Doesn't seem like you can claim WoW is just a clone of EQ1 and then call everything else a WoW clone. If someone clones me and then names that clone Barney, and then clones Barney. Aren't they still a Fendel clone? Or is it like multiplicity rules where cloning a clone messes it up some.

No one with any common sense can honestly call WOW an EQ clone, there just are not enough similarities.
Though it is true, EQ1 is one of the early forefathers of today's current standard theme park games.

WoW deviated from EQ about as much as GW2 deviated from WoW. there's a few similarities, but way more differences. You literally cannot strip off 4-5 non-core features of WoW and say "look it's EQ". All the bells and whistles that MMO's have touted from 2006-2013...go ahead take WAR, SWTOR, RIFT, TERA, WILDSTAR, TSW apart. take out the buzzwords and even the combat if you want. the core game design as far as leveling and content delivery and structure is completely identcal to the one served up in WoW...they do not overlap with everquest, asheron's call, daoc, etc. which came before WoW though.
EQ is a progenitor of the current thempark MMO, but no game has cloned EQ to date.
Who ever said WoW was an EQ clone? they are two completely different games. Get your facts straight, OP.
The problem with gaming society today is that they decided to mimic WoW in just about every game, offering very little when it comes to new ideas. I have yet to see an EQ clone, as it is very hard to clone mmo perfection (early EQ being closest to mmo perfection one can experience)
most people on every mmo forum this topic is actually a response to a very recent post calling Wow a clone of EQ in another topic because someone said that the topical game was a clone of WoW.
yea we get it, SOE shipped the game before the map/compass were functional so it was a sandbox....
wrong, as no current thempark mmo resembles EQ in any non-superficial way, while most of them resemble WoW down to the marrow.
I guess people are so desperate to label anything sandbox these days that even one or two features are good enough. Let me guess only because EQ didn't have linear quest based gameplay and directions / compass it is sandbox..right?

I wish WoW was an EQ clone. I wish there was an EQ clone.
I'm guessing OP never played EQ.
Edit: EQ isn't a themepark or sandbox it's old school. Quite a few games in that category.
They are EQ clones. Its just that WoW clone is a subgenre of EQ clone.
They are WoW Clones, aka a type of EQ clone.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
I love EQ1 as much as the next guy and I have to agree. WoW is NOT and EQ clone. However, EQ2 and WoW came out on the same day and felt like the same game to me in the beginning. So there is that...
people call other games WoW clones not only because its similar to WoW, its also because they want to have all the moneys WoW make (that EQ didnt). Thats why nobody says, its a EQ clone!.
I think debating the lineage of games is an exercise in futility. Ideas are rarely 100% original in any facet of life. Ideas & progress are always more evolutionary.
Think of your favorite musical act. You don't like them because they invented a secret chord that somehow has never been played. It's the combination of your personal taste that you see in their music. They borrow & rearrange, a bit of a tweak here & there, a re-skinned appearance.
It's the same with games. Underground indie cred, purists, elitists, hipsters, it's all right here in your favorite hobby.
P.S. Led Zeppelin sucks.
Exactly this. A game company doesn't sit around the planning table and say "Let's try to model our new product after EQ". Said game company doesn't give two craps who invented what game sub-system or feature. All they want to do is make a boatload of money. Blizzard has shown how it's possible to do just that. So others are trying to follow in their steps.
Agreed. People just use "WOW" instead of "EQ" because the target audience will be more familiar with the former. It's not a matter of which cam first but a matter of what way to best relay the information to one's listener/reader.

This has been covered time and again on a regular basis, so it's rather hard to believe the OP doesn't have some other agenda for this thread.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

WOW is an EQ clone.
I'll quote my statement from a previous thread:
I know you don't accept that and, if you only compare the level-based class-restricted gear-dependent raid endgame fantasy MMOs with each other, WOW and EQ look very different. I leave it up to you to figure out the flaw in that process.

Uhm... seriously?
Even the people who worked on it at Blizzard can tell you they took a lot of their inspiration from Everquest. WoW was, quite literally, an EQ streamlined to be more accessible to their playerbase. It is modified, but it's still very much based off EQ design. You can even look at what SOE did w/ EQ2 and compare that to WoW and see the similarities (even though EQ2 came out before WoW).
Please show me one of these so called "WoW Clones". In the 9 years that have passed since World of Warcraft launched I see alot of people claim games are "WoW Clones" but no actual game that has more similarities than differences. Is WoW a benchmark that other MMO Developers use to create their games? Yes. Does this make them a "WoW Clone"? No. I am sick and tired of people digging through a game with a preconceived notion that the game they are looking at is a "WoW Clone". Of course a developer is going to say that they hope their game can beat WoW, its the big dog of the school yard. Just like Asheron's Call, EverQuest, and Ultima Online was the big dogs of the school yard before WoW launched. Do yourselves a favor quit looking for the mythical "WoW Clone" and start looking at the games and judge them by their own merit.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

It always comes from people who never played the game, always. I ignore those people right away.
EQ has didly squat to do with a themepark.
I love this stupid argument. People that either love WoW or have no idea about software development can't accept the fact that WoW is a clone of EQ only dumbed down so he masses can partake. The irony of how these same people will claim that all games since WoWs release are WoW clones is oh so funny. To start with, WoW was not the first game to be released with quest hubs, dumbed down content, gear grinds, and a deign that ferries the players to the next hub the year it was released, EQ2 was. Second, a UI, quests, raids, lore, gear grinds, and anything else these people claim is being cloned from WoW came from other games, chiefly EQ so to say that WoW is not a clone of EQ but while claiming any new MMO is a WoW clone just shows how blinde and/or ignorant these people truly are.
WoW is a clone that had zero original ideas save one... Dumbed down content. So there was 1 original idea, oh wait! EQ2 was released first with that in mind so oops, nothing in WoW is original.
Go look at Rune of Magic and Forsaken World.
