie theme in a MMO. That would become boring very fast for me.
I like both; I grew up in the gaming world playing fantasy games and later discovered steam-punk which I like it more, but I do not dislike the other
If there would be a steam-punk game done right I would probably invest my time in it, but I doubt that nowadays there is a company out there that would invest in a game just for creating something good and innovative with a moderate payout.
I like both settings, as long as they are well done. A good example (imo) of how steampunk should be done is the single player RPG Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, hopefully the upcoming Shadowrun Returns will also be a good play.
Between the two I had to go for High Fantasy. This is mainly because modern technology is boringly efficient, and the idea of attaching the stuff to High Fantasy characters, which is the most frequent use of steampunk, is incredibly annoying to me. Dwarves with hand grenades, personal blimps, Divinchian inventions all substituted for swords and spells just comes off as .......I don't know, gimmicky? Not that High Fantasy is not gimmicky on it's own, but at least it is a complete creation and not a mishmash of other things.
Now if someone were to define the Steampunk genre as only having to do with characters from real life 19th century, like the Wild, Wild, West used to be, then I would be all for that because it would be the complete form of the genre.
The genre is not secure to this though, and so High Fantasy gets my vote.
I don't think we have any real, high-profile steampunk MMOs around. Some games have wacky technology, but it's usually not real steampunk. For example, people tend to say Charr are steampunk in GW2, but they don't fulfill any criteria of steampunk (steam powered machines, retro looks, anachronism) other than having big machines. Big machines don't make a game steampunk.
The aforementioned Arcanum is actually the only video game that comes to mind as good steampunk. It's also high fantasy, so...
Originally posted by MMOExposed Not sure which to vote for. Need some clearing up. Is Rift,WoW,GW2 considered Steampunk or High Fantasy in this poll?
I would consider all three of those pure High Fantasy. Rift's Defiant faction is more Cyberpunk with the time traveling and the use of electricity over steam. WoW does have some Steampunk elements, though as I pointed out in my first post it's taken to a ridiculous level and is far from being the focus of the game.
True story, the first time I ever tried out wow and found out that there was a guy with a rifle in the game, that was it. I lost my buzz. It had been all I could do to stomach the clockworks in EQ all those years. I think there is a little steampunk usage in all high fantasy. Even the Clash of the Titans had that little owl in it. I've hated it all though, every single bit, except for James GD West (The original, or fresh prince version, IDC)

But Warcraft RTS, as well as Warhammer IP, both which predates WoW, had those same elements.
I realize there is a niche for steampunk, but I hate that shit. Maybe it's because I'm a 20 year IT Pro and love all things electronic. The only analog systems I love are VINYL RECORDS!!
Seriously though, there is nothing about the entire concept of steampunk that speaks to me. Not even a little.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Why can't I ever seem to make a post without a misspelling (spell check doesn't work in the poll text entry boxes). Sigh, sorry. I do see it now.

I tend to prefer my magic to be clearly labled as magic, but give me a good well-thought-out world and I'm usually happy.

+1
I only picked steampunk because it's time for something new besides more elves, dwarfs, orcs, etc.

Neither, really - I prefer low fantasy.
A well-crafted, immersive, coherent ,self-consistent world that doesn't rely on too many cliches is probably more important to me, however.
E.g. I liked Dishonored's world (both the low magic and the steampunk), but didn't like Rift's take on things
Im with you guys.
Looking forward to new CDProject steampunk game in development.
