Will UO drop monthly fees or will it drop the game?

gargantroogargantroo Member Posts: 1,477

When Ultima Online eventually comes to an end, which do you think will happen? EA cancelled Earth and Beyond, but that game probably wouldnt hold an audience if it was free. Which makes me think, will UO become free and drop c2p or will it just close down first?

Oh, and free servers will always be around I know this. I am talking about the official EA servers.

UO has been hovering at about 250,000 subscribers for a  long time now. THere has been no evidence to show that this will drop any time soon. I wouldn't count on EA letting people play or free.

No, this game is going to be around for a long long time. But then you ask yourself...how much slaughter can this title take?

    /played-mmorpgs

Total time played: 9125 Days, 21 Hours, 29 Minutes, 27 Seconds
Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds

I just recently heard from a friend that EA is putting resources into creating another UO2 project that will rewrite the current incarnation of UO into a fully 3d client. Time shall tell.

And im the secret lover to the easter bunnie...

If one more person mentions something that their immaginary friend that works at EA games
said .. ill seriosuly injure something..

EA wont do anything big to UO face it.. they will just milk as much cash as they can out of
the current player base before they let the game die. you dont belive me? lets see..

    MILK titles released (and items)

Ultima Online 7th ani - pay 20 bucks and get itamz! once in a life time oppertunity!
-2 weeks later , We are now selling 7th ani items for 1 dollar a piece get them now!-

Evil furinture - same idea but no box

Samurai Empire Soul stone Hoax! Once in a life time item again!

UO:ML kills another part of UO and this time they give newbies a 4th year vet rewards for pre ordering
    YAY!

Ultima Online 8th Age - GET YOUR NEW -BLUE- SOUL STONE HERE! and oh MORE PIXEL CRACK!

Seriosuly the person at EA's legal dept should get a raise for the nice soulstone idea..
Change its name to "Blue soulstone" and the "once in a life time deal for UO:SE" dosnt apply anymore

.. so the basic fact is .. EA games does not care about their players they care about your money
and will do anything (expect accutally pleasing their costummers or spending acctual money on UO)
to get it ! the damn lead dev is from the sims online for f's sake..SIMS?!

And the fact that 90% of the old dev time left in under a week (around 1 - 2 days space between each
dev leaving) a few weeks after UO:SE was released does not bring up a warning flag to you people
    dosnt it?

..there..now please try dreaming about your 3d eniges and pre uo:r shards..
I WONT HAPPEN (well mabye a pre uo:R shard)

MMORPG.COM: There have been two sequels to Ultima Online that have been canceled in production over the past few years. Will players ever see an Ultima Online 2 (for lack of a better name)?
    LeCraft:

We've already begun work on the next major product for UO. You could say that Samurai Empire was just a warm up for the new team (we just moved from Texas to EA's headquarters in California.) This is one of the finest teams I've had the pleasure of working with during my four and a half years on UO - I'm already looking forward to what I know we'll accomplish.

    Again, time shall tell.

This was written back when Samurai Empires was released, apparently.

Well since there is TWO (mr tact and Evilmantis) Left from the old dev team ;) the rest of the dev
team left when UO:SE was released so your engie isnt going to happen anytime soon.

    i mean just look
at the art from the new so called artist "Grimomen" or something.. a demented 2 year old is better
    then him

Lady lu - No brain bimbo galore.. she has NO clue what so ever about UO and is supposed to lead the
    dev team? gahahhahhahaha

Mr Tact - Our ONE hope for the future ! :)

Random dev that was cheap enough to hire 4-8 - who cares?

And these people are goin to bring us new gfx? yeaa right ::::31::

EA will close the servers and probably not even sell the license, as they might keep it for future assets.
though I really think the Ultima trademark is forgotten by most gamers these days anyway and not worth anything.

luckly UO will never die thanks to the great player run servers ;)

UO is actually around 150,000 accounts. I'm going to guess most people have 2 accounts, if not more. I'll go out on a limb and say 75-95,000 real players. Still a ton in my opinion. UO (Pre-tram) will always be my first love in an MMORPG, and I know i'll never find another one like it :P

The recent survey was rather promising. It seems they are considering some of the other avenues that they have either left by the wayside or had not felt were viable before. Questions regarding ownership, sea/ship combat and activities, and even a few questions about a pre-UO:R design.

UO's holding rather steady in 100,000's at least right now, and they have yet to close down a server... more than can be said for most of the new releases. I don't think UO will be going away any time soon.

The number of actual UO players is much higher than what the subscription numbers would indicate, as there are hundreds of emulated servers out there with player bases ranging from a few dozen to a thousand or so.

Yes and half of them plays in japan, so you are with about 50.000 players that can understand you language.

50.000 players on a western game is not so much anymore though....

Well, something under wraps is being worked on (third times a charm hopefully):

Grimm: Thanks in advance to all the nice posts. I've got a great team (quite literally an army of two) working on these and other changes that I think you'll really like. The gentleman that did the work on the female items is also responsible for the fantastic holiday items you'll be seeing around shortly. For now, we'll just call him DB. The other gent has been working on a MASSIVE understaking that I can't talk about now, but rest assured you folks will go nuts over. I'll refer to him as SE. These two have been putting in a lot of time and effort into these tasks and I think they deserve the recognition because without them none of this would be possible.

I hope you don't think those 3 people will do a complete graphics overhaul with UO.
I guess they will try to fix the most common crappy graphics and hopefully introduce something new.

As for a new client that was the 3rd try 6 months ago (the secret never to happen project) or so and after it failed more than half of the developers left EA and the new ones are "broken" in now.

Ah, actually its probably the 5th try (although you are probably right about it not being anything massive - his team seems small):  U02 cancelled, 3rd Dawn (3D failure), UOX cancelled, then the 'secret project' withdrawal.
